Model Reviewed: 2001 Kenwood Z828

Strength:

Looks and sound.

Weakness:

Display has messed up twice on two different units. Design flaw with the unit. It is aggravating and will make you extremely angry!!!

At first glance (and I have to admit that I am guilty of this also) this looks like an incredible unit. It does look great, but there is a big problem with this unit. I originally bought it in June and in less than a month, had problems with it. The display was distorted and you couldn''t even see the icons for all the distortion. Any animated sequence on the unit was messed up. I contacted Kenwood and found out that it is a problem that they are having with alot of the Z828s that are out. I contacted the guy I bought it from and he agreed to replace it. I received the new one on July 5 and have had it in my 4Runner since. Today is September 26 and guess what, it has done it again. Same problem. Distored display will all kinds of interference. I emailed the guy I bought it from and hope that he will replace it with another brand and model. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT!!!! It has a very good sound and many features, but this problem will piss you off beyond belief as it has me. The MP3 feature is also very cumbersome in that you cannot go directly a song (ie punch in 140 to go to song 140, you have to scroll through 140 songs) and the random feature randomly plays the same 15-20 songs on a disc with 150+ songs. I repeat, DO NOT BUY THIS HEAD UNIT!!!! YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!! When a Kenwood rep tells you that there is a problem, you know you are in trouble. Don''t be tempted by the good looks, go with a more reliable unit. Trust me. Too much money for a unit that will break in a few months.

Strength:

Nice seek time from song to song

Weakness:

Sucks for the file browser, lists as one huge playlist and takes a while if your song starts with an S then you gotta scroll to the bottom of the list being in risk of an accident.

Well I owned this deck for less then a month. Very nice layout and all but i noticed it wouldn't read all media I inserted into it. I then came to find out the cd player was on recall due to a lense issue so i sent the cd player back in exchange for a Rockford Fosgate RFX9400 and lemme tell ya, i'm glad I did that because this deck is one hell of a unit. Rockford finally came around with their cd players, got a new designer and beefed up their new units. I'm very impressed and especially with the file browsing capabilities. If your huge into mp3s, wanna spend money and is a huge audiophile i recommend the Rockford Fosgate RFX-9400 indash mp3 player. If you dont have the money to spend i recommend shooting for the Kenwood MP-8017 which is also a nice deck. Not quite the cleanest sound as rockford fosgates, but it does the trick if you have low end audio. All and all the Z828 woulda been a badazz deck if it worked properly, but for the short period i used it i'm far more impressed with Rockfords sound quality.
