Toyota Tundra Trucks | Vans

Toyota Tundra Trucks | Vans

DESCRIPTION

Available in Regular cab, Double Cab and CrewMax styles, the Tundra also features three bed lengths, three engines, three wheelbases and a choice of 4X2 or 4X4 configurations.

The Tundra offers three engines and three cab sizes. Handling is relatively responsive, but the ride with the TRD package is stiff. The 5.7-liter V8 is very powerful. The tailgate is easy to raise and lower. A new 4.6-liter V8 replaced the old 4.7-liter for 2010.

Strength:

Runs well, pulls the boat good, easy to service.

Weakness:

Toyota's support of the poorly designed oxygen sensor. The safety belt does not retreive and frequently gets cought in the door.

I have used the Tundra to pull a 7500 lb boat frequently and haul garden supplies and construction supplies. The truck has served me well. I have had to replace both back oxygen sensors, Toyota paid, and the passenger side front oxygen sensor, Toyota did not pay. The front sensor had a circuit failure caused by the wire being too short. The replacement, causting $120, had the same length wire. The driver side did not have the problem because it was much to short and the plug on the engine was not mounted. I also had problems with the front breaks.

Love the truck. Have no problems with it with exception of below. Has been a great vehicle and would not hesitate to get another one.

Strength:

Quality, ride, appearance, cab room, resale value.

Weakness:

Only short box available with double cab and no diesel option. Braking okay but would likely be better with 4 wheel disc.

Almost didn't buy my Tundra based on the negative reviews on this site but after test driving and grilling the salesperson at the dealership I went ahead and bought it anyway. And I'm glad I did. I have nearly 90,000 km (55,000 mi) on the truck, 6000 of them towing a beast of a tent trailer to Cape Breton and back (mountains, twists and turns) and the rest driving way too fast with way too much trailer and box weight (on occasion). I am still on the original brakes and have only seen the inside of the dealership for a blown tire replacement. The ride and handling are amazing, gas mileage okay for a V8 (about 20 mpg hwy), tons of room in the back seats of the double cab and everyone comments how good it looks. The only negatives so far is I'd like more low-end power and the locking differential kicks in at low speeds while in 4wd high creating some issues when turning on slippery cottage roads.

A great looking truck with power and comfort. Unfortunately the brake problems make it unsafe to drive. The rears don't work causing the front rotors to warp. Toyota replaced the entire system once and now denies there is a problem. I almost drove off the side of a mountain in the rain when the front brakes locked up. It now sits in the garage. My first Toyota lemon.

Quality and Reliabilty

Bought the Tundra a few days ago becasue I heard so much about their quality and reliabilty. When I needed the 4wd it wouldn't work. Took it back to the dealer and they said the front wheel device to engage the wheels was installed improperly from the factory and was damaged. It also burned out the electronic control unit. I'm hoping the next 200 miles of this vehicle are more reliable. I've dealt with 14 new vehicles over the years and the quality and reliabilty of this vehicle appear to be lowest of them all.

Strength:

Quiet, smooth ride. Slightly smaller footprint and height than other "full size" trucks, so easier to park, etc. Maybe the suspension is a little soft but maybe if you got the towing package it would be stiffer. The engine is amazing - after 77K miles the oil is still clear. Never seen that before (but maybe all newer cars are like that now - I always had pretty old cars before this one).

Weakness:

I think the brake system is defective. The rotors start to warp after only a few hard brakings and then it shudders when braking. I had the rotors replaced (under warranty) at 25K miles, and have had them turned at 40K, 55K and now again at 77K. this is the only bad thing I have had on this truck- but it's a doozy and I may not buy a Toyota again due to Toyota's insistance that this is not a defect. I think they are lying on this one. If it weren't for the brake problem I would say this is a perfect truck.

The Toyota Tundra 2001 is a nice truck. Rides great, very quiet ride too. I use it to commute, haul "weekend warrior" stuff like loads of lumber and dirt (handles 2 yards), yard waste to the dump, dogs etc. I really like it.

quality, quality, quality....I use my truck for outside sales..I have put 37000 miles on it in 7 months, and had loads as high as 2800 pounds in the bed (electric motor), and the only concern was the capacity of the tires 9 I have since changed to a "legitimate" truck tire. I also occasionaly pull a 16' enclosed trailer with the truck and have had zero problems towing. Now, of course, I do not drag race from a stoplight nor do I drive with my foot on the floor. But this is the 6th toyota I have owned and it will not be the last. I am getting actual mileage in the 18-19 range around town, and when I am on the interstate, with the cruise set at the speed limit will net me a best of 20.7 mpg.

Weakness:

I would make a positive traction rearend standard.
The pickup bed has tie down hooks in each corner; two more at the mid point of the bed would make it more practical for tying down smailler loads

after reading some of the reviews on the web about the tundra, I cannot emphasize enough the quality of the vehicle; I have been in manufacturing for almost 30 years and are familiar, at length with the toyota quality control and dna in manufacturing. While some have had complaints on brakes, o2 sensors, and misc. there are too many unknown variables involved, just point the finger directly at toyota. I have been in this field for years (not for toyota) and the consumer must realize that, all things being equal, and being honest, there are too may consumer related issues to take to task. Do I like my truck?? Absolutley. Have I had any problems?? Sure, but only minor issues, that when analyzed, can be traced to individual and particular circumstances. Example, I have a friend who has a new dodge ram (also a good truck) and complains that the brakes on it fade badly, and do not last; he is also complaining that his gas mileage is poor......but he commutes on the interstate to work, and consistently drives above 80 mph, and always tries to wait till the last minute to brake, even while pulling a load.

Yes, I understand that parts issues occur, and quality issues arise; but without a complete analysis, you simply cannot delegate fault to a single source.

Bought new in 00' liked looks and power. Also the reputation for reliability. Problems: o2 sensor, belt tensioner, worst was the transmission at 80k considering I don't tow, drive offroad or hotrod it(much), pissed me off at over 4k replacement cost. I'm praying that nothing else major goes out for another 120k miles!! Knock on wood brother.

This may is my trucks birthday and all I can say is thanks. This truck is the best truck of all that are as I am writing this. I know it doesn't tow like the big boys do, but if I need towing power I can just borrow my sisters Silverado 2500HD or my other sisters Ford F-150 Lariat, although I do not like the Ford at all.

At this time I cannot think of any!

I have owned my 2003 Tundra for a little over a year and have put 10,000 miles on it, the truck has just over 20,000 miles total. For the 10,000 miles I put on it I would say about 50% of those miles are hiway, 30% city and 20% off road. I have not had any problems what so ever with the truck! Toyota had a recall on the lower ball joints and I had those replaced but I had no problems with them. The Tundra has the 4.7 fuel injected V8 and I have gotten as good as 19 mpg on the hiway. I have not checked it in town. I have the Off Road 4x4 TRD model with the tow pakage. I have had it on jeep trails, old skid roads and it is outstanding off the road. My brother has a 2004 Cherokee and he cannot believe how much better my Tundra rides. It has about a 7000 lb tow capacity and that is all I need, I have not towed anything very big with it yet. So if your looking for a good solid half ton pickup that has good fuel economy, plenty of power, you owe it to yourself to check out the Tundra.
