Strength:

Engine, all wheel drive, comfort, reliability, resale value.

Weakness:

Gas milage (V6 isn't any better either) I average 17. Don't believe the computer, it always says around 19. Do the math. Stereo isn't anywhere near as good as my Audi. Windows rattle when they are not full up or full down.

I bought this truck with 11,000 miles on it. It has 60,000 on it now. All you have to do is change the oil and put gas in it. The V8 has great power, I tow a 4 place snowmobile trailer and you will forget its behind you if you don't check your mirrors. Speaking of mirrors it has two in the back that you can see through your rear view mirror and see the hitch. You can hook up the trailer all by yourself without a problem. I had a 2000 4 runner and that was a grat truck as well never had a problem after putting over 70,000 miles on it. If reliability and resale value are important to you...buy a Toyota.

Strength:

Great engine. I've also been really impressed with the stability controls. When accelerating in the rain or wet patches on the road the car will correct itself instead of leaving you spun out on the side of the road. Same goes for breaking hard in the rain!

Weakness:

Gas mileage could be better, but it is an SUV. Letting off the gas can give you some serious differences in mpg. I pushed it hard on its first few tanks and was averaging about 15.5 mpg city. Once I got it out of my system and started driving more normal the gas mileage started averaging about 18-19 mpg city. Highway is an easy 22 mpg.

It's an overall great SUV. Solid acceleration (you won't be disappointed with the v6) and the stability controls work very well. A lot of room in the backseat for larger passengers. Looks very good with the hood scoop.

Rattle Trap....

Has Toyota lost their quality??

This is my 2nd Toyota 4runner. My first was a new 2003 that was a complete lemon. The sunroof broke twice with 6 months. The dealearship totally messed up my headliner each time they tried to fix the sunroof. Eventually, after much frustration, the dealer did buy the 2003 back from me and gave me a brand new 2004 for the same payment.

However, the 2004 has been a disappointment. It is a rattle trap. Rattles in the ceiling, Rattles in the rear.. I can barely stand driving it without having the music turned up. And the colder it is, the worse it gets.

Other than the rattle and poor paint quality I do like the ride and all the other features. But for a 40K vehicle, I expect much better build quality from Toyota.

Dealer response (drive shaft issue)

Overall very satisfied with this product. I have over 170,000 miles on my truck and I expect to make to over 200k. The dealer said that my air compressor for the A/C has gone out, but I didn't bother replacing and it still blows cold enough for me.

I did have to replace the bolts that hold the drive shaft on 2 years after I purchased it. The dealer was going to charge me $1000 to replace the whole drive shaft (tech said that Toyota couldn't simply replace the bolt--the whole drive shaft needed to be replace). My husband found a drive shaft (specialist) and they replaced the bolts for $25. That really made me leary of the dealers.

Gas mileage is decent in my opinion I think compared to some other SUVs out there. I can get a little more than 300 miles on a tank. I feel very secure in my truck.

The features to help you not lock your keys inside have helped me out tremendously. I have only locked my keys inside once some mysterious way, but I had a credit card key (luckily) tucked away in my purse. So I still did not suffer.

I keep the oil changed and spark plugs, etc, changed and I feel like this car can do no wrong.

The leather seats are great for the kids (easy to clean).

Only defect I have had in this truck was that the seat adjustment (back part) no longer de/inflates anymore. That went out pretty early on, but it wasn't that big of a deal to me.

Also, I did have quite a hard time getting a front wheel alignment, but I think that may have been in part due to some defective tires I had on it (Goodyear - I assumed this was good quality).

Last thing, it would be nice to have a larger fuel tank. It only holds about 15 gallons, which means more frequent fill ups.

The only thing I have not been 100% happy with from the beginning is the radio sound system. Not a high quality system like I would've expected.

Strength:

Excellent handling, fantastic interior design, solid construction, lots of room. XREAS suspension for that all-around driving. Durable. Oh and it's Toyota!

Weakness:

Gas Mileage is bad. Loads up with 18 gallons of petrol. 17mpg on the streets, 21mpg on the highway. You need lots of money to keep this SUV loaded with petrol.

Excellent 4WD SUV V6 engine from Toyota. I bought this spanking super brand-new. Comes with all leather seats, power seats, individual environment control, front and side airbags, rear audio control, rear seating collapsible, lots of room. Comes with sunroof, heated windows and mirror. This truck will do wonders for you. Easy to handle considering the size of this SUV. The body is based on truck frame so the handling is solid and tight. Comes with 6 JBL Synthesis speakers and a JBL 6 CD-Changer. Easy ON/OFF switch for 2WD and 4WD. Incline control. Michelin tires. Well worth the money I paid for this SUV! Drove it all across East Coast, USA! Of course...it's a Toyota!

Reliability and looks; especially now compared to the newer, disappionting models.

Weakness:

Stiffer ride than some SUVs.

I absolutely love my 4-Runner! I have had my 4-Runner for 5 years and NEVER had any problems. It has 117,000 miles and still gets 19.5 MPG (avg. for hwy and town). Most likely, the owners of 95'-2000 models who complain about their 4-runner haven't maintained them or they are rough with their vehicles. I have looked for a new SUV and the choices are terrible. What happened? The new 4-Runners are not as appealing with all the drastic changes. NOTE: The new interior degrades this vehicle. Toyota, go back to the drawing board. If it's not broke, don't fix it!! I have no idea what my new vehicle will be.

Model Reviewed: 4Runner Limited

Strength:

Drives well in both the city and on the interstate. I drove it thru an ice storm, without the 4-wheel drive on, and it still performed as I expected. Turning radius is much better than I expected. Folding down the back seats to increase the cargo area is very easy, not to mention spacious.

Weakness:

When folding down the back seats to increase the cargo area, the front seats must be up, decreasing the leg room for the front seats. When the seats are down, the back vents are blocked, leaving only the front vents to heat/cool the whole truck.

I really thought I wanted the Highlander, but my husband talked me into test driving the 4Runner. To my surpirse it wasn't as big as I thought. I needed something to carry my dog around in and still have room for others. I knew I wanted leather, so that lead me to the Limited. Didn't really need the sunroof and heated seats, but that all came with it. I drove almost 70 miles out of my hometown to get the one I wanted, and haven't been disappointed yet!

Rough ride, but I'm used to it.

This is my second 4Runner. My first was a 1997 Limited 4X4. It drove flawlessly and had 153,000 miles on it when finally I decided to accept a great offer on it from a private party and buy the final model year of the older styling, which I much prefer to the new styling. My new 4Runner goes like a dream, but I knew it would. I can't imagine a better SUV in any category you can think of.
