Strength:

very solid car, handles very well in cornering, and looks awsome. I test drove many other suv's and inspite of the higher price, felt very well paying for the value that this suv offers.

Weakness:

would like to have more horse power, but it still sufficient(it not a sports car). would also like a little more head room but that's because I am a tall individual. My girlfriend can't find anything wrong with this car.

32500. would more than highly recomend it. it lacks a little horse power, but the rest of the car more than makes up for it. besides, I'm begging to think that less horse power is probably a blessing in disquise. I can't wait to purchase another one in a few years provided the design and the quality of the vehichle remains the same or better. this suv has changed my life. now i go hiking, mountainbike riding and have simply become more of an outdoor adventurous person. have fun and enjoy.

Off-road handling, looks, Toyota reliability, cargo area, towing.

Weakness:

The "Securikey" alarm Gulf States Toyota put on the vehicle (piece of JUNK), not enough "bells and whistles" for $32k you would expect more

I have had this truck for two years now and love it. The only problem I had was the piece of crap alarm Gulf States Toyota installed on the vehicle, and tried to pass it off as a "genuine" Toyota accessory. The alarm had a mind of its own, would go off when ever it wanted and didn't open the doors more than half the time (especially when it was raining)! After a couple of calls to Toyota Customer Service however, Toyota paid to have an original Toyota alarm installed. The only option Gulf States added that I like is the rear view mirror with integrated compass/therometer. The ride on the highway is a little rough with the 4x4 suspension, but I knew that when I bought it. Off road, the truck is magnificant. I spend a lot of time in the mud during hunting season, and have yet to get stuck. I would recommend this truck to anyone who is looking for a solid vehicle for both off road and on.

Strength:

This SUV has a body that will never go out of style! I have always admired people who had a 4Runner and now I am one of them! WOOWOO! Lots of cargo space, windows that roll ALL THE WAY DOWN, nice stereo/cd/tape deck, feels SOLID when you drive it, nothing rattles or squeaks! GREAT brakes, tranny.

Weakness:

It's a little underpowered. Most SUV's come standard with 220 horsepower. Mine has 183, but that is ok. I don't need to blow by people at 100 MPH. The SUV is not a weakling like the xTerra is. GAWD that thing is BUTT-UGLY!

I would HIGHLY recommend one. If you want more power, go with the TRD Super Charger (as I probably will if I get tired of the average power plant). This is the SAFEST SUV you can buy and by far the BEST LOOKING. They haven't radically changed the design in years and lets hope they never do. I love the look of this vehicle! I got mine right off the delivery truck! (2001 model!) It's the Read Pearl color and it's GORGEOUS! I love all the stares I am getting even if it is a bit pricey, it's well worth what I paid for it!

Model Reviewed: / 4RUNNER SR5 V6

Strength:

BUILT STRONG.

Weakness:

VERY MINOR DETAILS.

I AM POSTING A SECOND REVIEW, BECAUSE I HAVE JUST REPLACED MY 1998 4RUNNER WITH ANOTHER. DUE TO AN UNFORTUNATE SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES, I ROLLED THE LAST 4RUNNER 'THREE' COMPLETE TIMES, AT '75kph' ON A DIRT ROAD IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS. MY WIFE AND I WERE EXTREMELY LUCKY TO WALK AWAY FROM THE ACCIDENT WITH JUST MINOR CUTS AND BRUISES!
BESIDES A GREAT DEAL OF LUCK IN SURVIVING SUCH A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT, IT IS ALSO A FINE TESTAMENT TO TOYOTA FOR THE GOOD DESIGN AND ENGINEERING THAT HAVE GONE INTO THE 4RUNNER. THANK YOU ALL AT TOYOTA FOR MAKING SUCH A "SAFE" VEHICLE.

Model Reviewed: SR5 4WD w/ TRD Supercharger

Strength:

Reliable
Powerful
Handles very well for a truck

Weakness:

Needed just a tad bit more "oomph" Supercharger more than takes care of that! Poor stock GoodYear Tires. IFS is weak for offroading. Smallish Gas tank. Cupholders in an annoying place.

Great truck. Never had a mechanical Failure. Wonderfully laid out controls. Plenty of stock power. Holds its own off-road, even bone stock. Easily added some SERIOUS power with a TRD Supercharger, headers and Borla Exhaust, now puts down around 280HP with a V6!!! Mileage is pretty good, even with the Supercharger. About 15 city and 22 Highway. Climate control is awesome. Heat and A/C are VERY powerful, rear heater is a great option. Pretty kickin stock stereo too (6 speaker). Great cargo room. Strong Truck, I was rearended very hard by a Ford Van, I needed my bumper rehung and a few dents banged out ($1100) and the Aerostar was totaled (and that was before I got a hitch!). I can't say enough good things about this truck, I hope to keep it for ever.

Strength:

Style, Toyota reliability and willingness to stand behind their product. Toyotas last forever. Vehicle handles well, comfortable. Good ground clearance - feels like you're sitting in a truck, not some girly 1/2 car 1/2 suv.

Weakness:

Lack of power, brakes don't seem right for the vehicle, gas tank goes from 1/2 full to empty in about 30 seconds. Rusts to quickly. Can't get mine over 16 mpg.

1992 with 192k miles on it. Had a few problems but Toyota backed them up. Computer chip went after a year, Toyota replace at n/c. Went again exactly one year later and again Toyota replaced at n/c. Head gasket went with almost 100k on it. Toyota replaced at n/c. Head gasket went again 40k later - again Toyota replaced at n/c. Major pain in the ass but at least Toyota stood behind their product without any questions. I guess that's why I won't buy anything else. Fixing rust is a yearly thing after its 4 years old. Even with the above problems I love the 4runner. I hope to have this one for at least another few years. I'd buy another one in a second - I'd definately look into this supercharger everyone talks about to increase its power.

Strength:

It looks good. The radio pulls in about every darn station out there. The sunroof is nice, the back window goes down like a power window.

Weakness:

It's terribly weak. One of the weakest SUVs out there. TERRIBLE. I don't have any idea why Toyota would put out such a terrible engine...probably to match it up with the tranny, so as not to blow it out like Chryslers. Also, the brakes are terrible. Too small or something...I ended up having to replace the rotors instead of just the brakes.

Overall, it's a nice car to drive around the city. Going up mountains, forget about it. American is the way to go. It's a reliable car, almost never breaks down, but it's so weak, it'll piss anyone off that has at least a smidgen of testosterone in them. I swear...I get passed on the hill by little 1.5 liter civics...pathetic. It's so embarassing sometimes. The only thing is that I look cool in this black 4 runner...but that's about it. I always have to drive because no one else has racks to put their boards up on. :P

Everything, I love this SUV! Smooth ride, decent stereo if you get the 6 speaker/CD player one, good ground clearance, handles very well when off-road, lots of cargo room after you fold down the rear seats.

Weakness:

- Small gas tank
- Toyota should make a V8 version of it
- Little on the expensive side, but it's worth it every penny

I got the SR5 with the sports package and pretty much every option that the limited had, except I paid much less and it looks nicer. I love the way the air intake looks on the hood if you get the sports package (Can't get it on the limited). I definetly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a great SUV. I have already put 8000 miles on the past 5 months and all I've done is changing the oil twice.

Strength:

Reliable, enough room for taller people

Weakness:

kind of cramped in the back, a little lack of power on the inclines.

I have never had any problems with my 4Runner. All I've ever had to do was the standard oil changes and tune-ups. I have a 1995 V6 SR5, and there are only a couple of things that I dislike about the truck. It lacks power when going up hill, but turning off the overdrive when climbing helps tremendously and makes it adequate and usually find myself passing other cars with ease if I turn it off right before the hill begins. The other complaint I have is the room for the passengers in the back. I'm 6'4" and whoever sits behind me usually doesn't have any leg room. But being so tall and driving my commute everyday I'm pretty comfortable. I wouldn't suggest it if you were much taller than 6'4" but overall it's fairly comfy.
My 4Runner has always been dependable and I'm very happy with it. I wanted to trade it in after they came out with the new body style in 1996. But after driving the newer model I was quite satisfied with my '95 and didn't think I needed to pay the extra money when what I had was just as good if not better.

Strength:

One of the few remaining SUV that can be called a real truck

Weakness:

Cheaper quality interior materials as compared to my 1995 SR5 V6 model

This is my second 4Runner. Obviously, I like it a lot. It has a good balance of Camry like ride with real truck rugeness.

I never had any mechanical problems with any of them. The bigger engine in the 99 Model was a welcomed relief but could still use a little more power, especially if your pulling a trailer. There is no reason why Toyota engineers can't get 250 hp out of that engine.( Like the new Pathfinder)

My only disapointment was with the quality of the material used for the door and headliner. Also the plastic used on the console does not belong in a Toyota.

But compared to the competition, I still rate it as a best buy.
