Strength:

Great amp that I added to my stock cd/cassette player with new speakers. Nice compact design that allowed me to place it under my truck seat. Price was competitive with other amps.

Weakness:

Maybe not the amp fault but blew out my stereo after 3 days and had to get the stereo repaired at no cost. Since then no problems (over 1 year).

Made my stereo come alive and greatly enhanced the quality of the lower and top end range. Would recommend it.

Strength:

Rugged, simple, and adjustable

Weakness:

Gets to hot and clips after listening for awhile, especially on summer days.

paid 230.00 for it and was looking for a amp to power 1 MTX 7000 4ohm. I had some problems(may be a 1 time thing). I burned a connector up on my speaker, amp overheated alot and would turn off and something inside amp broke off. Returned it to MTX and they sent it back(still was broken)might have been from UPS dropping box. All I have ever heard is good things about MTX amps so I think this may be a 1 time thing.

Strength:

What an ass-kickin amp

Weakness:

I can't think of any.

I bought the Thunder 2160 (exact same amp as the newer 2150) in 1995 for $195, and used it as my first sub amp, powering a single Polk db12 in a sealed enclosure. It slammed--I couldn't imagine wanting more bass than that.

But now, with a more sophisticated setup, I'm running dual 6 ohm Diamond 10's in separate sealed enclosures and wired in parallel to (what else?) my NEW MTX Thunder 2300, bridged to provide over 800 watts to these speakers in their present configuration. And with trunk room to spare. 2 farad Lightning Cap is hidden in the jack box, and I have no crossover since my new head unit has separate sub preouts.

What became of my old 2160? It is now running the midbass fill speakers on the rear deck, and sounding as clean and fast as the day it came out of the box. And for my front satellites (Diamond Hex 5.25" separates)? A nice new MTX Thunder 2150 that, except for the different color scheme, looks identical to the 2160.

I could have spent thousands on my amps, but this is the truth: if you have good speakers (and the Diamonds are VERY good), you won't even notice the difference in sound from these to many more expensive amplifiers of similar output. It's quiet, it's clean, and if you put together a husky enough system, you won't run it very hot unless you're insane or wearing earplugs. My mids and tweets have no problem keeping up with the subs in this setup, with around 75 watts going to each.

When you're only playing frequencies above 90 Hz, 75 watts is a lot of power.

So if you're thinking about buying the 2150, don't sweat it unless you're planning on shaking the car apart (then you might need more power). If you've got a SUV, it'll make a good sub amp. If you have to put subs in the trunk, you might want a 2300 to get the decibels needed to get the bass from the trunk to the passenger compartment. But two 2150s make a far better 4 channel than any comparably-priced 4 channel amp out there.

Strength:

Compact size, brutal amounts of power, solidily built

Weakness:

ugly as hell

I have owned the mtx 280 in the past 6 months. It's a older version of the 275x. Rated at 160 RMS at 12.5, and 280 at 14.4, the amp is measured to put out 240 RMS at 12.5, and 350 RMS at 14.4. All of those power from an amp measuring 7 by 9 inches!! The funny thing is that the amp barely gets hot running at 2 ohm mono! I have heard that mtx amps run really hot, but not mine... It out pounds both the RF 250a2 and kicker impulse 70X2. I have found this amp to be more than adaquate to be powering my two tens in a moderate car audio setup. I would recommend this amp to anyone especially at the price of 177 canadian, which I got it for!

I do not have the 2150 but I do have the older thunder 2160. They put out they are the same amplifier with a different name and color. The size and everything is identical. The bench put the two out at two watts apart. Anyway, I loved this amp. I pushed two 12" x-max's with it. I put them in parallel. The only problem is that the amp gets hot and shuts down after about 40 min of intense listening. I recently purchased 2 21400 ppi amps to push my 4 x max 12"'s. The ppi is a much better amp but costed 5 times as much. Oh well, stereo's that pound are expensive.

I swear that we had this unit running 8 subwoofers. The impedance i measured at under 1 ohm bridged so bellow .5 ohms internally. We ran it for over a half hour and could not put the amp into protection. It did get quite hot but it would not surrender. This amp is not even rated to do 2 ohms bridged. Excellent product. Nice crossover and warm clear sound quality.
