Strength:

This deck has so many strengths. First of all, the MDAC. Alpine's new DA Converter. It is the best sounding CD Player that isnt 20 or 24 Bit. The MDAC is no Regulated 1 Bit DAC bullcrap. It is FAR better, as a matter of fact, it is 3 Bit, not one, other things that Alpine included in it made it sound even better than it should. The MDAC Converter is EXTREMELY clear, with VERY spacious bass response, the highs are very clean, very spacious. This deck also has 4Volt preout, Alpine's 4Volt signal is something that is out of this world! I use to have a Kenwood X815, JUNKY, the signal was WEAK, it says 4.5Volts, but it sounds like 1Volt. And a big plus, anytime you throw a good amp on Alpine's preout signals, you enter a whole new world of sound. The BBE is a good feature, especially if you have a amp, a GOOD amp, plus the BBE Noise Cancellation System by Alpine. VERY LOUD AND CLEAR! Dual Illumination makes this deck match your interior lights. Choose between ether Green, or Amber. Nice display, even though it fades a little in daylight, but I really dont care, the sound is more important to me than the looks are. I HIGHLY recommend this unit to anyone serious about sound.

Weakness:

Well, It doesn't have a third set of preout's for subwoofers, or a DC/DC converter.

YES I would definitly recommend this one. Just read what I wrote in the "Strengths" section, and you will see what I mean. The system setup I am running is awesome! Here it is.
Head Unit - Alpine 7840
Equalizer - Alpine G180 (11 band EQ with 3 4Volt prein's and preout's with subwoofer level control)
Front Speakers - Memphis Multi-Sync Encore 5.25 Components
Rear Speakers - Memphis Studio Encore 6x9's
Subs - Two 12" Memphis ST Studio Sub's
4 Channel Memphis Studio amp for the vocals
2 Channel Memphis Studio amp for the sub's
Lighting Audio Wires (best wires they have)

This system is built towards TOTAL Sound Quality, but it still delivers plenty of SPL (I flashed a 156 on the scale at a USAC competition!)

If anyone can still find a 7840, GET IT. Unless your rich, then sit and wait, because Alpine is bringing out an INCREDIBLE deck later this year. It's called the F1 for right now, I'm not sure if this is the final name or not, but this head unit's DA Convertor is a Dual 28Bit Sign Magnitude. Estimated price is somewhere around $2,500 or more! I will definitly get this one.

I have used the the Alpine 7845...its better than these I'm mentioning with it, but it used a Regulated 1Bit DAC. It is a $550 reciever, but the Alpine 7840 sounds tons better. I used the Pioneer DEH7000R. Good, but nothing compared to the Alpine. I have also used Kenwood X815...the Pioneer sounds alot better, if that tells you anything.

Strength:

This receiver has alot of strengths. First of all, the clarity is something that you will love. I use to have a Pioneer DEH-7000 and it was ok, but didnt match the clarity that the 7840 provided. It is very simple and easy to use, the BBE sounds very good when you have an amp hooked on to whatever your runnin. I use Polk EX 5.25 components in the front, and Polk EX 6x9 3-Way's in the back, and it sounds very good. Definitely a good choice seeing as how its on clearance at Circuit City.

Weakness:

Well, for my taste, its good enough to last me till I can get the Sony Mobile ES CDX-C90, which is the baddest deck on the market! The sound quality rules! Well of course though seeing as how it has 4 Burr-Brown 20Bit D/A Converters.

For anyone who is seriously into car audio with alot of money to spend, then dont get this, get the Sony Mobile ES CDX-C90. But for someone who just wants something very loud and clear then go for the Alpine. And anyone who wants the best full-range speakers, and component speakers, go for Polk Audio. The Polk EX series handles more power and sounds just as good as the DX series. And for the bass, ether Polk, MTX, or if your really serious with alot of money, Cerwin-Vega Stroker Series. Which are the hardest hittin subs in the world. Well at least thats what Car Stereo Review said, and I love the Stroker series, best I have ever heard.

I used the Pioneer DEH-7000r and it compares pretty good, but the clarity doesnt even come close.

Strength:

these reciever has lots of functions and is a good priced reliable reciever. I have had mine for a lillte over a year and it still looks and acts brand new.

Weakness:

The Reciever has troubles playing CD-R discs and will not play CD-RW discs at all.. It has a incredible difficult to read display during the day and the Remote tends to not work when it gets really cold

Well all in all i would recommend this reciever to anyone looking for a good reciever.. I paid $300 for it over a year ago and it still operates great. there are a few minor weaknesses but nothing that woudl discourage me from buying another Alpine. This reciever has plenty of power and made a incredible differance from my other deck

Strength:

Excellent range, sounds great, BBE

Weakness:

Display is WAY too dim in daylight - only really visable at night. Buttons are a little too small

I picked this up when it came out last March. I'm using it with a Alpine ERE-G180 EQ, two V-12 amps, and Infinity speakers/sub in my 1998 Olds Bravada.

First of all, I think it sounds great, especially at high volume. I listen to everything from jazz to punk and it all sounds good.

However, the display is way to dim - so dim, in fact, that I initally thought the blackout feature was on by mistake. At night it's nice and clear. I actually went back to the store I bought it at and they told me that was normal for Alpine amps - I looked at the display models they had and they were dim too. Somehow I can't help but feel this is B.S. - maybe if I could figure out how to change the display to Amber (lost the manual)

Otherwise, not bad at all, if you can get it for under $275.

Strength:

CD player, 4volt, BBE, CD changer capable. No extra not needed garbage.

Weakness:

None

I love this deck. My 4th Alpine. I got a good deal on a sont CDX-7850 2 months ago, what a piece of crap!!!!! I had two pairs of Diamond audio 5.25 component speakers and 1 JL10W6 and it sounded aweful! Changed to this unit it was the biggest night and day diff I have ever heard between two components. I love the BBE, the only part of this unit I do not use is the deck power.
Alpine has the right Idea, NO EXTRA BS. The Sony unit took me 15 minutes to figure how to switch off the stupid moving dragon display, it was embarrasing!
You cannot go wrong with this unit.

Strength:

BBE makes a huge difference in sound. The CD-Title feature is cool, if you have the time. 4-volt pre-outs. ***Most importantly--IT HAS A KNOB!!*** (Alpine calls it a rotary coder, but it IS a knob.)

Weakness:

Feels a little hot, but maybe that's normal.

I got this on a special during the state fair. I had to wait 2 months for my Dad to get it in. Let me tell you, it was worth the wait. This is an awesome CD player. For the price I paid, $335, all other similar-priced players from other companies are not compareable at all. This has the M-DAC in it, which I really like. It also has some cool features that are functional, like the 4-V pre-out and a mute. The amp really brought my 6X8 speakers from crap to awesome. They now have lots of bass and sing.

As far as skipping goes, I hit it very hard on the side, wiggled it around, and a few other little things, and it had no effect on tracking. I think this is an awesome head unit for the price. I would not hesitate on buying it again. The BBE makes a huge difference in the sound. This head has good features, and nothing that I don't need. The amp in it really pushes my speakers well, and I can't wait to get a sub in my car using the 4-V pre-outs. I think this is an awesome unit for the price, and I think it is hard to beat.

If your considering buying, don't hesitate to e-mail me.

The Alpine 7840 is an in dash cd player that can also control an alpine cd changer. This is a new model for 99, which also employs Alpine new d/a converterthe m-dac. This unit also has BBE processing built in, remote control, 4-volt pre-out, and a detachable face. I've had this unit for almost 6 months in my 98 Honda Prelude. Other equipment currently in my car includes:
Alpine ERE-G180 EQ
Alpine 4 channel amp MRV-F405
Boston acoustics Pro 6.5's
MB quart 6x9 2-ways QM-1269

The over-all sound quality of this unit is excellent. The cd section is probally the best sounding of all units i've listened too. The bass is tight, the highs are crip, and overall a very transparent sound. I hear little details in music that other units failed to reproduce. downside here is that on music recorded off lp's you sometimes hear the little pops and scratches of the source. But lowering the treble a bit correct that problem.
The unit has not skipped once, even while driving over bumps at highway speeds.
This is great since I had 3 Blaupunkt Alaska units that would contantly skipped all the time. (see my review on the Blaupunkt Alaska)

FM sound quality is great. And the unit does a good job filtering FM interferences. But anyone who listens mostly to radio should check out the Blaupunkt Digiceivers, Outstanding FM section. The only thing this unit lacks is a scan funtion,

The unit also has BBE processing builted in. Anyone who has never experience BBE check it out. The BBE processing makes the music come alive. BBE adds a fullness and realism to the music that can't be matched by a loudness switch,or anything else i'ved experienced. BBE is processing is great, and I haven't heard any background noise added to my system while using it.

This is an excellent unit overall. It has all the features I need, except for an auto scan. The sound quality is outstanding and the BBE makes a great unit even better. Overall if we could adds the digital FM section of the Blaupunkt this would be a 5 star unit. But I will give it a 4 star rating.

Don't let anyone tell you that Alpine no longer makes great units. Just check out any test review of their headunits in Car Audio & Electronics or Car Stereo Review. Alpine unit in comparison test always finish mostly 1st, or occasionally 2nd, That's no coincendence.
