Model Reviewed: JBL BP300.1 Mono Amplifier

Strength:

This thing is so brutal @ 40-50 hertz. It seems it clips when I over drive my cd player but that's because I need to higher the voltage of my cd player, other than that it bangs. It barely gets hot too. It has a very nice design. Also it's a cheap affordable amplifier with high performance/quality SPL (Sound Pressure Level) and SQ (Sound Quality).

Weakness:

Even the most expensive or best sounding amplifier has it's weeknesses, so I will honestly tell you about this amplifier's weekness. 1.) It's dynamic range seems to sound compressed at certain points. Specially at high volumes. I can also be mistaken though, because of my subwoofer's performance, that's also an important component that has to match with my amplifier's wants (not watts). 2.) It lacks Sound Quality about 25% less than my other amplifier that I use to have and hooked up also with the same sub. The name of my old amplifier was called Precision Power PCX250. I used to power my same sub and pushed underrated 200W and seemed to sound a litle louder and way more accurate sound than my JBL amplifier 300.1. 3.) It has an aweful input level. It seems like this thing needs more signal compared to my PCX250 amplifier. 4.) It has very little bass boost. It has up to 6 db +/-3. My old precision power had up to 12 db +/-3! And I had to lower it down alot. Also I had to lower my bass from the Alpine too.

It's an underrated 300W X 1 @ 2 ohms amplifier. I have one so far right now, till I have hooked up three JBL Mono amplifiers. I'm using only one 12" JBL subwoofer on a competition 3/4 ply wood port enclosure. I have no capacitors, no equalizers nor crossovers or any added power cables. I just have it connected with my stock power wiring from my car's amp. My cd player is an Alpine 2 Volt receiver with no over drive component to higher the sound level. This is a tricked out budget system that I really think I should tell you this stuff to you all, but I will anyway.

Precision Power PCX250 (Best sound quality ever heard). Planet Audio 300 (more expensive than JBL, but the embarracing thing is that JBL blows my Planet Audio 300 with the same output) I'm rating this amplifier 5 stars. The reason is because this thing can get serious depending on the wiring and depending on the right components I'm using. Besides, it's the best cheepest amplifier ever bought. If I had money Id'e go with JL Audio. But believe it or not, JBL's output seems to be loudER than any JL Audio amplifier WITH the same output @ 300W. Obviosly JL has a better SQ but then again look what we are comparing.......the best sounding amplifiers in the world v.s. the loudest Brand amplifier in the world!!!!!! That's interesting. And to finish this up.....I rate JBL "top 10" place as of right now in 2004. I can't say JL is number one or any other brand. "And never will". That's a fact. All I can say in my opinion's "best tastes"....is that between the top ten list just got to be included ... JL Audio, PPI, Rockford Fosgate & Zapco ALSO besides JBL! All this talking was by experience and by research. Thanks alot for your time.

Powers my two 12" subs without any problems. Crystal clear.

Weakness:

none so far

If you are looking for a hard working amp to drive subs and one that will not break the bank, I highly suggest checking into this work horse. The amp is driving two Rockford Fosgate 12" subs in 1.25" enclosures. We have been very impressed with the its performance. The system is in a Nissan X-Terra, and it will simply blow you away! I paid to have the amp wired simply because I could not figure out how to get through the firewall. Some say it is hard to set up, but the gain is very easy to adjust. I did so because the audio shop had it turned up too high so the amp slope was steeper than the volume. After lowering the gain slightly, the two match and sounds great!

I have nicknamed my amp wolverine for the power it puts out for it's size.

Weakness:

None.

I have used this product through 3 sets of subs as i gradually upgrade my car. I originally bought this for the pure fact that it was marked so low when I saw it I immediately purschased it and the Kenwood that I intended to buy. Took them both home and gave each one a week to tune and tweak until I settled on the JBL, had to it blew out my subs, took the kenwood back and bought some new subs with the money. Currently I am pushing 2 12" Infinity Kappas with the plan to go up to 3 when I finish the designs for the box, as of right now the only amps I will let in my car are JBL or RF.

I am very impressed with the JBL bp300.1. I have it powering two kicker c12's and it pushes them hard! It has a sweet design, cool lighting, and backs it up with its great performance. Many people complain about the adjustments, but I did not find a problem with them. When the slot in the screw is perfectly horizontal it is half way on(doesn't take a rocket scientist). I like the direct connect terminals that accept 4 guage wire. This amlifier is definately worth the $$$.

Strength:

i like the screw type batery, remote, ground and speaker output terminals they allow for connections with 4 gauge wire i also liked the 4 rca inpts and the 4 high level inputs to eliminate fadding. i also liked the fact that it uses two 20amp fuses. the light on top looks really cool its not like other amps with the little red dot on the side this one is a lite that illuminates the perimeter of the square where it says jbl so you can tell easyly if its on. the heatsink desing is also realy cool is different from other amp desings i looks like if it was desinged by the same folk who made the stealth bomber.

Weakness:

the controls are no so easy to adjust. they are labeled but the markings dont correspond to where you actually have it set to. it has 3 control knobs gain, bass boost, and xover, but as i mentioned they are not easy to adjust for example i cant tell exactly where the half way point is for the gain, this is not a real big issue because al the other features make up for this weakness.

great amp, easy to hook up it has 4 rca inputs and 4 high level inputs to eliminate fadding bass. ived had it for about 3 weeks now hooked up tp a pair of infinity 1220w reference series 12' subwoofers in parallel this little amp has a lot of power, the bass is tight and clear

small, efficent, good looking (the light!) great headroom at 4 Ohm, and smart protection circuitry. class d amp with a darlington output matrix!! ahh rediscovered modern technology!!

Weakness:

very hard amp to fine tune

I'm just gettin' back into the car audio game........the last decent system i had was 5+ years ago in my old blazer.....it consisted of a RF punch 100DSM running two Orion Cobolt 15" DVC subs in a 4 cf sealed single chamber 1.5 inch mdf box. with an alpine 3522s running 2 component punch 6.5 inch mid basses and tweets in the rear & two punch 4x6 plates in the dash. not bad by '90s standards. So i get a 2002 blazer 'bout 6 months ago and i want to drop a small 10 into an old bandpass box i had. i went to advance audio here in naples and they had a used punch 60 for a buck twenty and added a very versatile memphis 10" svc studio sub for another eighty five. sounded good but the old punch 60 didn't hold up very well to the combo of a over driven line level from the factory headunit SWFL heat and the appatite of the memphis sub........so one day the left channel went bye-bye and it was time for a new amp.........AA had me look at a couple........pioneer, memphis and jbl. i also considered rockford and alpine but wanted to buy locally from this shop. i didn't like the pioneer and the memphis wasn't in stock........so i ended up with a jbl bp300.1..........lucky me. i had NO idea 'bout thes mono "class d" amps on the market now. wow. granted it took ALOT of fine tuning of the line level in, the gain on the amp the x-over and bass boost to get it balanced but damn...now this lil guy slams that 4 ohm 10 with 150 clean down to 10 hzs watts of bass. i actually had to back the gain off because it was over powering the factory driven full range speaks. i could theoretically add another 1-3 svc 4 ohm 10s to the mix but i'm content for now. highly reccommended very flexible and efficent amp. had a slight problem with the line levels being over driven but the amp let me know this and i corrected it (probable what toasted the punch 60 but oh well). i have seen this amp for less then $150 online and if your comfortable with your own install and troubleshooting save the 100 or so bucks but i have installed alot of systems and i needed help with this amp. the guys at advance audio answered all my questions and loaned me thier time, tools and professional ear.....so that was worth much more than 100 or so bucks to me. good luck.

Strength:

Excellent power for the money, looks like an intergalactic warship, stays cool, very efficient, internal parallel feature is great.

Weakness:

I don't like setscrews for power connections, markings for gain/crossover settings are useless.

I bought this amp used from a private seller for $175 cdn; when I revieved it, I immediately ripped open the box like a little kid sitting by the Christmas tree. What a cool looking piece of equipment! It looks like it should be battling warships in outer space! When I lifted it out of the box however, I wasn't really impressed. It felt, uhm, cheap?! This thing is a featherweight. Then I hooked it up, and realized that these D-class amps are really efficient and don't need huge, heavy heatsinks. With (at least) 300W rms at my command, and drawing a rated maximum of 29 amps, I would say it's pretty darn efficient, considering most class A/B amps will require about twice as much current to generate the same power. The power and speaker connections are made by setscrews (I prefer terminal strips myself, but these work alright, as long as you fasten your amp securely) and there are 2 pairs of RCA inputs, to eliminate fading. The gain and crossover markings are useless, as the adjusting screw goes well beyond said markings. You have to play it by ear here. Otherwise it's very easy to hook up and operate. So how does it perform? Hooked up to my pair of 12" reference subwoofers, I would say it lives up to it's expectations, and then some! The bass is tight and very well controlled, and the crossover works nicely. You can even dial in up to 6db of boost (I leave it at 0). I managed to slam out 140.5 db, and that's with the subwoofers in a small sealed box! I would say it's powerful and definitely worth the chump change you can get it for! No mystery why this amp is so popular!
