Strength:

Lots of power when it works

Weakness:

Rarely works without interuption. Worst display of any radio I've owned. Can't be read from mich of an angle or in sunlight.

This is the worst car stereo I've ever owned. It worked OK for a while (except the non-sunlight readable display), then after a while it would quit playing. Turning it off, then on would get it going again, then the display would flicker on and off. I continually have to open and close the front to keep it playing. What a piece of dog doo.

Strength:

Love the rotary knob, 4v preouts, Great sound quality. Who else loves the little X-Bass button that makes your sound slam? Great night display. Love the flip-down face, as it keeps the internals clean from dust and such.

Weakness:

Direct sunlight makes this thing impossible to read.
Treble adjustment doesnt do much.

Overall this product is a great buy, I have recommended this deck to most of my friends when doing upgrades. You gotta love the 4v preouts, they make for a very clear, crisp, tight sound. 47 watts X 4, leaves not too much to be desired for not using an amp to power the speakers. Definately a great German product.

Houston made me go out and buy new speakers to replace the OEM's cause they couldnt keep up. Using a Jensen amp for rear subs, and this deck can crack out those frequencies pretty accurately.

Strength:

this unit has a very cool display, and makes the factory speakers sound great if you choose to stay with them.

Weakness:

very hard to see display in direct sunlight

for the price/performance ratio, you cant beat this unit. I paid 145.00 for it on ebay, and it was new in box. Never used. I would recomend this unit to anyone looking for high quality and low price.

Strength:

Convenient knob control during evening driving.
Plays CD-R without skipping.
Various bass control settings + 47wx4 power makes factory speaker suddenly sounds much better.
Big multicolor display pleasant to look at.
Radio station naming function

Weakness:

No romote capability which other Blaupunkt receivers have.
Lacking high frequency control.(5 level treble setting doesn't sound any difference)

Paid $117 including shipment on egghead.com, top notch quality at this price range.

Strength:

Love that knob! I had been looking for a knob controlled CD player with changer capability for about 2 months when I came across the Blaupunkt. I went with the Houston because of the power and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of bass this unit produces - even with the stock 7 year-old speakers. The flip down face for CD access is pretty cool too. I would have to say it's most impressive at night due to the multi-colored display. The VU meter control is seemingly endless and station naming is a neat trick also. I love the power, versatility of adding a changer in the future, the great display and, of course, the knob.

Weakness:

Can't see that great display during the day. Virtually impossible.

Paid $150 on eBay in February 2000. Prices are have dropped slightly since. I highly recommend. In fact, I'm buying another as mine was just stolen 2 weeks ago!

Had mostly Pioneers growing up (not that I'm completely grown up even now). I like the Blaupunkt more than any Pioneer I've owned. I doubt the sound is much different - at least to my ear - but I like the well-thought features of the Blau - and, of course, that wonderful knob!

Strength:

Very well built, obvious from a German company. I bought it for my girlfriend's car and she loves it. I tested it myself a couple of times and it is indeed a nice player. It has more bass than anything I have ever seen. I like the mute button too.

Weakness:

None major. Maybe for the location of the seek buttons and the fact it can't play CD-RWs. I personlly would not buy it for myself because I like Pioneer and the ability to have more control over my music. Not many settings in the Blaupunkt player like the EQ in Pioneer. Plus Pioneer can play any CD you throw in it (CD, CD-R, CD-RW).

Paid $145 for it from eBay. Very nice-firm buttons and I love the display at night. The rottery knob makes like easy along with the ability to name your radio stations. Cool! Very very strong bass even when on lowest ExtraBass setting. Its nice that it also has the Changer controller built in for feature expansion.

Strength:

This is an awesome receiver with the usual outstanding Blaupunkt quality. It has a really user-friendly interface and the dial is just ingenius.

Weakness:

It is almost impossible to see the faceplate when it is in direct sunlight, but this is no biggy. However, it looks awesome at night. I haven't seen a better looking receiver yet.

I would definately recommend this receiver to anybody that likes bright colors and a sharply designed display. If you want a boring old display, this isn't the one for you. However, if you like high quality sound with awesome quality such as Blaupunkt, this is the receiver for you. It doesn't cost that much if you shop around. I think it's list price is $229, but I bought it from Onsale.com for $128.

Similar Products Used:

Pioneer DEH-2100. The pioneer had the EEQ which I liked, but it was a lot more complicated and took longer to use and wasn't nearly as nice looking as the Blaupunkt. Also, the blaupunkt puts out a much clearer sound from the internal amp.

Strength:

Great value, easy to use, great features, noticeable boost in sound quality using only the built in amplifier on stock speakers, useful display, rotary adjuster can be used for adjustment of nearly every feature

Weakness:

none that I can think of offhand

I love it. The Houston is the top of that model range, but it`s basically identical in appearance to the Boston and Key West, only it has cd change controls and a couple of other little things. The head unit alone boosted the quality of the sound on my stock speakers, and it has a very user friendly display and controls. The rotary controller can be used for adjusting just about every function the unit has. I bought it for $155 on ebay and it was worth every penny. I also have a set of Blaupunkt 6.5" 3-ways to go with it.
I don`t have anything to compare it to, but it was a notable improvement over the stock head unit.
I bought mine on ebay as well, for $155 brand new. This unit offers one of the best values for a high quality head unit. Before I bought it, I had heard mixed reviews about Blaupunkt's reputation, but I am happy to confirm that I now a Blaupunkt believer.

Strength:

Great price, terrific features, easy to use buttons. I especially like the flipdown face and the easy to read display. Sounds great with my factory speakers.

Weakness:

None.

I paid only $132.00 on Ebay and it was brand new in the box. I would recommend it to anybody who wants a very high quality cd player for low price. Blaupunkt is really a excellent car audio company and I hope to buy some component speakers from them soon.
