Strength:

A Swiss Army Knife of a vehicle. Luxury inside...Sweet leather butckets, 6 disc CD player, Sun/Moon Roof. Power rear window at the touch of a button.

Weakness:

Nasty overhead switch for the sun/moon roof...No Center Detent, Nice to guess the closed position at 60 MPH, well the sound helps!

Get it it you haul mulch, kids, and go to Valet attended eateries...Everyone looks.

Weakness:

Driver legroom, Low-speed steering shudder, Driver legroom, Ford quality isn't always Job 1, American made, Ford leather, and Gas mileage.

I bought my 2001 Harvest Gold with every option but sunroof and 4 wheel drive for $24,600, T.T.&L included. The sticker was $27,010 with a dealer mark-up of $1,995 (VIN # etching on all glass, Environmental Protection Package, and Adjusted Market Value) for a grand total of $29,005. I was able to get that price with alot of negotiating but seeing as how the economy isn't so great and cars aren't selling well you should be able to get a good deal on a Sport Trac. I had wanted one since the first time I saw one at a car show. The ST is one of the best looking vehicles on the road and it's unique. I get alot of stares from other drivers and people love the looks of the ST. The designer at Ford responsible for the ST's lines deserves an award .

I love verything about my ST, it has alot of great features. One of my favorites is the electric rear window that you can vent about 2" or completely lower for a breezy open feeling. The composite bed is scratch and dent proof and the cargo cage is a useful item as well as the rear power outlet. The rear seats fold down so you can store items in the rear cab. The Pioneer 6 disc changer in the dash is a nice unit loaded with features, the sound is awesome for a stock stereo and it comes with a subwoofer mounted behind the rear seat, the sound system is easily upgradeable. The upper console houses a remote/sunglass holder and a compass and temp guage. The power leather seats are very supportive and have articulating head restraints and a lumbar adjustment.

The center console houses two adjustible cup holders and two storage bins. The rear of the console houses A/C vents and controls as well as radio controls for your passengers. The A/C system really cranks out the cold air which is a highlight of most of Fords vehicles. The only knock I would have on the interior of the ST is the driver legroom, it's limited if your over 6'1". I'm 6'3" tall and weigh 220Lbs and the legroom is bad, my knees almost touch the dash and I can't raise my left leg and rest it on the door panel because the steering wheel is right on me. I traded in a 99' SuperCab Ranger and the legroom in it was much better than the ST, for a four door SUV the legroom should be bettter. The rubber floors provide great sound insulation from road noise and the berber carpet floormats are a clever touch.

The ST rides very smooth and quiet for an SUV due to the lengthening of the standard Explorer frame and use of different suspension bushings. The Sport Trac has a longer wheelbase than an Explorer. We have the worst roads in the US and it's as smooth as can be, my wife has a Suburban and the ST rides almost as good. The 4.0 V6 provides plenty of smooth responsive power. It's a bit of a gas hog but if you nurse the pedal you should get decent gas mileage. I have been over 80MPH on the interstate and it's a stable, smooth, quiet ride with plenty of power in reserve. The brakes provide quick and straight stopping power. The power steering makes a slight shudder/vibration at low/parking speeds. Ford is aware of the problem and working on a fix, it's a minor nuisance and I didn't notice it on my intial test drive. Make sure you take it on an extended test drive because it's such a cool vehicle with alot of cool features you tend to overlook things. I didn't notice the tight driver legroom/fit upon my first test drive, it's not a problem during my daily commute but on a long highway trip it will be. If your over 6'2" in height and over 230Lbs in weight pay attention to this on your test drive.

I can't recommend the SUV enough, it has the total package as far as looks, features, usefulness, and style go. The first year of production 00' had some problems as all first year auto's do so the newer 01' and 02' models have worked out the kinks. I leased mine through Ford so any repairs or defects are covered by them. This is my third Red Carpet Lease and I have never had a problem with any of my Ford vehicles that I leased, however I did own a 93' Ford SHO that was a total piece of crap (Lemon) that I purchased and it was an expensive mistake. It literally started breaking right after the 36K mile warranty was up. If you decide to purchase your ST I would get the extended warranty if you plan on keeping it for a long time simply for piece of mind and to save on expensive repair bills. I'm not knocking Ford, EVERY manufacturer builds lemons but the Japs build ALOT less than Americans.

Go test drive the Sport Trac, you won't be disapointed and you will be hooked, I promise. I looked at mine on a Friday night and bought it on Saturday after one test drive and no intention of buying a car that day or year. For some really good insight check out this website, www.mysporttrac.com they have alot of ST owners there that can answer any questions you have and provide links to ST related stuff.

Versatility, versatility, versatility. That's it. This baby does it _all_ and does it with comfort, style, and fun.

Weakness:

The audiophile sound system needs some work. Bed is just a touch too short for my motorcycles (even with the extender). Engine could use a bit more oomph.

Awesome. Build issuew from the earlier production runs must have settled down, because I have zero problems. This is the best vehicle ever. People say that it's a niche vehicle, well, I'm the niche. I have carried five people in leather comfort (try that in a crew cab) for three hours listening to the in-dash 6CD system with 4 snowboards and a pair of skis up top, and a bed full of snowy, wet dirty crap that I would not have wanted in the back of a regular SUV. Greatest vehicle ever!!! (Until Hummer comes out with their version :-)

A cool pickup with a full cab. Rather versatile. Looks really good (in the darker colors). Good stereo system.

Weakness:

The wheel shakes when parking, and at 80 mph the passanger seat shakes immensley. Lots of wind noise. Needs an optional V8.

I think this is a really cool truck. I'm impressed with the stereo (it came with a 6 disc cd changer), and the leather isn't too shabby. I got the bed extender and the hard tonnue cover so I can fit almost anything into the back. I haven't had lots of the problems that other people have had, but its clearly not made for lots of highway driving (if you have the stereo up and a passenger it stops the shaking chair and drowns out the wind noise). The wheel shakes when parking, i think it's just kickback from the wheels skidding, but not a major problem. It also looks great in black.

Versatility, rear seat room, looks, smooth transmission

Weakness:

Ford Quality is subpar, Gas Mileage,

I would have purchased the Tacoma, but having a 15 month old and another on the way the roominess of the back seat is what really sold me on it. Our baby seats would not fit correctly in the Toyota or Nissan and the F150 Supercrew is too big. The Toyota did not have the rear room I needed.

The versatility of the ST is it's main strength especially if you buy the hard tonneau cover. This allows you to have a dry albeit not waterproof gigantic trunk. I was able to carry 25 bags of mulch by just opening up half of the cover. The rear seats also fold down flat which is a nice feature. The tranny is very smooth, it's a five speed automatic and it shifts as smooth as my wife's Lexus RX300.

If it wasn't for it's subpar quality it would be a real winner. I've been diving foreign cars since my last Ford, a 1994 Explorer. I had many problems with that one and I was expecting better results with this one. There are some factory known problems that Ford has no resolution for yet. One of them is a vibration in the steering wheel especially when turning the wheel while the ST is idleing, it feels like the engine is going to turn off if you don't give it gas. I've had to bring it to the dealer for a ticking sound in the brake pedal when depressing the brake. Feels almost like a loss of vacuum assist, but the pedal never reaches the floor. Braking performance has not been compromised and the dealer says that this is another known problem without resloution. My A/C would cycle on and off every 2-3 seconds and the dealer had to re-program the ECU to get it fixed. The seats are comfortable but the drivers seat has some play in it, I'll live with it until I go back to the dealer. The interior should feel and look less cheap than it does, for 25k it does not rival the Japanese name plates. The Stereo (Single CD player) is marginal at best in sound quality. Gas mileage, it uses regular gas, is mediocre. If you step on it hard don't expect better than 13-14 mpg city, I drive with a softer foot and am averaging 15 to 16 in the city but everyone passes me.

All in all once you come to terms that it is a Ford it's not a bad vehicle. Would I buy another one right now if I had to?

Well.................. probably, but I'd test drive all of the others very thoroughly, not just the Nissan or Toyota

BTW if you want more info go to www.mysporttrac.com, there is a wealth of information there.

Solid and smooth for a 4x4

Weakness:

Lousy MPG, needs more HP/Torque and too much wind noise.

I love it, the motor could use some more HP/Torque and the wind noise is too loud. I bought one fully loaded and feel it was worth the money considering whats on the market today. Now to talk about the limited slip the last person talked about. Not having limited slip has absolutely nothing to do with the front wheels spinning just one wheel or even the back for that matter. Limited slip means just that, when one spins the other one tries to get traction. ALL Sport Trac's have the ability to spin both rear wheels, the rear gear isn't an open rear end and Ford couldn't sell 4x4's if they only spun one front wheel and one back wheel going by his theory. Place a call to Ford's support line and they will back me up on this.

Strength:

Everything. For a teen that runs a lawn business, I find it useful to have the equipment in the back and still enough room in the car for the guys.

Weakness:

The engine is a little week.

Let me give you a little background on me: I am a teenager who runs a professional lawn business with some of my friends. So, I needed a truck that I could use to transport both the lawn equipment, and the guys. That’s why I decided to get the 2001 EXPLOERE SPORT TRAC.
The Explore Sport Trac is one of the most useful SUVs I have ever driven. Let’s start with the front, and work our way back.
The Explorer Sport Trac has a 4.0 SOHC (Single Over Head Cam) V6 engine. It puts out 205 horsepower at 5200 rpms, and 240 lbs. of torque at 3000 rpms. The pickup or acceleration in the Sport Trac is pretty good, for a V6. I myself do not like the SOHC engine because it does not give the car the quickest acceleration. (As compared to my Lincoln Navigator) The Explorer Sport Trac gets its first “kick” at about 2500 rpm’s. For a V6 engine, this is very good. It is capable of going from zero to sixty in about 8.5 seconds. The Explorer Sport Trac engine is equipped with a safety feature called a rev limiter, or govoner limiter. This does several things. The first is that if you put the car in Neutral or Park, and try to rev the engine, the rpm’s will not exceed 3 ½. Next, you will notice that if you excessively “peel out”, or “light it up” (spin your tires) the engine will take so much “heat” from this act, and then shut off. This is what the rev-limiter does. It protects the engine from “blowing”. If the engine gets to hot, it will shut off. The engine will also shut off if you try to “max out” your vehicle. The speedometer goes up to 120 mph, but the engine shuts off at 106 mph.
Next, the Explorer Sport Trac comes standard with a manual transmission, but you can get an automatic. (Like me)
The Explorer Sport Trac has the optional “Premium Sports Group package”. This package consist of: Fog Lights, which come in handy because they greatly improve visibility, Front Tow Hooks, which allow you to help tow out others who might get stuck in the snow, ECT. The package also comes with side step bars, which allow for an easy entry into the truck.
Next, we enter the cabin of the truck. The first option you will have is: Do you want the cloth or leather seats. I choose leather, and I do not regret it. It is really comfortable. There are two main groups for choosing your seating surface: Cloth Comfort Group, or Leather Comfort group. No matter what you choose, both groups give you the selected seats with an Adjustable Head Restraint, 6-Way Power Driver's Seat, Floor Console with Rear Climate and Audio Controls, and an Overhead Console with Outside Temperature Gauge and Compass.
Next, we have the convince group. This group gives you the option of:
Autolock / Relock, (Available with Automatic Transmission Only) Leather-Wrapped Tilt Steering Wheel, a Remote Keyless Entry System with Keypad and Speed Control. These options are very useful, and come in handy. I decided to get this on my truck, and it makes it easy to hop in and out because you never have to put the key in the door, turn it, open the door, and pull the key out. All you have to do is click a button and hop in.
Next, we come to the drive and the axle. The Explorer Sport Trac comes standard with 4X2, and a 4.10 axle ratio. You can upgrade this to a 4X4 drive and a 4.10 limited slip axle if you desire. What the difference is, is that if you get 4X2, only two tires will spin from the axle, but if you get the 4X4 package, then all four tires will spin, thus giving your vehicle better handling in the snow, ect. Next, we have the option of a 4.10 axle or a 4.10 limited slip axle. The main difference between the two of them is that if you get the regular 4.10 axle, (and if you get stuck) the only one tire is going to spin. – If you have it in 2 wheel drive, or you have a 4X2. But if you get a limited slip axle, the you will have true two-wheel drive. – As in both tires will equally spin as hard. This is true for 4X4 also. If you get a 4X4 Sport Trac with a regular 4.10 axle, (and have it in 4X4) then only one front and one rear tire will spin. But with the limited slip, you will have all four tires spinning equally as hard. On mine, I got both the 4X4 and the limited slip, and I have never gotten stuck, or had any problems.
The next main option is the sound system. The Explorer Sport Trac has the optional Six-speaker Pioneer sound system. This comes with a built into the dash six disk CD player. This is a nice system. It is loud inside the car, but it can not be heard outside of the car. This is because this car floor is made of rubber instead of carpet. However, it does have really sharp floor mats over the rubber. The rubber flooring helps to absorb the sound, and keep it contained inside the car. The rubber flooring also makes it easy to clean the car. All you have to do is take a hose, and blast the junk out.
Moving back more, the Explorer Sport Trac has a very roomy back seat. It also has power doors, mirrors, and windows. The rear window can be opened about 1 ½ inch, or it can be lowered all the way down via a knob that you either push or turn. (Push to vent, turn to open). This wold is useful for large objects that can not fit inside the cabin.
Moving onto the bed of the truck, you will find a 12-volt power outlet built into the standardly lined bed. This is convenient because you can plug almost anything into it.
The Explorer Sport Trac has two options with the Bed of the truck. You can get a Two-Piece, Foldable, Lockable Hard Tonneau Cover, and / or a Cargo Cage. The cover is useful because it protects whatever it is inside of the bed from theft, and weather. The Cargo Cage is useful because it extends the bed outward more, so you can fit more stuff inside of it.
In conclusion, I think that the Explorer Sport Trac is a very useful SUV. It is roomy, yet it is capable of carrying things you can not put inside of a regular car / suv. (Like a lawnmower for a lawn business).

I think that the Explorer Sport Trac is similar to the F-150 Super Crew. This is also a nice car, but it is a little too big, and expensive for a teen who is running a lawn business

Strength:

Very versatile, offers the best of both worlds. Luxury and the ability to still be able to be a work truck.

Weakness:

I have 10,000 on this thing and the rotors were shot. The sun roof wouldn't shut properly. The standard tires are also a joke.

For what I spent for this I should not be having problems this early, it only makes me wonder what is next to come. If I had done it over again I would have bought the 2001 Double Cab Tacoma. I have driven nothing but foreign cars in the past and I was used to their reliability and durability. I guess it is my fault for coming back to the Good Ol' US of A. The Ford service people were not a pleasant experience to have to work with either. I guess mabye I got a bad one of the bunch and you will have better luck, but why take chances, buy foreign.

4 stars / I love my Trac and have a lot of fun driving it. Over here in Germany I get a lot of looks and a lot of thumbs ups. The best is to let all the windows down, to include the rear one and let breeze blow thru. I am 6'2" tall and I have enough room for my legs. There are some improvement that can be made on the up coming models.
