Strength:

Built to last. Overload protection works great.

Weakness:

I've overheated it a few times over the years. I don't think it's design allows for proper cooling of unit. I think that is the only reason I ever overheated it.

I got this thing used in 2000. It has been in my old 1990 Camaro pumping out bass ever since. I blew the plastic MTX logo off of the voice coils of my subs TWICE! I'm going to install it in my '06 Fusion next week. Squeaky clean bass is all I've ever heard from it. By far it is the best amplifier I've ever owned.

Amazing power, especially for the money.
longevity- im the second owner of this amp, its at least 3 years old and still haven't had a single problem with it (except for blowing three of my subs!)

Weakness:

havent found one yet

Amazing amp, i had two of the original alpine type-r's but i ended up blowing those. Now im on to two the the 500 RMS, 1500 peak 2ohm type-r's in a ported box and i still have to be careful on power. this thing is an absolute monster. People hear me INSIDE their house from a block away!

Strength:

price, dependable, runs clean and efficient, stays very cool!

Weakness:

ugly orange light, no external bass control, stays true to its ratings, so watch your settings on weaker subs

This beast fried my R.F T1 10 " subs! Really hammers out power and a dependable workhorse! Now running 1 JL 12w6v3 in vented @ 2ohm with 3 farad capacitance!

Strength:

Pros: it has one of the lowest x over setting @ 32 hz + + +

Weakness:

Cons: most of it’s power is unusable, because it will be so distorted by the time u get to the 1200 w. rating… that’s even if it can even reach that spec

I used to think that this amp is all that… but it’s verry over rated… I have two 12’s single voice coils @ 4 ohms… wire them in parallel on this mono amp u get 2 ohms for the so called 1200 watts rms… I took it out and replaced it with a hifonics colossus Generation XI … I know that u might be saying to your selves that “of course this amp can’t touch an 3000watt amp” but the colossus is a 2 channel amp… & it’s lowest output power is @ 4 ohms stereo 600 x 2… so I hooked my 2 12’s in stereo for the 1200watts (from the colossus) both playing @ 1200watts but the colossus played way louder & cleaner… the BP1200.1 can get loud @ certain frequencies & also distort @ a lot of other frequencies… I think it plays clean @ only one third of it’s rating, where as the colossus played clean @ 80% or better of it’s 1200watt (4 ohm stereo) claim. Best of the beginners mono amps

Strength:

Solid build, very powerful, excellent value for the price.

Weakness:

Not the most beautiful thing, lack of some additional amp features.

I have owned this amp for about 2 years. It is an excellent value for what I paid, and is built like a tank...the heatsink is heavy die-cast, the connectors are solid, etc. On the down side, it could be considered kind of ugly...it resembles a volcano somewhat when it is turned on (black heatsink with orange/red light around the top). This amp has endured a LOT of loud playtime on 1 or 2 15's over the last couple years and has not once hiccuped or overheated. It does what it was built to do well: drive subs. The amp has a built-in crossover which is somewhat effective, but it is lacking a subsonic filter (would have come in handy since it dishes out so much power), and it is also lacking any remote bass knob capability. But considering the price, I'm not disappointed by the absence of these features. Great amp!

Strength:

POWERFUL, sexy, powerful, did i mention powerful?

Weakness:

costs alot in noise violation tickets and fried subwoofers etc.

Bass output on this amp is the only thing that i've seen that beats my orion xtr1200 and if here's a secret for anybody using one of these bp amps, use Y addapters for your rca input and you'll find a significant drop in distortion and a boost in root mean square power. This amp fried my 2 pioneer black series 400WRMS 12" subs in about 3 minutes. I've never had it shut off because of heat, though I know friends who have had this problem. I had to change my 1.0 farad cap to a 2 farad cap so i could see my headlights during hte night. This thing when running at 1 ohm can melt 120amp fuses so make sure your wiring is top grade or you can have your very own in-car arc welder. Great amp and i'm sure i'll keep it for years.

Model Reviewed: JBL 1200.1 amp

Strength:

Power beyond rated RMS. Handles heavy and rapid bass loads clean and with little harmonic distortion. Seldom overheats. Moderately efficient with power.

Weakness:

If bridged at a 1 ohm load, amp tends to push unclean power to subs at high levels. This can cause damage to subwoofers. Also, this IS an efficient amp, however it will swallow power when it wants to. A very strong and well wired power supply is mandatory if you are shooting for SPL.

I've been in car audio installation for the past six years. You will not find a better deal than this amp. I have owned one for the last 2 years. It's rated RMS is way more than 1200. I have blown many high end subs with this amp, all of which were rated at well above 1200 Wrms. This amp's best performance is achieved with a second battery and at least a 1.0 farad capacitor. JBL is on the map for this one.
