Strength:

Awesome truck. The TRD suspension much better than stock Tacoma.

Weakness:

No Clock. Had rattle in dash at 3500 miles. After 3 visits to dealer, it's fixed.

This is a great truck. The V6 while not a 4cyl in its gas consumption is reasonable. The TRD suspension package offers a ride that sometimes seems too stiff, while other times, particularly in the turns seems like a dream. I really decided on this Tacoma because it was the perfect size. Also, it has the best leg room in its class and more leg room than some larger trucks. And I've previously owned 2 Toyota cars which never had any problems. I did have an aggravating rattle but the dealer fixed it. The fit and finish is excellent. I love it. I'm giving it 4 stars in the value rating, because the truck was pricey. Of course, it's loaded: Auto, alarm, pwr win & locks, CD/Cass/AMFM, sunroof, BUT they wanted $100 extra for a digital clock.

Strength:

Looks great, tough.
V6 is powerful, plenty of tourque.
Handles great for a truck.
Offroading is excellent.
Toyotas are notorious for longevity....Had an '89 previously, just wouldn't quit. 200k on the original clutch, factory alternator.

Weakness:

NO CLOCK!!!!!

A bit pricey compared to a Ranger or S10, but you get what you pay for. Toyotas will outlast and out perform any of the compacts in it's class. Nissan's can't even compare, and the Dakota was a joke.

My dad had a Ranger, and my sister had an S10. Both in the shop all the time, engines were powerless, even with the Vortec V6 in the Chevy. Horrendous trucks. I will always buy Toyota products because of my 1989 4X4. I put it through hell and just kept coming back. I can't say enough about Toyota products. AND NO SQUEAKS IN MINE!!!

Strength:

Great power, solid feel, ride height, and high resale value.

Weakness:

Vibration at 65+ mph even after wheel balance, clunking of trans after coming to stop, (others have noted this also). Pulsating brakes, rotors need resurfaced.

First truck, always wanted a toyota truck. This one has high miles for 1997 (87,000) but it allowed me to afford the truck I wanted. Need to get the vibrations fixed and then I'll be completely happy.

Model Reviewed: 4X4 TRD SR5 Ext. Cab Tacoma V6

Strength:

Strong build. Great looks! Love the V6...plenty of power! Toyota longivity and reputation that is the foundation of Toyota. Very heavy-duty frame and undercarriage. 31 X 10.50 -15 tires and wheels look great, and the v6 pulls them fine. Great heater and A/C.

Weakness:

First af all, don't get me wrong...I like this truck. Why can't EVERY vehicle come standard with a clock? (NO clock) The bed is very shallow in comparison to other trucks. Rear seats are for very small childern and groceries...no adults! Mysterious noises in the dash area that seem to be very intermitten and random. Squeeks and rattles in the dash are unacceptable at only 2500 miles!!! I am a rattle freak, and this just drives me mad. (Please feel free to email me if anyone out there has solutions of ideas for me)

Really like the truck...the look, the power. However, when rattles and unknown noises begin to come from the dash area at 2,500 miles, I begin to wonder what will it sound like at 25,000 or 50,000 miles????? I have tinted the windows, added some nerf bars (Westin). I am a die-hard Honda man, I have many Honda's (pump, generator, autos, mowers, motorcycles, atv's) I do not feel the fit and finish is up to the standard of most Honda products, on the other hand, I realize this is a truck. if Honda offered a pickup truck, I would own one.

Strength:

The truck is built right. Everything works and it hasn't been back to the dealership once. It looks great and probably will for a long time. I won't be having any paint peeling or fading problems.

Weakness:

That I see a lot of others on the road. I had to customize it to keep from looking like I was just part of the herd.

For this size of truck you can't beat Toyota. I can't see any reason to buy something else unless you plan to tow a huge fifth wheel around. Even then I'd just invest in a supercharger for the Toyota.

Strength:

- Dependability
- Style
- Ruggedness
- Height

Weakness:

- Seats could be more comfortable
- Outside mirrors are easy to bump out of alignment
- Stock tires are junk

I've had this truck since April 1999 and it's my first truck and my second Toyota (sold a '85 Celica to buy the Tacoma). I wanted something that would be comfortable for commuting to/from work, and also be a "utility" vehicle with cargo space for trips to the lumber yard, camping, etc. Toyota has a reputation for quality, shown by the higher resale values, which is important to me. We have a '92 Explorer that has been nothing bu problems since we bought it -- replaced the engine (twice!), rebuilt the manual tranny after 60K miles, A/C compressor replaced, seals, ujoints, ball joints, you name it.

Anyhow, this Tacoma is an excellent truck when compared to other brands. Fit and finish is great quality, interior is well laid out, no rattles, vibrations, etc. The only problem I had after buying it was a LOT of road noise from the tires. It sounded like they were unbalanced, and I returned it to the dealer three times for balancing. Then, I received a "customer feedback" card from Toyota and I wrote that the truck was great, except the dealer could not fix the tire/noise problem. The next week, the dealer called and said "We're going to give you a new set of tires. You pick the brand and we'll install 5 of them." Woohoo! I picked Michelin LTX's and the difference was phenomenal: smooth and quiet!

I am also now in the process of upgrading the sound system. Being a musician, I am picky about music quality and the factory system just wasn't sounding like my home stereo. So I bought a Rockford Fosgate Punch 250 amp and a pair of JL Audio VR600-ES component speakers to replace the front pair. Another Tacoma owner had installed this combination with the factory head unit and says it sounds awesome. We shall see! It looks like the cost will be about $550.

My only beef about this truck was that I could not get electronic adjustable outside mirrors and a factory sunroof. I ordered this truck from the factory with all of the options I wanted, except these two. The mirrors were not available except for on the Limited version, and they just would not install the sunroof for me at the fatory. I bought an aftermarket sunroof and had it installed for about $250. In hindsight, I should have bought the Toyota sunroof as a separate part and had it installed locally; it looks like it's better quality.

Also, another thing that I didn't know until I got it was that there is a spot on the bumper for a ball hitch. I had ordered a Class 3 hitch from the factory, which will tow more weight, but the bumper hitch would have worked for me and would have saved me $300.

If you are looking for durability, dependability, quality, and style, look no further than Toyota trucks!

I would recomend this exceptional Toyota product for what your imagination allows you to do with it Toyota provides the shell and two excellent power plants 2.4 I4 16v rated @ 142 hp a torqey 2.7 version of the base unit and a ground pounding 3.4L V6 that can be fitted w/TRD supercharger which i wish i saved my money for and fitted to a 2wd V6 5-speed i new a guy ordered a stepside Tacoma 2000 like that lowered it on 18"s and he swore it ran a 14.2 1/4 mi ??? if your not into a modified truck it also fits rather nicely as a very dependable daily driver for one whom expects class leading returns on there investment and upmost reliability the Tacoma is the only way to go. please send me an e-mail if you want to know of any other performance products for this awesome vehicle or just want info .

PARTS SUCH AS LIFTS AND OTHER PARTS ARE EXPENSIVE. FOR A 4 INCH LIFT IT COSTS 1,400 DOLLARS.

Model Reviewed: 4x4 V6 Double Cab Limited TRD

Strength:

Best looking pickup truck on the market by far, very solid feel and ride, Toyota quality. Plenty of room with new Double Cab configuration. Larger bed than most competitors.

Weakness:

I don't really care for the bright orange dash lighting - not easy on the eyes. Poor placement of the clock. I don't know why they don't put larger gas tanks in these things (18.5 gal is too small).

We needed to get a 4-door vehicle since our family is growing from 2 to 3 soon. As soon as I found out that the 2001 Tacoma would be offered in a 4-door version, there was no other choice.
The Tacoma's great looks and "solidness" make it a no-brainer when choosing a new truck.
Improvements over my '98 include better cup holders, more console storage, and smoother ride (the double cab body style may have affected this, I don't know).
The V6 has plenty of power both on road and off. Unfortunately, the double cab is not available with a manual transmission.
The available Limited package is a big step up from my '98's SR5 package, giving it most of the luxury items one might expect on a more expensive SUV.
Rear visibility is better with the double cab, and the larger side mirrors are also a big help.
The Tacoma is not cheap, but this is one purchase where you certainly get what you pay for.

Strength:

Perfect for me

Weakness:

expensive clutch. Mentally and physically challenged mechanics at Boston Post (Westchester NY) Toyota dealership

Firstly, this is for the 3.4L V-6 in a T100. I actually had a problem with the TRD supercharger and had to have it removed. I got my money back from toyota while in CA. I was not happy with it anyway. It was thrashy and noisy and not in a good way. The power delivery was not very smooth, and it did not move my T100 the way I thought it should. I feel the 3.4L is much nicer with simple air breathing mods (exhaust, throttle body, etc)than the supercharger. If you really need the power get the V8--without a 5sp option :-( Does well in NY winters, stored for 2 months (without battery)and it fired up perfectly. hope it prves to be as reliable as my other toyotas... 163,000 (celica) and 150,000 (truck).
