Strength:

5V Pre out No Built in amp Rotary NOB for volume, push button for track. Sharp characteristics ESN Motorized face/non-detactable daisy chain cd changers Incriments of 1 for volume 0 - 80.

Weakness:

People say the sun light puts a good glare on the face, not denying, but there isn't anything to really "look" at. All the functions are visible if not you can "hear" the difference. I don't care for visual effects, I bought it sound awesome, not to look pretty. If there is 1 weakness, it's the bass level 1 - 16, but not 0/off ? But you most likely have bass level independant with the amplifier.

5504 Excellent unit. Simple, easy functions and excellent sound output. 5504, RF800A4 & fanatic p's, rf100a2 & (2) Alpine Type R 12's SVC. Very very clear sound. You're buying an Eclipse because of sound quality, not because you want dancing dolphins on your screen.

Strength:

It's an Eclipse; 8 Volt; Clean look; Display function that blacks out/displays only track no. and time after ~5 seconds (good for rolling incognito so as to not attract a lot of attention and keeper the car stereo jackers away); red "OPEN" led as opposed to green on everything else; Reads track titles; Remote feels good and has that illuminating button; ability to add the Commander (which I hopefully will be getting soon); as for sound, I listen to most of my music flat, so I don't adjust the bass/mids/highs too much, but the 8 volt makes a difference.

Weakness:

Nob Control: Need to push down for volume, volume goes up in incrememts of 4; spec analyzer accuracy, but not a big deal.

I was looking at this model way back when it came out. But, decided to go with a Pioneer with parametric EQ built in. It lived for 4 years w/ a face replacement at 2 years (thanks, Jerk...to the person who stole it). I thought it was time, so I did some research and decided on this one. It's an older model, so I got it fairly cheap. I popped it in in about an hour and damn...such a difference. That 8 volt vs. my old 2.7 is awesome. Some people comment on skipping and not reading cheap CDs, but I've never had that problem. I burn on crappy $7/spool CDs and they play fine. I've put in scratched CDs and new CDs and it's all good. They scratched ones skip where they're suppose to and all, but they still play, so that's that. This not all that feature rich, but it does what it's suppose to and does it well. Also, I like how none of the buttons are that rubber covering crap. That's another reason I replaced my old headunit. I was getting holes in all my buttons; all thrashed up and stuff. My other comments are below. I don't want to repeat them. Also, I had a chance to Call Fujitsu Ten to ask about a wiring issue. Tech support will answer your questions. The guy I spoke to was pretty much a jerk, but I didn't want to make his attitude even worse by being an ass, so yeah, I hope no one has to ever talk to that guy. If you want to get service on the thing, it's a $167 flat fee. That's $17 more than I paid for it, so I probably will never fix this thing if it breaks. But for those of you who are attached or will be attached, that's the price. While I was searching online for specs and other info, I didn't really find that much info that helped me out. If any of you that are reading need specs from the manual or any other info, let me know. I'll email them to you. That's about it. Oh and you can hook up that Commander thing to this unit. Dope.

8V output is by far awesome.

Weakness:

when the sun hits it you can't see anything on it.

This product kicked ass, that's all i have to say. I have ran different subs with it and it feeds power to the most power hungry amp. I would definitely reccommend this deck to anyone out there it is worth the money. I'm glad I activated my ESN because some dumbass stole it out of my civic, so now it is useless to that ass. Lots of features and very cool display

ESN Security, Quality, and Sound....Excellent sound, especially when played through a Soundstream amp into some MB Quart Mids and Highs...very bright sounding.

Weakness:

This unit is known to skip even new CD's. This is not some phenomenon...it is a defect that Fujitsu Ten has posted a notice about. The units have to be sent back to be repaired but once the repair is made they play like a charm.

As most of you have put in your reviews this is a really nice unit....of course its Eclipse. I used this unit for a period of a year and a half before it was stolen out of my civic. So some lucky shmuck just got himself a nice, expensive, paper weight.

Really really need those instructions please...

I recently purchased the Eclipse 5504 head unit off ebay and the last owner misplaced the instruction manual. I was wondering if you had a copy laying around or on PDF form or something. I would really appreciate if I could get a copy of it. Thank you.

Strength:

Excelent sound! I can hear things I never heard in my music before! Makes music seem as if it's live and all around you! Little tweaking needed for great sound! Great bright display and excellent use of CD text! Good features like mute, pause, and eclipse knob control! Easy to live with which helps keep you from looking at it to tweek things and being able to drive.

Weakness:

Picky Picky Picky. Make sure your cd's are in great condition and that they aren't those cheap CDR's or they might not play. Has no built in amp and requires an external one. Prone to skipping b/c of poor quality or fingerprints cd's.

This is my first Eclipse Deck. I was introduced to Eclipse through a buddy and all he had to do was turn on a cd. I love Eclipse and they will be the only decks I will every purchase. I have a 99 Prelude with 5 1/4 Eclipse Components up front, 6X9 Eclipse 3-Ways in the back, and one 10 inch Kicker Solo Baric running off a 760 Watt sony amp. The sub setup is definetly my weakest link and am currently in the process of replacing it with a JL Audio 300/2 amp and 2 JL Audio 10inch W0's. I have a two channel eclipse amp running my speakers b/c the deck doesn't have an internal amp. I love this deck! Awesome sound and can't wait to get the subs to keep up with my mids and highs. I have noticed that the deck is extremly picky though. It doesn't like certain CDR's that I burn but Memorex and Maxell's seem to work fine. It either doesn't read em or it skips. If a cd isn't perfect than it tends to skip a little. Other than that I love it! I love not haveing to tweek with levels and eq's to get it to sound good. At the zero levels it just sounds great! I recomend this deck especially if you can get it cheap! I got lucky and feel it was well worth the money.

Strength:

Sounds GREAT! The highs were the biggest difference I noticed. No distortion at max vol. EQ display is cool. Has mid freq. adjustment (bass/mid/treb) Has the ability to have GPS and voice commander. The part that I like the most is that GPS directions come on the screen which is a single DIN and not a huge screen.

Weakness:

Display is useless when the sun hits it even slightly. I found the Alpine remote more convient then the NOB remote. No BBE :( Sounded like I had more bass with the alpine 7940.

I recently upgraded from an Alpine 7940 to an Eclipse 5504 headunit. Before I talk about the headunit, let me list what I have: Front: MB Quart Q Rear: MB Quart Comp. Sub: 3 JL 10W6 AMP: Sub: Rockford Punch Power 500 4-chan: Kenwood 767 (long story why I''m using this amp...will upgrade soon) Wires: Stinger Dream Series RCAs and Stinger speaker wire Overall, the 5504 is definetly a great headunit, no doubt about it. But there were a few things I noticed with the Alpine 7940. The Eclipse display is a lot nicer with the eq diaplay and other stuff. But the display is completly useless when the sun hits it. Sound wise, I noticed the highs were a lot clearer, but I did notice a drop in the volume in the subs. I personally really like the BBE in the Alpine, although Eclipse does have a loundness feature, but it is not the same as BBE. My major disappointment in the Eclipse was that it was not as loud as the Alpine. I would think the 8V preouts would actually give me more sound then Alpine''s 4v preout. If anyone has delt with both units, Eclipe''s max vol (80) is similar to Alpine''s (~27-30) where 35 is max. One feature I use a lot is the mute since I live in a city and cops don''t really like noise pollution :). With the alpine, I can immediatly lower the volume by pressing mute on the remote. With the eclipse, I haveto hold the mute button in for a lil bit and the volume cuts 100%. The Alpine would slowly (although relativly quickly) raise the volume back to normal when I would un-mute. The eclipse just puts the vol. back right away. Don''t know if there would be any long term damage to speakers that way. Also, the most important feature of a remote is the volume control. The Alpine has a direct button for volume control. With the eclipse NOB remote, you have to press the NOB in and then turn the NOB. I''ve had problems controling the volume when I press the NOB on the remote b/c of the volume delay and would accidentally control the bass. Speaking of bass, the eclipse bass controls 100Hz. The alpine lets me adjust what bass freq. I want adj. on the bass control (60Hz-100Hz in 10Hz intervals). The 100Hz is a standard cross over freq for subs, but I have the cross-over for my subs at ~80Hz. I like the way the text comes up on the eclipse better then the Alpine. The tilting screen is usefull, but not when the sun is out.

SOUND QUALITY, ease of use, ESN, 8V pre-out, attractive display, excellent radio reception, back-lit buttons when headlights are on, remote control, plays my CDRs perfectly.

Weakness:

Personally I don't like the new green flouresence display; I prefer the old whitish blue appearance. Display can be washed out in direct sunlight.

I got this unit on sale plus a $100 off coupon, total of $130 saving. At such deal there is no regret. The unit plays perfectly without skipping. I supposed Eclipse has taken care of this problem on 2000 model, or I'm just lucky. Highly highly recommend. This HU is what high-end stereo is all about.

None, can't think of anything yet.

First, I read alot about this deck before I buy it. I hear a lot of complaints about Eclipse CD skipping. I drove my 300ZX to work everyday with bumps and turns and the CD does not skip at all. I love the display it is so nice and there are so many feature with this deck. Well worth the money. If you have the money go get one of this baby go it it, this is the best deck I ever bought.
