Model Reviewed: ZX-7140

Strength:

Some flexibility with how you wire your speakers. REALISTIC power rating. I'm upset I got into the whole pumping bass thing, but oh well. Good power for what you pay for it $85-95 (170 watts RMS). A great amplifier for a low power SQ set-up.

Weakness:

Just the cosmetics. Black chrome... be careful.

This was the first 2 channel subwoofer amplifier I ever bought. Power wasn't an issue with this amplifier. It powered two 10" Reactive subwoofers in a bandpass enclosure (this was really a flee market system). Unfortunately, I live in small town USA, and got drawn into the pumping bass crowd so needless to say I sold it. Its rated at 170 watts RMS (bridged @ 4 ohm mono, 14.8V), or 85 watts RMS x2 (@ 2 ohm stereo, 14.8V). The 2 channel Volfenhag amplifiers' are also tri-way capable meaning you can power two speakers between an impedance of 2-8 ohms and one additional speaker at an impedance of 8 ohms. All in all, this amplifier had adequate power ratings, but unfortunately I was one of those dumb bass hungry adolescent males. Cosmetics were definitely an issue as with any amplifier with a black chrome chasis. If you touched it with your fingers, the prints would be very noticable when the amplifier gets warm. Smudges would remain unless you wiped them with cleaning solvents which eventually wears away the emblem. As with most amplifiers, Volfenhag uses high-level inputs if you're working with a factory head unit. Only thing is, instead of using RCAs, they have a specially made input connection which comes with the amplifier. The amp requires a Remote Turn-on lead to so removing the head unit isn't optional. The remote wire has to connect to the back of the head unit in order for the amplifier to work. The amplifier does have a Center Frequency knob for the Bass Boost. However, I strongly recommend not using the Bass Boost. I'm guilty of having my Bass Boost maxed for almost 3 years so don't feel disappointed if you did the same.

Well I've used the ZX-7180 for 2 years, the the power rating were significantly higher than the ZX-7140.
