5.3 liter engine and trans with tow option. 6000lbs. tows like a dream.

Weakness:

The shocks that came with the truck were dissappointing. I have better shocks on my Geo. I replaced them with KYB Monomax shocks no more problems.

18000 miles. This is a no frills truck rubber floors, crank down windows, am/fm radio, great turning radious (short bed)which helps a lot with my 18' trailer. the 5.3 with the HD trans with tow option makes it a tow beast. I have had very good luck with this truck. avg 15-19 mpg towing avg 12-15. rides like a truck after I replaced the shocks. I work this truck like crazy and it just takes it.

Very reliable. Even after 370.000 kilometers (canadian model) it's still running as smooth as new! The car was imported to the Netherlands in 1997 and since then it is running on liquified petroleum gas wich is cheap. It uses about 1 liter to every 6 kilometers and that is very good!

Weakness:

Oil leaking steering pump and rust on te bottom of the cab and rear fenders.

The price is in Dollars, in Euro's it was 11.000 in february 2004. In this part of the world that is a reasonable price for an old truck like this. These old types are the real pickup trucks. Square and big, shiny and black, that's what i wanted when i bougth this truck. It's a 4 wheel drive version with all i need like airco, power windows, automatic transmision and cruise control.

plenty of power. reliable. decent gas mileage for a truck this size with this size engine.

Weakness:

The paint. It is total b.s. that the paint fall off the truck. Chevrolet should have recalled all these trucks with bad paint and fix them at no cost.

I am the 2nd owner. 1st owner used it to pull a landscape trailer, and had the truck lowered. I bought it at 150k. It now has 230k. The truck still passes the smog check. I've had to replace the started about 10 times, but maybe that's because I bought a starter at Kragen Auto Parts. The trans had to be replaced at 190k. The valve guides must be a bit worn because there is a puff of smoke when I start it up in the morning. I've had to replace the A/C compressor and the radiator, and had to repair a lot of oil leaks. But, what do you expect for this many miles? Overall the truck has been very reliable. The paint has mostly peeled off which is common for chevy's of this vintage. The fuel pump went out at 160 k. If I drive 65 on a long trip it gets 17+ mpg. This kind of truck is real popular in California. It had one break-in and was stolen once.

a) Poor quality. b) far to many problems for such a pricy vehical c) Poor gas milage

I have owned GM products for the past 25 years. Originally bought this truck because of its power and look. Hey its a Z71 model. :-) Big dissappointment. All the known issues have arisen. From the clunk in the drive train to the clunk in the stearing column. It rides like a tank and the wind noise on the extended cab rear windows is awful. Gas milage from this 5.3 is roughly 12 MPG. Seems GM let a lot of quality issues get by them on their premium p/u. This vehicle is over $50K new here in Canada and given the current quality issues that GM has labeled as "Normal", the bang for the buck is not there.

NOT like a rock.

Overated piece of junk. Used oil. Gas mileage??? How do poor rednecks afford to scoot around in these things??? A lot of slack in differential. Horrible ride. Hideous seats. Very few of the controls were within reach. Literally had to lean to use radio. I've driven the later model ones, they aren't any better. As a mechanic, I see more of these things than just about any other vehicle in the shop.

Model Reviewed: K3500 extended cab 4x4 Duramax/Allison

Strength:

Duramx diesel engine and Allison Transmission. Fuel economy. Antilock brakes. Power Mirrors, Heated seats, interior layout with overhead console is fabulous.

Weakness:

Because I'm tall, I can't see stop lights when stopped at the line. If the truck had two or three cameras mounted on it, it would be perfect. I plan to add them soon. One for traffic lights, one for hitching up, one for the blind spot, and another to remotely mount on a trailer.

I have ~40,000 miles on this truck after 3 years of use. Purchased new in Nov/2001 and it is now Sept/2004. The truck is fast and powerful. It has no chips or mods to the engine—I never felt I needed more power. However, I might have lost a tiny bit of power, which I attribute to the fuel injector issue listed below. The truck has performed faultlessly during this period, with the exception of the CD player, which now skips and hangs up--probably because I used it constantly. RECALL NOTICES: I received notices from Chevrolet for the tailgate support cables and the fuel injectors. I haven't had any problems with the fuel injectors, so I plan to try to get Chevrolet to replace them somewhere down the line. FUEL FILTERS: It is commonly understood the Duramax and all other modern diesels need better fuel filters. Most people put on the Caterpillar 2 micron filter kit sold by Nictane--I recommend it. For any brand diesel truck, this is a smart move as the tolerances for the injectors are in the 5-8 micron range and can cause damage. Fuel at truck stops only, to get the best quality, best-filtered fuel. Perhaps this is why I've had no injection problems. TIRES: One front tire blew out on me while I was standing next to it, parked. I drove over a branch in the road a few days eariler. I could not avoid it and a sharp edge was jammed between the sidewall and the control arm puncturing the sidewall. I discovered this when I pulled the tire off. The stock tires have held up too well. I've been hoping they will wear out, but they don't. The stock tires on the 2001 dually, were Goodyear Wrangler AT/S 215-85/16's. Too small to look right on the truck, and while they perform great on-road, and ok off-road and in the snow, they are not Bridgestone REVO’s which are the top rated tire for this sort of truck. Unfortunately, I probably will get another 20,000 miles out of these Goodyear's. I may have to reconsider, and buy another set in 245-75/16’s next time since they last so long. I don't rotate my tires. That would be a pain with dually rear tires. Rotating is stupid. My four rear dual tires show very little wear and lots of tread depth at 40,000 miles! Amazing! Almost all wear occurs on the front tires. Be smart, keep new tires on the sterring wheels, and leave the back ones alone. When I had the blow out, at about 32,000 miles, that was about when I would normally, have pulled the front ones off. I bought one new tire and swapped the new spare to the other side. I expect the back tires will still outlast the new front tires. When the time comes to get new tires, I plan to buy 8 and another rim--so I have two spares for a trip up the Dempster highway next fall. PARKING: My truck is a dually, with 4 wheel drive, and LT options. It's a heavy truck but fairly nimble--does that sound funny? I use it for a daily driver, and use two parking spaces due to it's length, or else back in to spaces to put the overhang behind the rear axles over the sidewalk. It works for me. The power mirrors are great. I find I have a blind spot, like most trucks, so I rotate my outer mirror out to point it at my blind spot--that works well. I use them every day, constantly changing them up or down for backing up, so I can see where I'm going. I added backup lights in the back and they worked well until I backed into my trailer and broke them. Back-up lights are essential--get some. SEATS: I love the seats. Chevrolet has the most comfortable seats I've every seen in any vehicle, anywhere, and I've tried them all. Power every which way and heated. I wish the heated part went higher up the back to the upper back, and may modify them for this—that would make them perfect. To give you and example how comfortable they are, I've driven cross-country in this truck three times. By changing the contours of the seat, and getting out and stretching frequently, I can drive 1000 miles easily. My record is 1500 miles in one day, and I could have gone farther if I didn’t have to sleep—that is comfort. FUEL ECONOMY: 15 mpg around town, and in stop and go traffic 15mpg. On the highway w/o AC @ 70 mph--16.9 mpg. At 90 mph or better, 13 mpg into the wind with AC on, and 1000 lbs of payload. I installed a 53 gallon Aerotank replacement fuel tank--doubles my range, truck rides better. My best range was 875 miles, driving at 65 mph I’m confident I can get over 900 miles on the highway. REGRETS: I wish I got the crew cab instead of the extended cab. My last Chevy truck lasted 265,000 miles. I expect I'll keep this one for the rest of my life, perhaps buying a Suburban if they every come out with one the Duramax/Allison combo.

Model Reviewed: Chevrolet Silverado SWB K1500 4wd

Strength:

Well built, good tight 5 spd, the V-6 pulls strong for what it is. Good price - lots of incentives - TX/OK/LA discount, 5 spd discount, 6 cyl, discount, $4,000 rebate - $19,000 for a new 4wd. Can't beat the price.

Weakness:

Need to make that 5 spd more available. They don't market it, and it is available only in the most inexpensive models. 40-20-40 seat - the center section does not fold down into an armrest. You have to spend $4,000 more for the LS package for the smae seat to fold down. Cheapo move!

I couldn't stand the automatic in the Mazda so I went back to a Chevy 4wd. It took some doing to find a 5spd, not one in the entire state of Texas; I located one at a small dealership in rural Lousiana. It has the 4.3 l. V-6. OK, the engine doesn't have a lot of snuff out on the freeway, but combined with the low gear, it is very good for crawling off-road. I cruise the freeway 60-65, instead of the 75 which I did with the Mazda and the other Chevy's I've owned. My 1993 Chevy had a V-6, listed at 155 hp that seemed a little stronger, but it was a lighter 2wd with smaller tires. This engine is rated at 195 hp which is more than the 1995 305 V-8 had. To put it in perspective, the V-6 in the half-ton SWB has about as much smoke as my big heavy 3/4 350 1999 Suburban - i.e.; plan your passing on a 2 lane road well in advance! Summary - as you can see below, with the exception of the Mazda, I've been Chevy for over 30 years. I can see nothing in this vehicle that is going to change that. Highly recommended. The vehicle is put together very well, dispite a lot of the complaints I've seen in these reviews. Yes, the interior has a lot of plastic, but it is not light and chintzy - the Mazda was. They do seemed to have scrimped a little - on my 1995 there were more interior lights and the transfer case console lit up indicating what gear you were in. On the 2004, it is does not have lights. On the whole, one gets a feeling of a very solid vehicle. The handling is very tight, but a little less percise than the 1995. This may be due to the oversize Goodyear MTR mud tires I put on. They may be taking a little engine strength, too. It has 4 wheel disc brakes - and this is why I bought the 2004 instead of the 05. The 05's, for some unknown reason, are going back to disc/drums on the half tons. Also they have 17 inch rims - good for highway cornering, but I prefer the 04's 16 inch rims for off road. The smaller rim gives more flotation and less likely to throw a bead. I would have preferred a V-8, but there was absolutely none available with the 5 spd. The six is not underpowered, but it does take some time to pass on the freeway, plus a downshift into 4th. I did notice a separate catalytic converter for each cylinder bank leading into a single muffler. This is good candidate for a set of cat-back duals in the very near future. I bought this instead of a Jeep Rubicon. I figured the Chevy 6 was better the the Jeep inline, plus the short bed gives me tons more room than the Jeep. Ford doesn't even offer a stick on the new F-150 and Dodge, well, I just don't like the styling.

Weakness:

not enough equipment options(motors/trans). Thin sheet metal (coke can)

As you can see by my user name I was raised where there were only 3 kinds of trucks and that is what I drove until 1990. I bought a new GMC 4X4 in 1987 in Portland OR., and moved to San Diego. The truck disentigrated at 80,000 miles, so many things broke I couldn't fix them all on the weekends. I got it back to running and needing something dependable to get me to work (Navy don't play the car is broke game), with transmission slipping I slunk down to a Toyota dealer and traded it on a new little red V6 4X4. Well, my daddy disowned me and my brothers threatened to come out to CA and whup me but I drove that thing off the lot and after 272,000 freeway and desert off-roading miles with NOT ONE SINGLE problem I traded it on a used Corvette. Big mistake!!! One year later and thousands of dollars in corvette repairs I went back to another new Toyota, a white 1996 V6 4X4. Four years and 150,000 miles of again NO PROBLEM driving later I trade it on a 2001 SS Camaro, the Camaro is also a rolling piece of junk and in 2002 I was in new 02 Tundra extended cab 4X4. After 2 years and 67,000 miles of socal freeway driving at speeds of 75-90 mph and weekends spent thrasing it in the desert and sand dunes I have not had ONE, I SAY AGAIN, NOT ONE thing go wrong with that truck. It has not even been close to a dealers lot. Oil changes every 5,000 and transmission flushes every 30,000 miles. It is as fast, quiet and silky smooth as the day it came off the lot, the only thing I had to do to it was lift it 3 inches and put BFG 285's on it and it will go anywhere any 4 wheeled vehicle will go. I tell you all this so you know where I am coming from. I absolutely love the new look of the Chevy Silverado and have been desperatly trying to find data that supports claims that GM has improved its quality so I can buy one. Unfortunatly, I haven't been able to find evidence to support those claims.....I tried to stay loyal to the general, but he keeps letting me down. Out in the desert, I used to notice guys with nice big domestic trucks standing around their trucks and I thought they were partying. One day I asked why they didn't drive more since the weekends are so short. Someone said they aren't partying, they are broke down!!!!!! Toyotas are not perfect, they have a brake issue with a few trucks, luckily I don't have it on mine. If I bought a domestic, I could go home and leave the Republic of Kalifornia, see my pa again. But the quality is not there so I guess I will have to pass on the Silverado and possibly look at the 2005 Tundra that has 45 more horsepower a 5 speed automatic tranny and a lot of other upgrades or possibly the 2006 which is supposed to be a monster. Sorry if I bored or offended anyone, I know how much Toyotas are disliked by domestic drivers as evidenced by my kin fold but I thought I would try to cheer you guys up a little.
