Strength:

Luxurious, high seating position, safety features, V8!, great stereo, craftsmenship, build quality and toyota dependibility.

Weakness:

not much, gas milage sucks (12 mpg), part-time 4WD would be more practical and economical

55-56K. Of course fore those willing ot pay the price for the greatest vehicle ever produced.

Strength:

I love the styling, and the size is just perfect. Offroad Capabilities are amazing. I am one of the few who actually takes their overpriced SUV off the pavement regularly. It is fun watching other trucks and SUV's get stuck in the mud and sand, While I easily pull through. The Landcruiser Name speaks for itself. 50 years of quality trucks. Fold up seats in the rear are really helpful for creating extra room. I have used that room in the back to build a competition stereo system. Toyota dependability and reliability. In over 90,000 miles of use it has had no major trips to the mechanic except routine checkups and oil changes. EVERYTHING.. has worked fine. If you are kind to this car it is kind to you. All Wheel Drive rules. This Truck is a tank, I was rearended by a Nissan Pickup truck a few months back. I ended up with a few minor scratches on my bumper and it was pushed a little out of place. The nissan Pickup truck was about totaled i think. The nissan could not start after it hit my Cruiser and the P/u looked pretty jacked up. The overall Durability of this SUV amazes me.

Weakness:

First complaint of most Pre 1998 Landcruiser owners is the power of this beast. A v-8 engine should have been put in much earlier, although the 4.5 L six does its job very well. TRD- Toyota racing devolopment does not offer many modification parts for the cruiser. Would be cool to see a turbocharger available. 50K SUV and leather is not standard????? yea thats right... I am living with a cloth interior. No fancy electronic GPS navigation, even in the 2000 model. I go through Brake pads like they are nothing. MPG is really bad. I get about 12-13 mpg. I like to treat my Cruiser with supreme gas. NO ARMRESTS.... for something so small to not include it has become a large issue on long trips. I dont remember if the newer 98 + models have armrests in the drivers seat, but they should.

One could say that this SUV is an overpriced waste of space, but i beleive that the Landcruiser is one of the finest SUV's ever made. We bought this new in 95' for about $50,000. No wonder they have used the Landcruiser in the outbacks of Australia and around the world for so many years. I received this SUV two years ago on my 16th birthday, it had belonged to my mother prior... and pondered about getting a domestic truck because all my friends had tricked out Tahoes and expeditions. I just could not convince myself too get one of those domestic trucks, they were having so much problems with them. I would Definatly Recommend the Landcruiser to anyone who is serious about getting a world class SUV.

Strength:

None to list.

Weakness:

Not really a Land Cruiser... Overpriced. Spare parts offroad..

Took a '99 for a test drive. What a POS if you want to take it on some serious offroad. It's more like an oversized and overpriced 4Runner. It's luxurious yeah.. But I want functionality. The IFS and full time 4WD is great if all you want is a grocery getter and live where it snows ALOT. Toyota hasn't imported a REAL Land Cruiser (FJ40) to the US since 1983... To it's advantage the V8 is nice, and the ride is smooth. But, again, take it offroad, and you will break the entire drive train. Not to mention repair costs. If you want something offroad worthy, get an FJ60 or better yet an FJ40. For the money, I will take 2 1969-1983 FJ40's 2 1989 FJ62's and have enough left over to buy a Camry for around town.

Strength:

Big, solid truck. Very capable on/off road. Lots of luxo features and does not give up any off-road ability. Excellent build quality and resale value. Timing chain should go 100-120k, not a rubber belt that needs a $1700 service every 60k.

Weakness:

15 mpg freeway or street. I hear that these trucks eat brake pads every 15k. Expensive (but worth every penny!) to buy.

What a solid, well built machine! I have always wanted a LC and recently bought this 96 with 58k miles on it. Great build quality. Looks and runs like new. Still has 6 year/100k Toyota "Factory Certified Vehicle" warranty. This is a great vehicle! It puts the Montero Sport to shame. I have owned many trucks in the past, but never have been as satisfied with the quality and features as I have with the LC. If the price and mileage do not scare you, definitely recomended!

Had a 98 Mitsubishi Montero Sport that was traded in. What a difference. The LC is built much better, "cleaner" and tighter.

Strength:

-Solid build.
-Solid handling.
-Strong V8 a much needed improvement over previous models. -Full time 4wd is sure footed.
-Off road capability.
-Third row seating is comfortable, more room than the Dodge Durango.
-Seating comfort is great on long trips.
-Dealer service is outstanding.

Value: This new/current body style is great and the new interior is well laid out and loaded with features. It's unusual for a truck to hold its value, but this one and the previous one have done so. I had a '91 Land Cruiser that I bought for $25,000 and sold it in early '99 for $13,000 with over 110,000 miles on it!

Weakness:

Major: No rear air conditioning. Stock tires don't corner as well as Michelins or Yokohamas.

Minor: Some of the plastic covers for the seat belt anchors have broken off.

I paid approximately $51,000 and got it loaded with everything including a tow package. Unless you have to have the Lexus name (for the LX470), stay with the Toyota. It is essentially the same vehicle.

I currently have about 35,000 miles on my truck and have had no major problems. The dealer service is outstanding. Both the Toyota dealers here in Ohio and from our old dealer in Utah understand customer service.

Minor annoyances include console storage has too many "layers". The extra cup holders-tray inside the console doesn't make any sense.

Compare the other high-end sport utes and you'll feel more confident in bad weather with the handling you have in the Toyota. It's off-road capability is excellent.

Strength:

Commanding, reliable, refined, well engineered and relatively safe. It holds its value.

Weakness:

Dash, and for that matter, anywhere else but the center console, is not friendly for auxialiary equipment. Center console has some functional oddities, but the basics are there. Engine is described by everyone as being silky-smooth, but there is a rough idle point at about 1000rpm that is found on 98-99 models. It's not terrible, but since the performance is excellent otherwise, it stands out. Toyota can't find the problem. (Would like to hear from others on this) Of course, gas mileage is deplorable, but one shouldn't complain if you can afford the vehicle. After all, it's almost 3 tons of killing machine life insurance.

$47.4 loaded - yes, near cost and great (unusual) deal.
If you are particular, appreciate good engineering (or can't tolerate mediocrity) and want a big SUV, there is no choice if money isn't an issue. After going to the top of a steep boulder ridden mountain and bottoming just once, I wondered how I was going to get back down. That's when I realized I didn't have it in low and neither of the differentials were locked! (Don't buy it without the rear air package.)

Nissan Pathfinder and good exposure to earlier (pre-88) L.C. models. The 99 LC is in a league of its own, except for its earlier models. The most outstanding attribute, compared to '97 and before of course is the V8, making the vehicle "complete".

Strength:

Very fast V8, great improvement to the previous six. Radio controls are easier to use while driving, same great car as the previous. The best thing about the rear seat is that now it reclines, unlike the previous model. Great for passing, the engine doesn't have to work as hard on hills/elevation. Great for the snow, can't get this thing stuck, unless you can't drive. Point and drive even for the most extreme off road.

Weakness:

Take Super Unleaded, high gloss paint looks great when clean, but scrapes easily when going through bush, or whatever...

Bought used, 1998 5K, $43,000, green with leather. This SUV is huge, very well made, and isn't full of plastic that rattles off road. This baby is made in Japan, where the history of the Landcruiser culminates into the current generation. I drove the Tundra truck with an even more powerful V8, which will be in the Sequoia SUV(coming out this fall).

This car is a beast, in sheep clothing. Great for town, but very capable for anything on earth, except boulders. Why buy a little SUV where you are the same level as cars? Or at least bumper wise? My sister was rear ended in our old cruiser, and all we got on our car was paint on our trailer hitch, while the other car had a busted front end, with a huge puncture in the radiator...

I would want to be in this car if I got into an accident. But I would cry to see this beauty hurt. My friend's backed into my car parked, new from bumper ~$1500. But that's it. You should see his car!

These cars are so well made, I could see them going beyond 300K in miles. I say a few of LC with extremely high miles in Australia. This isn't an American built car with parts or the entire car that has a built in obsoleteness.

Similar Products Used:

1994 Landcruiser, the V8 makes the new generation that much better. I had to have my previous cruiser buffered after one hell of an offroad adventure. Through Oregon mud, clay, it just wouldn't stop. One time I got so stuck, I got a bucket of gravel, and got out of a clay-pit and put it under only one tire.

The Land Rover is Nice to drive off Road, my friend has '94 Defender (best Rover, for anything, especially without top). And '98 Rover 4.6. Which is too nice to take off roading. The electronics on the Rover are ridiculous, at night some buttons don't light up, or sometimes the Rover doesn't go up and down.

Strength:

Reliable, reliable and safe

Weakness:

hmmm, it's a truck?

This truck performs. period. It's built to be field stripped in the congo, rain forrest or just about anywhere. Where i live, there are plenty of friendlt mechanics to do that for me but fortunately, the truck has not experinced any problems, just the typical scheduled maintenance.

Actually, the truck belongs to my wife who doesn't, well, change the oil or really do anything to keep the truck running like it should. And the truck just keeps running without any issues.....

We've got two young kids and head to Tahoe in the winter so saftey going over the mountain is an issue. The Crusier [w/o chains] buzzes along just fine while we watch others get stuck or have to put chains on.

It's a bit expensive but if you want a true 4x4 with reliability and great, but rather 'manly' looks, the crusier is hard to beat. If you're more into a 'car' type ride and need luxury you can always buy the Lexus version and pay an additional $15k for the same thing.

Either way, the crusier rules!

stock springs too soft, gas mileage sucks (12mpg)

This is a great truck, it defines the standard against which all other SUV's are measured.
These things are used all over the world from Antartica to the Sahara, for good reason.
I have taken it all over Southern Cal. (desert, beach, mountains, freeway) It does it all in style.
