Strength:

Power and versatility down to 1 ohm, with high voltage or high current capabilities

Weakness:

Little hot, never a problem though

Great amp, even though it was refurbished. Paid 149 at the Sony outlet. Pushes MB Quart SBR 12's nicely. I've used this setup for just under a year, and they sound just as good as the day I hooked it up and hit 141db off the dash. WOW!!! The amp and subs are both very high quality, and it shows. The amp does heat up quite easily, but it's never shut off while I was using it. This is even after a good hour or hour and a half of high volume use. By the way, if anyone's interested in this system, please let me know. I can put a price on anything, including this system. Thanks

Strength:

1 ohm stable. Way underrated in power. In 1 ohm with the gain turned up it is putting out like 680x1 divided by 2 in parallel. That is about 340 watts per sub.

Weakness:

Very light weakness is the heat it puts out and the fact that if used hard enough for long enough it overheats but dont most amps?

I dont know what you guys who have it overheating are doing wrong.. I have two Infinity Kappa 10s in a bandpass box hooked up to this amp in a 1 ohm parallel load and the gain is up all the way and the bass boost is up half way and I hit harder than any other 10s I have ever heard. I bump in summer all the time and this amp has only went into thermal protect once and it was after like an hour and a half during 90 degree weather last summer. You guys who have it overheating have just straight hooked it up with the wrong wiring or something. Mine works beautifully. I have never seen such a good bass amp for the price and for even more...

Strength:

I havent had any problems with it at all so far (about 2 months) It pushes 2 MTX 12's nicely. Never cuts out, doesnt over heat. I have beat a few of my friends higher quality systems with it. But since mine is configured nicely, it sounds really good.

Weakness:

None yet

I like this amp alot and i am considering buying the little brother to run my highs. No problems at all. Sounds pretty darn good for the money. I would definitely say that its worth what i paid for it.

Strength:

puts out good power to two JL 10wo, hooked in parallel it pounds them pretty good. Could pound them more though

Weakness:

Gets sloppy running a two ohm load but the worst thing is how this thing overheats after about 20 minutes, not even at full blast. That just makes this thing not even worth it. I did only pay 170 bucks for it but I have yet to be impressed with just about any mass produced Sony. At least it doesnt melt apart like the Jensens when it overheats. Another thing that is annoying is that sometimes when turning it up it will just suddenly cut out and I will have to power down the entire stereo for awhile. It doesnt matter how it is hooked up when it does this, and it is hooked up correctly

Over all this amp pumps the two JLs nicely in parallel, If you try running them on just a 4 ohm load it is not nearly enough. It just cant take the heat in Two ohm mono, Never got the oportunity to bridge it into 4 ohm mono, it might run a lot better when bridged into that. I did notice that it even gets quite hot running at four ohm stereo load but doesnt seem to cut out as fast.

Comparing it to A Power Acoustic amp, it blows it away. It also blows away a 400 watt radio shack amp, but I would definatly expect just about anything to blow away anything that radio shack makes

Strength:

powerful and very versatile, nice fit and finish, 1-ohm stable

Weakness:

none that I've found to date..

I purchased this amplifier reluctantly. I was never a large fan of Sony equipment, especially the car audio, but I am pleasantly surprised. I first auditioned this amp connected to 2 Sony 12" Xplod subs. It was hooked up in parallel in and enclosed box. This thing just pounded. I was very impressed. Amplifier played for 20 minutes or more at a very high volume and the temperature still remained cool. The salesman told me, "What do you have to lose, it has a standard 3 year replacement waranty." I purchased the amp and subs to match and installed them into my car and haven't had one ounce of trouble. No shutting down due to heat or anything. I was so impressed with it by it's power, features, and reasonable cost that I purchased it's little brother; the 552Hx and connected it to 4-5x7 speakers in the interior of the car. It too lives up to it's expectations. I don't have one complaint about either of them and think they are a fantastic value. I've had really expensive amplifiers in the past that sound just as good as the Sony, but for the cost of the Sony, I am extremely happy that I listened to the salesman and would recommend this amp to anyone. (there's a first...8)

Strength:

Puts out lots of sound with not a lot of watts

Weakness:

Overheated on two seperate occasions

I had this amp pushing two eclipse 10" dvc's. It slammed like none other. When I upgraded to an eclipse aluminum cone 12" i kept the amp hooked up to the 12. The sub is rated at 500 rms and this amp was only pushing 280 watts but I outslammed my friend who had two mtx 12's and lots of watts. this amp gives tons of bang for the buck!

Strength:

Versatility, you can run it off high current, or high voltage. I choose high voltage because you can run it at a 4ohm load for the nice and low .0004 thd %.

Weakness:

I don't know what the two losers below are thinking, I've never had it overheat, never had it cut off, and have never heard any distortioin.

I have two of these amps, both bridged. Each one is pushing a kicker CompVR 12" sub. I first got hooked on them when I saw them being used at a local competition, of course they were loading them to 1 ohm and like had the thickest wire they could running to them. I have simple 8 awg wire running to each one. They are both mounted and have plenty of space around them. I've never had a heating problem with them, and distortion is not noticable at all. It's strange that the two people who reviewed before me said that this product was bad, then again they probably installed it with loose 18 awg wires, non mounted, put carpet over them and have them bridged in series to some 8" rampage subs off a factory deck. You know how that goes. To be honest with you, I would pay the price they have listed here for $280, but since I got mine for half that price I think they are well worth it.

Strength:

Nice looks and thats it. This thing heats up badly and whats up with the cut off point once you reach a certain volume. 1 12" was fine but once 2 was hooked up it kept cutting out.

Weakness:

Distortion levels way too high and the price is way too high. I had Pyramid stuff that sounded better.

I traded my Kenwood 728s for this red piece of junk and I think it was the worst move I could have ever done. Sony should just stick to their video games and thats that.

Strength:

The power is amazing, looks great too

Weakness:

Maybe heat management. could use a fan or two

This amp has power to spare. blew apart two kenwood 10" tornado cone woofers when wired bridged parallel at 2ohms. Before it blew the woofers apart, i did have a few problems with it cutting out when hot. particularly after about an hour at a really loud volume. amp never went into thermal protection any of these times though, so i half blame the woofers themselves. amp is also power hungry. never got full effect from it until i added a farad of capacitance. overall great amp. powers 2 10" boston's now. amazing sound (PS. dont buy the kenwood tornado cone woofers)

Strength:

Nice sleek looks and decent power. I have two of these amps, one is used on my 5x7 Infinity Kapps in the back of the car and the other is used on the 5 1/4 inch component system in the front. These amps really push my speakers so they have strong deep bass.

Weakness:

Not powerful enough to run any halfway decent subwoofer.

I really like the bass that these amps give my speakers. The price is unbeatable at $100, even if they are refurbished. I would recommend this amp to anyone who has aftermarket speakers and can’t hear them over your sub.

Similar Products Used:

Gives tighter bass than other amps that I have own, ie. Crunch.
