Model Reviewed: Nevada RDM 168 BLUE

Strength:

I liked the fact that is had a different color available. It jazzed up my car a little bit. When I redid the rest of the body work and interior work, I had an accent color to work with. the built in EQ is a nice touch. Easy to read display with easy controls. The features work excellent. Overall the product is a winner in my books.

Weakness:

It has one downside, the menu is sometimes hard to concentrate on while drive.

I would highly recommend the German cd player. A high quality piece of work. My price was $239, with wireless remote, 4 pre-amp outputs, cd changer adapter, and auxilury input plug. Retail price for all would be...$352. Over $100 savings total. Black is cheaper.

It is a real step up from the 2 JVC decks i have worked with. Much better then SONY.

Strength:

For a car receiver, it presents the music very cleanly. Excellent Mids and Lows.

Weakness:

So clean, you'll need new speakers (start with tweeters).
Break-in period.

For $240 from crutchfield (excellent customer support by the way), I couldn't be happier. When I first installed it, it didn't sound very involving. The highs and upper mid-bass sounded rolled off and muffled. After about a month of listening (because I only listen to the receiver on my way to work), everything opened up. The Nevada makes beautiful bass right out of the box and the highs and midrange are clean without being shrill. Once you figure out how to properly set the tuner (do not use Hi-Cut), the FM reception is excellent. A local college station that I like sounds louder and clearer than my old factory stereo. The detatchable face is very easy to use, although the volume knob is a little weird for people with big hands (I'll get over it). The CD player sounds better than my friend's Sony (with D-Bass). This receiver is fine for classical, jazz, classic rock, and synthesizer music (the latter two sound the best). The Nevada is an excellent receiver with an efficient display. If you want a disco-dashboard, you can order one with a colored faceplate.

Compared it with my friend's Sony (with D-Bass) installed in a new Ford Explorer.

Strength:

Has a great button layout, is very versitile for any car application, has phenominal sound. VERY NICE!

Weakness:

None

The cd player has a price form $280-$350.00 I only payed $195 for it on ebay; new in box. I would recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a good durable cd player for their vehicle. A lot of people told me it was too nice for my car but I bought it anyway. It is equipped for a power antenna and a cellular mute aswell.

after comparing other makes, the nevada was outstanding, the tuneris easy to use when driving, no fumbling. the am is outstanding,
and fm is clean. i don't listen to cds in the car much and that
wasn't important. i drive somewhat long distances in my bmw and
wanted to replace the oem alpine which was junk. the aux input
is a plus for my scanner and cassette player. if your looking
for a good radio this is the one. it even has 3 local and 3 dx
settings.the different models alaska and florida are similar
but don't have all features, the display colors are green for
florida, orange for nevada, and blue for alaska. alaska and
nevada have aux input. all have the new codem digiceiver tuner.

Strength:

Good sound.
Very easy to install (minimal soldering).
Looks cool.

Weakness:

After a long run (maybe after 45 min +) the face becomes very hot. When you take the CD out the CD is very hot and makes me wonder if it is OK for the CD to get so hot. Moreover, when the module starts to get hot, the CD starts to skip occasionally. his could be annoying, especially if you are on a long trip.
Also the CD eject stopped working correctly after a couple of months. he CD comes out maybe less than half an inch now. I have to literally pull the CD out. Quite annoying.
Oh, and probably a personal preference, but the power antenna stay up when I am listening to a CD.

Overall, I am happy with the product for the price I paid ($150 @ Crutchfiled). I instaled it myself and only took me less than an hour (this was the first time I ever installed a car audo myself).

But maybe because the old Sony I had was such a nice player that I am not fully satisfied with the Blaupunkt. I would love to find the bastard that stole it and I'd even buy it back from him (that's how much I liked it).
So, in comparison, I see Blaupunkt as less impressive.

For the price it's alright, but I would not say that it is impressive (kind of like the reviews Hyundai Tiburon gets in carreview.com "the car is fine for the price...").

Similar Products Used:

Sony Xplaud (it was medium level piece I had for about a month. The Blaupunkt sounds much better. Got rid of it ASAP.

Sony ??? came with the car when I bought it but got stolen. Don't know the model (if I did, I would buy that again). Sounds good, rarely skips, the module dsd not get excessively hot and best of all, my power antenna stayed down when I am listening to the CD.
