Model Reviewed: Eclipse 4440 Cassette Receiver CDC Control

Strength:

Sound quality of cassette player! Player operations are rather quiet also. Internal amplification is good for a DIN sized in dash deck.

Weakness:

Having to add a CD changer to take advantage of the Eclipse Security Network, but most other systems do not offer this type of security at all, so not really all that bad. I will just be a little nervous without being able to detach the face for security. Once I add the CD changer, I will at least have some security.

I am a long time fan of musicality and am currently earning a degree in audio engineering. To get back in school, I was forced to sell all my high-end car audio gear along with the nice newer vehicle that I was driving. Since, I have felt like something was missing everytime I turned the key in my current, rather beat up, 1992 vehicle. I was missing the sonic integrity of quality stereo equipment. I would almost rather listen to the valve train noise radiating from the engine and the gusting wind noise from 4 windows being down while cruising at 70 mph due to no a/c in the Florida summer heat, than listen to the harsh abrasive squawk that came from my old FM stereo, with a broken tape player, and rattled out from my 1992 factory speakers with dry rotted surrounds. Sometimes the noise of my teeth grating together was better than those screeching paper dual cones. Anyways, I recently purchased a gently used Eclipse 4440 Cassette Receiver and installed it the same day. The music never sounded sweeter than right after I started my vehicle and popped in one of my old mixed tapes that I had not heard in over a year. Contrast is truly an awakening. I used to be picky about resonating frequencies and worry about the precise Q settings of my quasi-parametric EQ. Now, I am just happy to have something that plays a cassette tape. I do still have a rather decent home stereo system, but I needed something of quality in my vehicle as well. The cassette tape signal reproduction is of high quality and among the best I've heard for mobile audio applications. It honestly rivals my old Nakamichi TD-7 mobile deck for sound quality, but with more modern features and controls. I will be adding an Eclipse CD changer as soon as my budget allows, and as soon as I find another great buy. When I begin my career in audio engineering and get a nicer newer vehicle (like my last vehicle), I am seriously considering taking this deck with me.

Similar Products Used:

My last system included: Nakamichi TD-7 tape deck with the Nakamichi MB-9 CD changer w/ Precision Power: Par-225 Pre-amp EQ, Par-456 x-over, (4) A600 amps, and an A404 amp. Dynaudio: (4) 1" dome tweets, (4) 3" dome mids and (4) 8" midbass drivers. One set for front and one set for rear. (This was before Dynaudio came up with the 240MKII system, but I would have rather had the larger midbass drivers anyways. McCauley: (2) 7012 12" pro subs, and (2) 18" pro subs. (These things produced some of the cleanest richest bass that I've ever heard) They're better known in professional live sound reinforcement applications than car audio! Prior to that system, I've owned an Alpine Cassette Deck 7090 or something ($800 deck back in the day). Pair of Image Dynamics IDQ-8 midbass drivers with Image Dynamics horns. MB Quart QM's, many sets. A/D/S speakers including, AL6, 325i/s, 300i/s, 200i/s. Subs from Punch Pros with the 100 oz magnets (one of the best subs way back), Kickers, PPI Flat Piston Pros etc.etc... Currently all I have is this Eclipse Cassette Deck and a pair of A/D/S 325im speakers, but I'm thrilled!
