Ranger XLT 4x4 Super Cab
Strength:
Great handling for a truck, fun to drive, looks great, 4.0 has plenty power but low gas milege, 3.0 is a little slow but gets better gas milege, 4 doors are a God send, price was ok
Weakness:
speakers blow out way to easily I had to replace them twice in the first year (covered by warenty), again 3.0lt could use a little more beef I would highly recommend the Ranger to anyone looking for a midsize pickup and smart enough not to pay the same price as a full size pickup (Dakota V8) or submit themselves to the embarasment of driving a Chevy. Super Cab Flareside
Strength:
I have not had any problems with this truck so far. It looks good, handles pretty well and the price is probably the best value in compact pickups.
Weakness:
I have the 3.0 V-6 and while it provides decent power the acceleration w/ 3.73 rear end and auto. trans. is not great, especially in the 2k-4k rpm range. I would have to say that when I bought the truck the main factor was price. For what I paid I could only get a standard cab Dakota with the V-6 which was much less truck for the money. Besides I have always been a Ford man, and probably always will be. Similar Products Used: I would have bought a Dakota at first but they were asking way!!! too much. No rebates, no financing etc. This was back in Jan. 1998 thought so that may be different now. Still, I am glad I went with the Ranger. |

Strength:
Great truck. Looks good. Runs good. Rides good. Love having four doors. The 4 wheel drive on the fly system is impressive as well. Lots more affordable than a tacoma.
Weakness:
Brakes squeak. Needs the 4.0 SOHC engine option. all and all a great truck. have 30,000m on it and no problems yet hope it stays that way. The women also like the 4x4 trucks. I just glad to get out of that stinking S 10 piece of crap. P.S. FORD KICKS A**!!!!!!!!!!!! Similar Products Used: S-10PU |

Weakness:
noisy on the highway, stereo system could be better I love the truck, I got it for 14 grand and I would recommend it to anyone that doesn't want to pay the price of the F-series. Similar Products Used: 1995 S-10, 1990 Ranger |

Ranger XLT
Strength:
4.0 has plenty of power.
Weakness:
Paint is peeling. Brakes have been replaced many times. Windows chatter going down. Seats are uncomfortable. Dome light switch sticks. Idle sticks at 3000rpm. Rear end went out at 50,000. Transmission went out at 60,000. Shock mount on radius arm was poorly welded and broke off. I bought an entire fleet of rangers for work and they all have these same problems. Thank God for warranty. Getting the dealer to warranty them is another story. The Ranger seems to have the same problems year after year. If Ford would address these problems it would be a very good truck. The brakes need increased in size. The window motor and runners need upgraded. The dome light switch needs removed from it's present location, it gets full of dirt and sticks. They're a good truck for the price but Ford could make that value much better. Similar Products Used: S-10, Toyota |

Strength:
Rock solid little truck. Great value for price paid.
Weakness:
2.3L is slightly weak on highway. Clutch pedal sweaks when depressed. (minor) I bought my Ranger 4x2 new in Sept 97 for $12,000 and have had no problems with it after 40K miles. The 2.3L engine performace is average but durability is proven!!(have seen the 2.3 in Rangers with over 250K miles and still running strong!) They used a cast aluminum oil pan dual ignitions and other components showing higher quality than the competitors. The 97 Ranger is a strong reliable little truck that is inexpensive to buy and own. The Rangers also hold their value very well. I recommed it to anyone who wants an inexpensive rock solid little truck! Similar Products Used: Jap. trucks, S-10 |

FUEL MILEAGE? MY REVIEW IS FOR BOTH A 93 AND 98 MODELS COMBINED. OTHER THAN MAINTENANCE AND ONE WIRING REPAIR ON THE 93 THAT I DID MYSELF I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH EITHER VEHICLE. OVERALL THERE IS NOT A BETTER SMALL PICKUP 2WD OR 4WD ON THE MARKET. I AM IN THE AUTOMOTIVE FIELD AND I BASED MY PURCHASES ON VEHICLES THAT I SEE LOW REPAIR VOLUME ON EXCLUDING MAINTENANCE. USUALLY WHAT CONSUMER REPORTS MAGAZINE SAYS ON A VEHICLE IS PRETTY MUCH CORRECT AND THEY RATE THIS #1 ON SMALL PICKUPS AND I AGREE 100 PERCENT. |

Strength:
Good looks, assembly seems to be quality work. Gas mileage is better than expected with 4 cylinder (25 mpg).
Weakness:
Engine buzzes at freeway speed, and ride is a bit jittery when the bed is empty. Paid $9995 new for this as a beater truck for around town commuting. For the money it is a great value in my opinion, good mileage and the versatility of a truck can not be underestimated. I did a lot of searching before buying and as far as base models go I feel it offered more than the others, the safety and crash ratings were impressive as well. xl supercab 4x4
Strength:
Excellent build quality, extremely reliable, good stick shift, hasn't broke down once, good gas mileage (3.o liter engine), handles extremely well-drives like a TRUCK!
Weakness:
3.o liter engine could be stronger, factory shocks are useless-replaced with Pro Comp Off Road Shocks after 5000 miles of bouncing up and down. Now ride is great! OEM tires offer zero traction in any weather. Replaced with $16,000 new. Highly recommend it for light hauling and every day commuting too. Similar Products Used: none |
