Gas mileage

I've read a lot of the reviews and it seems you either love em or hate em. This is my 2nd X and I love it. Gas mileage? Who buys an SUV for gas mileage? I drive 140 miles round trip 4 days a week to work and play off road on the weekends. I will drive it till the wheels fall off. Then I'll fix it and drive it some more. Got rattles, use your imagination and fix em yourself. Me, never had any I couldn't make go away. If you bought it to be a car, you bought the wrong vehicle. It does handle nice on the highway, but is at it's best offroad. With the high clearance, offroading isn't a problem. With the V6 and auto I've hauled a 5000 lb RV over 300 miles several times. Not a problem. I've owned a lot of trucks and SUV's and can honestly say, my X does what the manufactur said it would do. Everything you need, and nothing else. It is what it is, and good at it, it is. I LOVE MY X!

Strength:

Silent ride, good engine, excellent for towing, clever stowage

Weakness:

There is no locking gascap! Nor did the dealer stock one!

It's easy to get along with in the city, a few blind spots but overall OK, and it is quite good on trails and bad road. Truly a Universal utility vehicle.

Look, off-raod capability, roof rack, transmission, suspension.

Weakness:

Gas mileage but its the same as any other suv and its thousands cheaper than a toyota.

This car is so sweet. Its high up so you don't have to put a lift kit on it. it has a sweet roof rack. its drives very smooth. I got a stick so the automatic woudl probably be semi underpowered. I mean you honestley don't need all that horsepower. Yeah the gas mile age with 50/50 city highway driving is 14/15 adn higher all highway. But its an suv, thats honestley normal. Some say that the 4runner gets better mileage but a 2002 4 runner is still over 17000 for the same model. You lose maybe a mile or two per gallon but your still ahead thousands. Also xterras look way sweeter than 4 runners, because for some reason no one has them. If you have the choice get the stick because you won't lose any torque. Its the sickest car out there.

Strength:

Simple controls, very quick, fun, easy to climb up and strap things on roof rack. Was considering Hummer H1 or H3 "X" was more practical

Weakness:

Traction control will not allow to do spinouts/doughnuts, crappy 12-13 mpg for a Jap car, Stupid tire inflation idiot light.

Plasticky yes, rattles no. Fun yes, quick yes, bad gas miliage yes, simple yes, good ground clearence yes, good rear visability yes good heat/AC yes. When I was young and poor I had Nissan Pathfinder 2 dr. it ran forever. After years of driving Fords Trucks I switched back to Nissan. I miss the big truck, the way it drove and the better gas miliage. It was not as much fun to drive as the nimble Xterra......I am an old man and I like it! OH, Paid extra for custom leather seats with butt warmers.

too much plastic, too many rattles, small opening to get out of back seat, very loud

I would dicourage anyone from buying an Xterra!! I completely agree with sadgirl's review. Everything on the vehicle rattles!!! In the last year it has been in service at least 10 to 15 times for the same two rattles. They say there is nothing else to do it will only get worse. If you drove the vehicle like the commerical shows it would fall apart. Nissan is aware of the issues and are suppose to send a technican out to look at it. But this will be the second time they have came out. When will they actually step in and do something about the issues they are having with the xterra? Do not waste your money on this plastic box of rattles!!

Body Noises
Creeks, rattles, makes all kinds of noises. The window sounds like its ready to drop. The back hatch will not stay up and the cover keeps falling off.

I bought a Nissan because I heard nothing but good things. I was WRONG. The xterra we bought has done nothing but made nosies, rattles, all over. This is crazy because we bought it new. They have had it in the shop over 6 times for the dame reason. They cannot do anything to correct the problems. I will never buy another one.

The Nissan Xterra is my first SUV and I love it! I had it for one year and I can't get enough of it! A friend of mine bought a Ford Escape and had nothing but problems with it but that's Ford anyway. I have the two wheel drive but I have taken it off road several times and even competed with a Toyota 4 Runner with four wheel drive! My Xterra handles great - beats out a Lexus SUV! Typical gas milegae for an SUV but I do ride my bike to work so that compensates for that. I would recommend this SUV to anyone. It was named SVU Of The Year in Motor Trend!

Strength:

Great Power, Good Towing Ability, Comfortable Ride, Good Clearance, Best Looking SUV out there, Great Price at $26,000, Tons of Mods make it easy to personalize.

Weakness:

Head rest can get bothersome on long rides. Stock Tires need to go to an AT or something a little more aggresive.

After Reading some other reveiws, I was a little leary of the Xterra. It seemed like you really like it, or you really hate it. I for one REALLY REALLY LIKE IT. I've seen others complain about the gas milage they were getting, but it was alway the older versions. I planned on getting 15 to 17 in city- 19 to 21 on highway. To date: 17.7 city and 22.3 highway for a 4X4 SUV- :} I love the added attention to detal that Nissan designer took into account. Compared to the older models- the interior is more functioning and alot better looking. I love the ground clearence, the smooth car like ride and the awsome power of the little V6. Every time I step inside of it, I want to be heading to the hills. Truth be told about this vehicle, it's price and options make it well worth the money. Other vehicles in this catagory will cost you 5,000 to even 10,000 more( and not even as good of vehicle) I would recommend an Xterra for any buyer who is looking for a good multi purpose SUV. You can go Wal-Mart down the road, drop the kids at school or trek the Grand National Stair Case and MOAB as we do with ours. WE LOVE THIS VEHICLE- WILL BE BUYING ANOTHER ONE SOON!!!

powerful V6 , handles well.

Weakness:

hard on fuel, poor visibility, inferrior quality of instrumentation pannel.

Looks great, handles well, guzzles fuel. The deception is that the vehicle sticker and Nissan rates 19 mpg city /27 hiway. Traded in a 99 Pathfinder that was getting 20/24 so this seemed like a decent trade. Not even close to getting these estimate and actually get 15 cty/ 19 hiway. I don't know how car companies are able to get away with false advertising like this and from reading some other reviews, we (consumers) pay for the next 100,000 miles for their misacalculations after we drive off the lot? How do car manufactureres come up with mileage numbers.. wind tunnels and ball bearings? Xterra are much harder on fuel than advertised, bottom line.
