Model Reviewed: Soundstream Reference 300

Strength:

Robust design, clean, powerful, detailed, open sound with perfect timing and all round musicality.Superb for powering mids/ midbass or full range speakers. Easily handles being bridged into 2 ohms have not pushed it harder but runs very cool. Sound through subs is tight extremely controlled and powerful but falls very slightly from a perfect rating as it lacks the last nth of bass extention for sub work.

Weakness:

Controls for bridged/stereo and hi/lo amp are underneath the unit requiring removal of the amp to adjust. Freqency responce only goes down to 25hz so though very good is not quite as good for powering subs as it is for mids/tweets.

Currently used powering MB Quart 4 ohm dvc sub in a fully active install comprising Rockford Fosgate cd mp3 player Kenwood KDC600 electronic crosssover, Denon DCA800 amp, infinity mids and tweets, clarion mid bass component speakers. I have tried the 300 in different configurations with a variety of speakers. The Denon sounds best without being bridged and the soundstream produces a much tighter and more controlled bass than the Denon hence the current configuration of amp within this system.

Strength:

Raw power . Sound Quality . Control .

Weakness:

None I can find

I have always ran SS reference amps . I have a 10.0 and 500 a 700sx and a 604 . All have been tru workhorses . They are way underated on power and will absolutly pound subwoofers . The Bass soundstream produce is nothing short of PERFECT TIGHT BASS . I run my Soundstream 700sx on my CDT components and it is flat out amazing the detail is perfect . the midbass is astounding . No Other amp compares to the old references PERIOD >

Strength:

It has the ability to drive 1/2 ohm loads. It has various wiring configurations. It accepts 4 gauge wire, definitely a plus. It has High Current and High Power settings depending on your application.

Weakness:

In my application, I can say that the only drawback was the lack of a crossover. But then again, since I was wanting to utilize a crossover with subsonic filter anyway, this was probably not a drawback for me. It may be for any one who demands built-in crossover.

I bought this amplifier through ebay. I was a little reluctant to make the purchase but I'm glad I did. The amp cost me $95 plus shipping about 8 more. I am very satisfied with the purchase. I am using it in my Chevy silverado extended cab p/u. This amp is pushing 3 10" Punch subwoofers (3410) without sweat. The amp does not clip. The only problem I had was a blown fuse because I had the amplifier set at High Power when it should of been set at High Current because of its low impedance load; Very reliable, efficient, and underestimated.

Model Reviewed: Reference 405

Strength:

Sound quality, good power in small size, reliability

Weakness:

Price, no end caps to cover the connections (I mentioned this is on the floor of a truck).

The 405 is rated like 4x40 + 1x100. I installed in under the seat of my Tahoe so it gets plenty of air. Pushing 6.5" JBL separates in the doors and 4x10 alpine (I know, I know) in the rear with a 10" Polk EX sub in a sealed box. I have had this setup for about 4 years with zero problems. This truck is worked hard on and offroad. The amp has had sand, mud, snow, salt, and sodas dumped on it. The original energizer bunny. I really love the sound quality. 100W is not a lot for a sub, but I have an efficient sub and I''m not into thumping, so the bass is fine. It will slam you in the back if sitting in the rear!

Strength:

sound stage, can take a beating, huge power supply

Weakness:

No x-over

This amp is the most versitile amp I have ever owned. I wasn''t very happy at its looks, but the instant I hooked it up I was amazed by the sound. I just proves that 150 watt clean amp will beat a 600 watt dirty amp

This amp rocks - using it to drive seperates in the kick panels, and using a reference 700 to drive 3 12w6's. it sounds great, and sound q even improves more with a dedicated cap. You really do get what you pay for.

Strength:

Very clean power, STRONG AMP, lots of power

Weakness:

It'll suck you're car clean of power if you don't beef up you're alternator or get a capacitor.

This amp is a monster....You give it some subs to play with and it will make you happy. I got mine at Soundcity.com for $420 , it did retail for around $900. I have it running 3 12" kicker comp's. and the car slams around 140. I still need to do some more work, like upgrade the wiring, get a cap, beef up the alternator, and i plan on getting new subs. Probably be between 140 - 145dbs with that all said and done. It's a great amp...but watch you're power supply.
