tacoma x cab 4x4
Strength:
power is good & interior features are nice
Weakness:
The rear springs are weak. Don't ever expect to put tools or equipment in the bed & expect it to drive right. This is my 3rd Toyota 4x4 & is by far the worst. It is great from the cab foward, but the rear springs stink. I felt like I got good service from my dealer but the quality of the springs is poor. The truck rocks side to side going down the interstate like a boat in the middle of the lake. The other 2 toyotas were twice the truck this one is as far as suspension. I'm going to have to spend $500.00 dollars to try & fix the problem by getting additional leafs added. I have always been proud to own a toyota until now. The lst pickup had 200,000 miles & the 2nd 325,000 without a problem. I still own the 2nd pickup. Similar Products Used: 1988 toyota 4x4 and 1993 toyota 4x4 |

Strength:
Great truck, powerfull 2.7 liter engine. Looks like a 4x4, but isn't.
Weakness:
Bumpy ride and terrible gas milage, expected to get 20mpg around town only get 16mpg and 20mpg on long trips. Best truck I have ever had. If had another chance I would probably get the V6. Similar Products Used: Nissan and Ford |

Strength:
Build quality is superb. Solid and rattle free after over 50K miles. Paint is excellent. Smooth engine and great ride on the freeway for a truck that is also off-road capable. It's hard to think of all of this truck's strengths.
Weakness:
Seeing so many others on the road. With a little customizing though I was able to get that individual feeling I was after. I can't imagine owning anything but the Toyota now. I'm not as fond of the look of the new ones but I remember feeling the same way about the Tacoma when they came out. Similar Products Used: I've owned Chevy, Ford and Dodge. While there were things I liked about each, the Tacoma is clearly of better quality. |

*Milk Toast Stereo - C'mon Toyota - I'm an AMERICAN and I want my stereo to blow my stinkin' head off!!! This truck just plain ROCKS! I am 42 years old and I drive in Texas in the 108 degree, 65% humidity summers and the 25 degree, black ice winters and this truck hasn't let me down once. It has 138,467 miles on it right now and it looks brand new because I take care of my stuff. I have done nothing to it, but change the oil with Castrol GTX 10W30, keep clean filters in it, polish it twice a year, burn mid grade fuel. It has the original belts and hoses - thats amazing (I guess I should change them, but I keep a good coat of Amorall on them and they're solid). Similar Products Used: I bought a 1982 Datsun P/U in August 1982 for $4100 and drove it till June 1995 when I bought my Tacoma. I put 186,00 on The Mighty Datsun and sold it for $2100. It was a good truck. Too bad they don't make Datsun's anymore. |

Tacoma TRD Limited X-cab
Strength:
Engine: V-6 is smooth and powerful
Weakness:
The clutch pedal travel seems way to long on the 5 spd. manual trans. And I get a slight vibration under heavy acceleration. I think everyone agrees that the clock is in a bad locale and the premium sound needs help. I also find that the box seems to be shallow as compared to similar trucks. And yes, I too have the passenger side airbag rattle. You won't find me at any of the big three's showrooms again! UAW can keep it's junk. I think people are starting to realize that it's not normal to have to take your vehicle in for warranty work every month. Let the numbers speak for themselves. Toyota trucks go farther with a lot fewer problems. Similar Products Used: 89 Ford F-150: Good truck but underpowered with 300 I-6 |

I have put 22,000 miles in less than a year and I have had little problems. The ride is great, I drive to Vegas about twice a month and don't need to worry about breaking down...ever!!!!!!
Weakness:
I had some dash rattle, took it to another dealership, they did nothing except "yes" me to death. The other dealership also screwed my brakes up, the started stuttering when I would come to a stop. I took it back to the dealership where I bought the car and they fixed the dash problem but the brakes are still giving me problems. They told me that they are now going to replace the front rotors...we'll see if that fixes the problem I'm giving it 4 stars accross the board because of the inconvenience of having to be without my car. I use my car for work and NEED to have my car in tip top shape. Similar Products Used: 1992 Ford Ranger |

Back seat good for storage and thats it.Passenger area needs to be inlarged. Little bit high on the cash side. Need to know if the 4 door will come in a stick, the auto's are way to slow and the (ETC button sucks) I am the toughest person alive to drive any vehicle. I have owned ford, chevy, dodge,gm. With in the first 3 months of owning my (TOY) I had it in the mud to where it was coming into the interior and my brother screaming next to me. I had only replaced the tires at 45,000 miles because the ones that come with the truck are to soft. Brakes after 1 1/2 years.let me tellyou I do alot of driving on and off road. When I sold the vechicle with 168,000 miles the clutch was still going strong. My friends and relatives could not believe that a truck could hold up to the way I am on any vechicle. Strength:
Fit and finish, quiet and solid. Though it's only a week old, I get a sense it'll last a long, long time. Coming from a sports car background, I just couldn't jump straight into a utility-type vehicle - without adding the supercharger. It really moves the torque curve up everywhere. There is no sense of anything "spooling up", like a turbocharger or cam, just a strong pull from any rpm. Very nice as it removes some of the "I'm-in-a-truck-so-I'll-just-stay-in-the-slow-lane" syndrome.
Weakness:
No problem with the truck, but dealerships/salesmen, aaaa! It's hard not to stereotype them as being the same everywhere, regardless of brand, as being lazy, unknowledgeable, and "weasels." Actually taking delivery of the truck sucked a lot of the fun out of what should have been a fun exciting experience. This may be problematic with any "popular" brand vehicle - the dealerships just don't have to try very hard; if you don't buy it, someone else will in 10 minutes. Though you can "build your own" on Toyota's website, don't expect to actually find one unless you order it from the factory (I never did see a Tacoma with ABS.) Ordering what you want takes 90-120 days and you'll pay MSRP. The alternative is accepting what they have in stock, and we went round and round negotiating options, "if you want this, you have to give up that." You end up with something other then what you wanted. After compromising, the salesman was to search for our truck, yet after two weeks he still hadn't found one (or wasn't looking,) and never called. I had to keep inquiring to make sure our order hadn't fallen behind the file cabinet. I ended up going to the Sales Manager, and in one hour we had done what the salesman hadn't accomplished in two weeks. Moral of the story: expect to baby-sit your sales person. This is my first Toyota and my first new import for that matter. Had lots of old Nissan/Datsuns, plus an 89 Mustang and 95 Z28. Coming from a Z28, it'll take a while to adjust. As it's the Prerunner, there's a sense of driving up in the trees - I fear tipping over. The lifted body is great for visibility, bad for handling and mileage. For a 4x4, the body lift is a must, but for driving on the street, the pseudo-off-road look is a bit much - all of the disadvantages of a 4x4 and none the benefits. I chose the PreRunner because it was the only way I could get a 6-cylinder automatic in a Tacoma(!) - wish I could understand Toyota's logic on that. Similar Products Used: 1990 Nissan Hardbody pick-up. 2.4L, 5-sp, manual steering. A very faithful reliable third vehicle. As far as comparing it to a brand new PreRunner... it's isn't quite fair, as they aren't really in the same ballpark. |

Strength:
Very reliable and very tough. You can abuse this truck and it won't let you down. Under the hood it is open and organized. Will be easy to work on once it breaks down, if it ever does.
Weakness:
Fuel economy is a little less than I had hoped. The paint dulled quickly. Bench seat is not comfortable on long drives. I would recomend this truck to anyone who wants rugged dependability out of a small pickup. The only work done to this truck in 80,000 miles is the regular maintenance. It has never failed to start. Bucket seats are more comfortable. Similar Products Used: This truck will be on the road when the rangers and s-10's are in the junkyard. Nissan's are almost as good. |
