Model Reviewed: Oldmobile Bravada

Strength:

Reasonable size. Looks good when it runs.

Weakness:

Probably the worst constructed vehicle that I have ever owned and I have owned a few. Usually had good luck with GM cars but this Oldsmobile is absolutely unreliable. Too much plastic, frequent electric problems. plenty of aircondition problems. Had to replace aircompressor, drier, and several valves and fittings. Had to replace practically the entire front end suspension including the power steering box ( very pricey.) Front driver,s side door rubs on body, the hinges are very cheaply made and not adjustable. Body trimming inside and out is terribly cheap with integrity in construction lacking almost entirely. Uses too much gas for the power output. Offroad characteristics are there only in the Designer,s mind. Poor towing vehicle , its too light and too short. Not a strong truck. Only made to look good to the eye. Way overprized for what one gets. Leather interior and floor rugs cheap quality.Handles falling off on doors . Entire inside front panel literally falling off.Windshield washer pumps already replaced - two of them and many more problems and all this on a vehicle with just over 60,000 miles and good care.

I would not recommend the 1997 Oldsmobile Bravada to anyone. Its the worst General Motors Vehicle that I ever owned. Has constant breakdowns, Integrity of construction very bad. Quality -mostly cheap plastic throughout the entire vehicle. Lots of electric problems. Leaks front drivers door when going through carwashes, lots of windnoise too. Inside door panel on driver,s door is literally falling off. Car looks good but is just pretty looking plastic junk . Very poor quality control during construction. Handling is so- so, gas consumption not good. (average about 13-15 miles per gallon. not good for towing. Aircondition problems, and plenty of mechanical problems.I would not recommend this SUV to anyone.

Strength:

Nice car inside and out

Weakness:

Not made for the long haul. But what do you expect now days.

Bought the car with 2,000 miles. Looked nice and couldn't beat the price. Car needs additional power. Trouble accellerating going up hill and anytime the A/C is on. Not good for towing. Drivers side door never closed correctly. Hinges are welded and can not be adjusted. Just bend the door frame or live with the air flow. At 32,000 miles had cam shaft bearing replaced. At 83,000 miles the car has had many problems. Replaced fuel pump ($600.00) replaced four (4) oxygen sensors ($800.00), windshield wiper motor computer chip ($120.00), Injector head ($150.00), rear windshield wiper motor ($300.00) Was a good car. Not made for the long haul. Buy the extended warrenty and sell it once its over.

Strength:

Good looks. Runs good on straigt hillless roads.

Weakness:

Poor pickup on hills. Hop when backing up and turning. Hump in front passenger floor. Window tint is too dark.

I purchased the vehicle used with appx 14k miles. It came fully loaded and looks great. However, started experiencing a sort of hopping from front end when backing up and turning at same time feels like the car is going to stall. The dealer tells me this is normal for an awd. I am going to take it to regular mechanic and have them check the ball joints which I have read go out on Bravadas pretty often. Car has no get up and go on hills. The price seemed right but now I wonder if they saw me comming.

Strength:

Horsepower, Towing Capacity, Interior Quiet ride, Floating ride due to great suspension, Stereo, Controls at your fingertips for climate radio just about everything. Automatic 4 X 4 works great. Good braking!

Weakness:

Visibilty backing up, Mirrors don't seem to return to normal positions after tilting upon backup.

Replace a 98 Blazer Lt with this vehicle. Best riding vehicle I have driven. Puts Tahoe and Trail Blazers to shame. Gas mileage is OK considering the extra approx 100 HP over the Blazer. Much better at trailering my boat also which was a real chore for the Blazer. All the bells and whistles. Bose sounds system is spectacular even with the sunroof open. Plenty of space, easy in and out and loading. In 9 months I've put 36,000 miles on vehicle and repair expenses have been $ 0. GM should learn from this one...best product they currently have.

Strength:

Beautiful ride; looks great, easy to drive (when it works).

Weakness:

After we had it 8 months, began having problems. On a cold start, engine would race (intermittent problem), then could not get any acceleration (would only go 5-10mph) until we went half a mile or more. We've had it to the dealer three times for this problem--first time (at 3791 miles) dealer replaced gear box which did not fix the problem; second time April 2002 (at 7660 miles) dealer replaced the transmission. May 2002 (7800 miles) I refused to bring it to dealer and told him to pick it up, which he did. Dealer placed a "box" on vehicle and had one of their techs drive it, problem occurred but "box" recorded nothing. When picking the vehicle up 11 days later, dealer told us nothing was done since he said Oldsmobile told him this was "normal" No repairs were made this third time. Before picking up vehicle we called Oldsmobile and were told they are aware of the problem and are working on a "fix" which could take "two weeks, two months, or two whatever" to find a fix. When we picked up vehicle, dealer again said this is "normal". When reporting the third incident of the same problem, dealer's service manager said we should floor the accelerator when we couldn't get any speed (vehic

We've had this vehicle for 14 months, now have only 8800 miles on it. For the price paid, we've had the same problem 3 times with this vehicle (see Weaknesses below) which neither the dealer nor Oldsmobile know how to repair. In the 14 months we’ve owned the vehicle, we have been without it 62 days.

Strength:

Has alot of passenger and cargo room.Nice interior. Very good on snow and ice. All the new options are nice

Weakness:

Seats aren,t as comfortable for a short person as in the 1991 and 1996 models. Now feels like driving a bigger suv.

I love this vehicle! This is the 3rd Bravada I have owned. I have had a 1991 and a 1996. Here in the midwest there is nothing else like it on snow or ice. I have previously owned a GMC Jimmy and the Bravada has a much nicer ride and is better on ice.

Strength:

Nice looking and rides nice. Great in snow.

Weakness:

Too many repairs and the repairs are costly. Can be unreliable because you never know when it will break down.

I love the looks and the ride of the Bravada. However, it has been in the shop more times than all my other cars combined. Each repair costs 1-2 thousand dollars. Luckily I bought the extended warranty. When that''s up in Sept., I am getting rid of it. Just cannot afford the repairs. About every 3 months, something has to be fixed. For a 1997, it only has 55,000 miles so this much breaking down is terrible.

Strength:

Lots of room.... lots of class... lots of comfort and luxury that is as easy to handle as any car I have owned if not easier. I''m very pleased with it overall.

Weakness:

The squeaking of the back glass and difficulty in opening the back door it is in. There is also something a bit odd with the braking system.

This has been pretty much a dream vehicle for me since I live in a hostile environment for most vehicles. It does wonderfully in the snow and is extremely easy to maneuver and handle. I have had little trouble at all out of this vehicle and I have been driving it for the past 4 years with nothing costing me over $200 to fix. I bought the vehicle used. Because I live far from the city I have not noticed the terrible in city gas mileage that others have spoken of here. I normally get close to 25 Mpg here in the wide open wilderness area of North Central Washington. This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. I love it dearly.
