Strength:

toyota reliability! it was a good deal, comfortable & roomy enough for my dog!

Weakness:

no interior delayed courtesy lamp (not available in any 4R model), keyless rear window button only goes DOWN...not good when remote gets hit in my purse and I walk out to my car to find the whole rear window down!
Also, could have slightly more luxurious interior options (i.e. Toyota Highlander)

I love my 4Runner! I'm ready to upgrade. I couldn't afford the SR5 at the time of purchase, and now I'm longing for it. I had a sports car before this SUV, and I wanted something taller to compete in this bustling metropolis. I checked other SUV's and this one has all the reputation. And it's met every expectation I had.

My few superficial gripes are listed. I got the option of the security microchip thing, and when I get into the car and close the door...the light goes off so fast. I can't find where the chip goes!
Also, like I said, the rear window button on the keyless entry remote bugs me because I "discover" it is down alot.

Overall, I wanted a "taller" car. I wasn't looking for an off-roading vehicle. The gas mileage isn't the greatest, but it's an SUV. The 4Runner has been a good thing for me. I can't wait for my lease to be up, so I can get an SR5!

Strength:

The room in the back and the confort in ride it gives.

Weakness:

The cost of repair and the engine is weak

I love my truck, other than the minor problems i've had with it and the cost of the repair and parts for this truck, i wouldn't trade it in for the world. The truck has a weak engine but handles offroad very well if you're careful and is a good family vehicle and traveling is a breeze in it.

What a feeling those can give you!! It's been about 3 years that i was considering to buy a SUV.. but i really didn't knew wich one was the right for me.. i'd test many type and models from month to month.. but my search stopped as soon as i drove a 4Runner..
i bought a 1990 Runner SR5 fully loaded with about 120 000km on it..
nice shapes, strong truck, like a Toy! ;o)
if someone try to steal it from me.. I'LL KILL HIM!!!!
i'll never have a car again.. i'll continu my love story with these 4Runner till i die!

Model Reviewed: 4Runner Limited 4WD

Strength:

Good ride for an suv, pretty nice leather, comfortable front and back, nice sunroof, much more functional and better than any of the soccor mom suvs (ie the rx300)

Weakness:

don't like the front cup holder placement (covers hvac controls), trunk space can be cramped, esp if you plan on a weekend for four with snowboards, interior styling lacks many of the modern amenities that newer suvs have

Overall the 4rnr is a pretty reliable suv that can carry most of the things you want to carry. It can be a little cramped on long trips if you have more than three people. If you are an audiophile, then you'll definitely be disappointed with the factory sound, 2 tweeters and 4 4'' speaker. Overall I like the 4rnr, but would have much rather spent the extra money and gotten a 98 land cruiser.

Model Reviewed: SR5 5-speed

Strength:

Body and paint in great condition. Stereo system, sunroof.

Weakness:

High service and repair costs, lack of power, assistance from Toyota when significant problems occur.

Overall I enjoyed the 4runner and I was willing to pay extra for the quality and reliability. I built a good rapport with the Toyota dealer service shop staff and felt comfortable taking my 4runner there for service. I performed all recommended service, which was not cheap, but I felt comfortable with their advice. However, this past winter the motor blew with only 120,000 miles on it. The service shop could only determine that it was something in the lower unit, but wanted $1,200 to tear apart the motor to try and identify the specific problem. Then I would be out an additional $4,000 minumum to rebuild. With estimates as high as $8,000 for a new V6 motor. Needless to say, I did not go that route and wholesaled it out in a not running condition for $2,000. I was very disheartened at this point and feel that I really took a beating, financially, on this vehicle. I purchased the vehicle used, with only 60k on the motor, for $18,000 (not counting approximately $3,000 in service and maintenance), and only got 4.5 years service out of it. This was a very costly vehicle to own in the end, and Toyota was not willing to help whatsoever. Basically, the only answers I got was that *&%^$%# happens!

Explorers - the 4runner was much nicer and better looking than most other SUVs during the 90's.
