Model Reviewed: Ford Ranger XLT 4x4

Strength:

Looks, interior, great in snow and mud. Climbs hills well. Very good lease promotions, yes this is a lease vehicle.

Weakness:

Weak motor, knocking and pinging in the motor, driver side power window shuffles when going down. Wipers occassionally will turn on. Firestone tires, horrible on gas mileage for a small engine & truck. Very pricey for a small truck. Play in the driveshaft. Worst of all is Ford customer service. Poor fit and finish on the passenger side doors.

It's a nice looking truck. Fun to drive around in all seasons, winter, mud, summer, etc... It's a small truck so don't expect big things; however, it's an accumulation of problems that makes me never want to buy this vehicle and makes me recommend the same to others. Good thing it's a lease otherwise I'd be flaming by now with all the crap this truck has given me. It has gotten me from point A to point B, but along the route I've experienced a severe knocking/pinging in the motor, play in the driveshaft, a unpredictable wiper problem (yes I know it's a recall problem, another inconvenience) shuffling driver side window and 2nd recall on the water pump, which took the Ford dealership 4 fricken days to fix.

I can live with the problems IF the dealership I purchased it from would just get my damn vehicle finished when they said they would. Every Ford dealership, but one (unfortunately I don't live near this one) have given me very poor service and has NEVER finished my vehicle on the day they said it would be. Lastly, being an engineer for a company who supplies Ford parts, I know the Ford philosophy of how they engineer their vehicles and let me tell you, it would make you think twice about purchasing another, ....... that's why I won't, and I get A-Plan price too. I give it 3 stars, but since their customer service is one of the worst of all auto companies I can only give it 2. If you're going to lease then I'd say it's ok, but I recommend not to purchase one. This is my experience and it is very similar to other people I've talked to (customer service more so). Good luck car/truck shopping.

Strength:

Looks sharp. nice interior space. ergonomical. 4x4 is nice and there when you need it.

Weakness:

4.0 litre engine. (as factory produced) sucks. In Michigan, known as "Ford explosions). The heads are milled too thin. Crack. Upper engine knocks and pings excessivly. Blown engine after 79000miles of common usage.replaced at a cost of 2100.oo dollers.
front brakes are a constant problem. uneven wear continues after complete ASE rebuild. AC pump siezed.
Transmission OD failed at 80,000 miles. 81000miles, tranny loosens up and it refuses to grasp tight on deceleration. new rear diferential cover.
Very loose.

Initial cost+rebuilt engine(4.0)+all around brake job to include discs, drums, calipers, two hoses, shoes.+ACpump+diff cover... TO FINISH IT OFF.. IT HAS THE RECALLED FIRESTONE ATX TIRES ALL AROUND TO INCLUDE THE BLOWN SPARE...
Common sense might preveil here..
Has anyone had these problems with the 90fd ranger xlt supercab 4x4?

It is a fun little truck that looks nice though.

Model Reviewed: Ranger Std Cab, SWB, 4x2, 2.5L I-4

Strength:

Dependable and tough little truck. Ride is okay, will be much better after ditching OEM shocks. It was equipped with Firestone Wilderness tires, not any more. After upgrading to 235 73 15's, the trucks ride and traction is great. The little 2.5L has plenty of power for everday use. Automatic tranny coupled with a 4.10 LS rear end works nicely together. Overall a good buy.

Weakness:

Firestone Tires
OEM shocks
Gas mileage (18 city, 23 highway), I expected more with the 4 banger, but I am guessing the automatic tranny and 4.10 rear take its toll.

11,000 with 20k on it. Bought 100k extended warranty (looked under the hood and saw more wires than engine). I now have 28,000 and have had very good luck with it. Had to take it in for a broken heating control knob, but so far that is it. MPG is a little low 18/23 highway/city, but equipped with automatic and 4.10 rear.

After upgrading tires from 225/70/15 to 235/75/15 traction was much improved.

Overall a very good little truck. Does all I ever ask it to.

Strength:

just a all around good truck. I like the looks, and with the 4.0 and 5sp it is not a log, or (rock)
I don't think of it as a truck, it is my every day go every where car.
it gets about 24 miles/gall. for a truck that is very good.

Weakness:

it has 150K miles on it

very much so, I think that every one should have a ranger. also, value wise, it would make a good truck for any family, or a car for a teen.

Strength:

Looks good. Hauls heavy items well. Has a quiet engine. Comfortable to drive.

Weakness:

Winter driving is difficult, back end is all over the road usless you have weight in it. Unable to make sharp turns. Wished I'd bought an extended cab - not enough room for seating.

I paid 17,000 which I think is too much for what it is but the looks I guess make up for it. It's very sporty looking and that's what I wanted in a truck. I would recommend a Ford truck but be sure to get the extended cab!

Strength:

Reliability. Bought a new 89 Ranger 2.4 liter, 185,000 miles and ran like new with not one engine or drivetrain problem. Bought my 94 with 4 liter V6 new, 140,000 miles and same situation. The engine and transmission have never been touched.

Weakness:

Rangers have no weakness, except possibly not quite as much HP as some others

Would recommend a Ranger to anyone interested in a small pickup. Have pulled my boat with both Rangers on extended trips of 3,000 miles each way several times. Have seen the aftermath of Rangers in crashes versus the aftermath of the S-10 and S-15. The Ranger owners were lucky they drove FORDS. At 105,000 gave it first tuneup, at 140,000 only second set of brakes, first replacement of any hose and belt. Other than that, neither Ranger cost me one red cent except for regular maintenence. At 140,000 my 94 will out perform a new S-10 or S-15 and it will never smoke like a Dodge!!!!!

Overall apperance is very nice for a truck that is 5 yrs old.

Weakness:

the motor went out around 60k ( alittle over a month ago) and I am still waiting on the replacement. The up side is that even though I bought this used the local dealer is replacing the motor under the drive train warrenty, with a year left when I get the motor in. ANd I am only paying $500 of the $3700 of the motor.

I like it other that the problem listed above.

Model Reviewed: Ford Ranger Supercab V6

Strength:

Overall Ride quality, comfortable (optional) sport bucket seats. 4l V6 is
adequate with auto trans. AT shifts very smoothly. Has been fairly reliable. Enjoy high riding possible. Great for towing with the limited slip and high performance differential

Weakness:

Lots of brake work, need to stay on front alignment. Wind noise at freeway
speed, engine loud at acceleration. Needs seperate on/off switch for AC and
map lights.

I paid 18500, about $2100 off sticker after a 3 hour battle at the dealership. I will use the internet next time to purchase. I am planning to buy a 2002 Ranger when it gets a major redesign. Glad they made the switch to independent front suspention and putting in the 4L SOHC engine from the Explorer in new Rangers. I love all the options, especially the remote entry, power windows, locks etc. The sport bucket seats in my 96 are
the most comfortable truck seats I have ever had. I hope Ford stays with this style as an option. I don't care for the 60/40. I have considered a Dodge Dakota but am usnsure about reliability. I feel very comfortable buying another Ranger. I use mine for business and would highly reccomend
this truck for any utility purpose.

Model Reviewed: 4X4 Offroad - single cab flare side

Strength:

It's a surprisingly tough truck for it's size. The 4X4 offroad suspension is really incredable. I load trucks all day and I've loaded more into it that a lot of full sized trucks can handle. I also put flowmasters on it and it sounds and runs out great.

Weakness:

The top speed isn't so great. I wouldn't plan on traveling at over 70 for long periods of time - it sits up around 3,000 a little before 80.

The 3.0 V6 is a strong and extremely dependable engine. But 20 grand is a nice chunk of change so
