Toyota Highlander (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

Toyota Highlander (2010 and older) SUV | Crossover

DESCRIPTION

The Highlander is Toyota’s car-based midsize SUV, built on a unibody platform with 4-wheel independent suspension. The Highlander offers a tight, quiet ride like a midsize sedan with the higher ride height, available 4-wheel drive, and cargo capacity of a midsize SUV.

The Highlander scores high for its refinement, quiet interior, ride comfort, and flexible and roomy second-row seat. Its 3.5-liter V6 delivers solid performance and 18 mpg overall. The third-row seat is tight and does not fold in a 50/50 split. A new 2.7-liter four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic is available on FWD models.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Highlander 4 Cylinder

Strength:

- Smooth ride and peppy for 4 cylinders - Good styling (some say boring, but with running boards and spoiler, I disagree) - Roomy - Comfortable - Toyota reliability; not one manufacturing problem in the 5,000 miles I have owned it.

Weakness:

*Gas mileage; even with 4 cylinders, I am getting only 18 mpg in the city- terrible!!! The sticker stated 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway- what a lie!!! *The interior choices are a joke- if you have young children, they will mess up the light color cloths in a heartbeat. *No automatic door locks- even my 1991 Plymouth had these. *Yes, the rear window noise is nasty, but not as bothersome compared to the other weaknesses I have mentioned. * Goodyear Tires; can anyone say "Michelin" or "Dunlop?"

The 4 cylinder is a good family car for in town type of driving. It is powerful enough for most driving situatons, and very stylish despite what many reviewers seem to say. Only on the freeway on-ramp, and up steep hills have I had any power needs. Because of the smooth ride and the decent price, the 4 cylinder is worth consideration; my real beef is with the dissapointing gas mileage. The quality is impeccable- these Highlanders are built completely in Japan at their award-winning plant.

Strength:

Powerful engine, smooth ride, roomy interior, excellent fit and finish, and top notch resale value and Toyota realibility.

Weakness:

Lacking Navi as an option.

Excellent SUV for the price. The quality rivals Lexus if not identical. It is very smooth and powerful with the 220hp V6. Bought it for the cabinet in Big Bear... can't wait to try out the AWD system during the winter time. Overall impression and experience with this vehicle is top notch.

Strength:

Smooth, enjoyable ride never want to stop driving. Classy interior. Comfortable. I have been Toyota owner since 1989. Service is GREAT!

Weakness:

Stereo has got to go! Aerodynamics.

I wanted a BWM 325 and drove off in a Highlander. Fell in love with the Highlander when I saw it on the show room floor. Then I drove it and it drove so smooth. I enjoy driving it so much I never want to stop driving. Compares to other Luxury SUV's without braking the bank.

Strength:

Drivetrain performance, relatively smooth ride, interior layout, storage areas, engine compartment, fit and finish, excellent sunroof and full size luggage rack, reliability, resale value.

Weakness:

A selection of a slightly darker interior color. Only light gray and white available.

After 5600 miles, absolutely no complaints or problems with 6 cyl, 4WD. Just returned from long trip to northern Maine. We found a great ride cruising at 75MPH, and on back-woods roads with some 4 wheeling. Not even a single rattle! Pulls a 19' boat with ease. Excellent performance/design as we expected, having owned a Camry (125K) and a Toyota Van (280K). Open back window does create annoying wind pressure noise, but so do most cars; a 92 LeSabre does same thing. Just another vehicle thoughtfully created by Toyota. Even engine compartment is well done-it's very mechanic-friendly. Tire size is $$ friendly (compare to Murano tires!!) We will enjoy driving this a very long time. So why can't American cars be made this way???

Bought first model year (even though people say not to buy first model year cars). Absolutely love it. Got the Limited edition without the leather.

Strength:

1)smooth ride 2)comfy back seats, adjustable too 3)resale

Weakness:

1)not enough knee room 2)noisy at higher speeds 3)front seats need better shape 4)anemic styling

I must be the only person on the planet who doesn't like their Highlander. Mine's a Limited Edition with every option. Around town at low speeds, the HL is quiet but at 70MPH, it's a different story. The two front passengers have to raise their voices to talk. The knee room for the driver is limited for male drivers, especially on the left side where the door panel protrudes outward too far. The seats are too flat and not molded enough to hold me in place while cornering. I end up sliding around all over the place. Mine has several annoying squeeks already...one behind the driver's left ear where the seat belt attaches to the side, and another somewhere in the back seat. Also, my left rear speaker rattled. And I'm not a loud stereo-person either so I didn't cause this contrary to what Toyota says.

Weakness:

Helicopter Pulsating when any red necks ride around with the rear windows down and the front windows up (????????)

Just bought a Highlander today. I have one word for it "TIGHT". I love it. I was almost scared off by the reviews talking about the Helicopter wind noise. They are accurate, but on the way up I rolled the back 2 windows down and I got some of the same "pulsating". Besides, Nobody rides with the back windows down and the front up. I would not be deterred by that insignificant opportunity. I also thought the JBL system sounded great. I am a tough sound critic also. I sure you can put in an aftermarket system that sounds better but I would not bother. Sounds great to me. I would say the quietness and smoothness of the ride are its best qualities. I had no problem with any back problems on a very long ride. The car does have a trip odometer (as a matter of fact 2 different trip odometers) unlike the ignorant fellow who said he wished he had one. Great SUV. I got 24+ on the rode with the V6 Limited. I would recommend for anyone who wants a mid-size SUV. Ford, Gm, Mazda, Hyundai, or Nissan haven't got anything for the YODA.

Model Reviewed: Toyota Highlander Limited

Strength:

Very comfortable, smooth quiet ride, luxurious leather interior, roomy, along with solid feel and handling of the V6 and four-wheel-drive. Great interior configuration, console, and compartments (finally a place to store my purse either in the open slot beneath the center console or between the armrests).

Weakness:

My only disappointment with the Toyota Highlander is no option to get driver-seat memory or a Navigation system/DVD player/backup camera monitor option.

I absolutely LOVE my Toyota Highlander Limited!! Very comfortable, smooth quiet ride, luxurious leather interior, roomy, along with solid feel and handling of the V6 and four-wheel-drive. Great interior configuration, console, and compartments (finally a place to store my purse -- either in the open slot beneath the center console or between the armrests). I come from a family of Toyota vehicle owners, from 2 Corollas, Camry, Solara, Toyota pickup trucks and Sienna minivan. Not to mention the great reliability, Toyota provides much higher quality and better value in the interior than their competitors' vehicles, like compared to the cheap leather material and dashboard in the Honda Accord or no sunroof option in the Honda Pilot, plastic-like material in the Mazda 6, or uncomfortable seats in the Subaru Forester, or skimpy storage bins & cupholders in the German cars (VW Passat, Touareg, Audi A4 & A6). My only disappointment with the Toyota Highlander is no option to get driver-seat memory or a Navigation system/DVD player/backup camera monitor option. Too much trouble and cost to add-on after-market ($3000). I would really like to see these features added on as standard or options in the future Highlanders and would consider trading-in my existing one for a new one.

Smooth ride, handling and safety, coupled with great gas mileage, durability, dependability, style, and great looks.

Weakness:

The back windows?

I have owned this vehicle since 04-15-03 and it has been nothing short of a great experience for me. I owned the 1990 Lincoln Towncar prior to this vehicle, so luxury I know, quality sound systems I know, and the my 2003 Highlander has so far been a very good investment, hopefully long term. I have read some of the other reviews for this product and boy do I have some questions for those that knock the product; Although, I agree with the back window noise, why-oh-why would you ever need to roll down the back window on a road trip with such an absolutely great environmently controlled AC/Heating and filtering system of the Highlander. Smooth ride, handling and safety, coupled with great gas mileage, durability, dependability, style, and great looks override any flaws I've dealt with so far

CANNOT OPEN REAR WINDOWS WITHOUT EXPERIENCING A PULSATING PRESSURE THAT IS PAINFUL TO ALL OCCUPANTS. THIS IS WELL DOCUMENTED SINCE 2001 AND TOYOTA CUSTOMER RELATIONS IS AWARE AND FREELY ADMITS THAT THIS OCCURS IN ALL HIGHLANDERS. IF YOU DON'T OPEN THE WINDOWS THAN SPENDING 30K IS OK. DO NOT PURCHASE A HIGHLANDER WITHOUT TEST DRIVING ONE WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN!!! nowindowpain@aol.com

WE PURCHASED THE HIGHLANDER FOR IT'S CAR-LIKE RIDE AND IN THAT RESPECT IT IS AN EXCELLENT SUV FOR MY WIFE. THE INTERIOR IS NICELY LAID OUT WITH MOST CONTROLS EASILY ACCESSIBLE.
