Model Reviewed: Sony XM-754HX

Strength:

Class AB amp with ability to drive speaker loads down to 1 ohm stereo or 2 ohm bridged.

Weakness:

Power connections on opposite side of amp than those for all other wire connections.

I have my Sony XM-754HX currently running in 3 channel mode. The front 2 channels are running stereo on a pair of 6.5 inch coaxial Kenwood speakers and the rear 2 channels are bridged on a pair of 4 ohm 6.5 inch woofers. The amp provides plenty of continuous power for any volume setting. After extended periods of use, the amp does warm up a bit but the built in fan kicks on to keep temperatures in the safe operating range. Sound quality is actually quite good and the amplifier footprint is quite small for a now, 15 year old class AB amp. I've been into the car audio scene for 25 years and can honestly recommend the Sony XM-754HX as a reliable amplifier for daily use. Keep in mind that this is being said for an example that has years of use on its circuits. This says alot for a Sony's design and manufacturing capabilities especially when you take into consideration the demands that an average consumer puts on their amplifier. A good used one of these models can now be had for a modest price and can expect to perform quite well even compared to today's modern designs. Mine has alot of years on it and based on its current operation I don't see why it won't last another 15+ years in my classic car.

Strength:

Easily controls the output wattage to my subs and interior speakers, never over heats or cuts off.

Weakness:

Kind of ugly design, but who cares what it looks like when its doing its job.

When i purchased this sony amp i was sketchy of how well it would push my two 12 inch audiobahn subwoofers. I have had absolutely no problems with overheating or cut offs. This amp pushes my speaker with a great deal of power and it gives what it takes to make my subs quake.

Seems to be comparable to the rockfort fosgate amps.

Strength:

Dependin on your needs. Good amp for mid range speaker upgrade.

Weakness:

Not enough power to push a good quality sub. Screws holding the body together are not placed in a good place. I blew my first amp as I was installing it when the screwdriver touching the power connection made contact with one of these screws. Got it replaced by Sony though.

I purchased two amps at a really incredible price at a Sony Outlet store for $120 each. I use one amp to my 6 1/2's and 5 1/4" component speakers which works very well. The other amp I have pushing a 10" JL Audio DVC and when I try to kick up the bass the amp cannot keep up and easily overheats and makes the speaker crack and pop. I called JL Audio thinking its the speaker but they guaranteed me a replacement if I thought it was defective and said that it must be the amp. Audio shops said the same thing. I hooked it up to a Rockford Fosgate 500W and the sub really rocks. Good luck.

Strength:

75x4 great for amping cabin speakers. Gives good clean power. Hi/Lo crossover. Speaker level inputs...

Weakness:

None i can think of. Could always use more EQ settings like their other models with the 5 channel EQ on em, but thats ok.

I have this amp hooked to my Premier speakers and have fooled many people into thinking i have subwoofers. It gives plenty of power to max out the RMS on most speakers. The bass boost on the amp also helps to minimize head unit clipping from having the bass too high. I actually have my head unit bass at 0dB.

Strength:

Variable crossover, hi-voltage/hi-current switch, good value

Weakness:

Large mark-up (which I didn't pay), cheezy looks.

$350 US is definitely overpriced, but the mark-up is so large, you should be able to talk down the salesman. For a standard 2 channel + sub config, this amp performs quite well. The box has a "800 WATTS!!" sticker on it, which should definitely be ignored.

In my experience, one of the top Japanese 4 ch. amps in it's class.
