Model Reviewed: Pioneer DEH-P3000

Strength:

Powerful amplifier, excellent EQ settings, easy installation, good radio.

Weakness:

Display weak in bright sunlight, the upgrade 3100 has a brighter display. The AM section of the radio lacks AM stereo capability and could be more sensitive.

This unit matches well with my 1994 GMC Sonoma pick-up. The versatile EQ settings allow me to adjust my factory speakers (4) for the best sound. The FM section of the radio is on par with my factory Delco but the Pioneer has better high end response. The AM section of the Pioneer is not as good as the Delco. The Delco unit has better AM sensitivity and also has AM Stereo whereas the Pioneer is mono only. Overall this is an excellent Head Unit for the money. In my case this Unit was a gift

Strength:

This unit has performed very well. I spent hours reaserching car audio receivers, and found that Pioneer products were recommended as a good value for the money. This has proved to be true. I am not a purist, my wish was to upgrade from cassette to CD. I purchased this unit over the less expensive 2100 because it provided an adjustable EQ. I'm glad I did. The preset EQ's all seem to favor a heavy bass sound. Being (ahem)older(43)I enjoy a brighter sound the custom EQ provides this ability. I installed this unit in my Ford Ranger leaving the factory speakers. The EQ has allowed me to adjust the sound to my taste. It has sufficiant power, and clarity to make my ride to and from work enjoyable

Weakness:

It was hard to learn the controls. This unit does more than I need, but in order to get the adjustable EQ I had to learn all of the other stuff. This isnt much of a shortcoming. I quickley learned which buttons not to touch!

If you are happy with simple bass and treble controls then buy the less expensive 2100. For me it was worth the extra money to upgrade to the 3100. I would recommend this unit to anyone who simply wants to enjoy music in their car...no diassapointments. I don't know much about "competition car audio", and make no reccommendation about this unit for such use. I paid 189.00 plus tax at Best Buy. I saw this unit on Crutchfeild for less, but I wanted to support the local store that allowed me the oppurtunity to "push the buttons". I didn't buy the extended warranty. Mistake? time will tell!

Strength:

The price was good. The features were good for a budget cd player. Not hard to use at all.

Weakness:

I dont like the the equalizer switch, tough to use while driving.

I only paid $139 for mine so I think it is a great bargain for what you get. With 22 watts rms you wont need an amp for regular speakers unless you plan to go competition.

Strength:

Nice display(looks really nice at night),good sound,good price,pretty easy to install,unlike others...I think the
volume control and buttons are easy ???

Weakness:

none really. a machine screw was missing from the unit
which I picked up for 11 cents at the hardware store. the
install directions gave none for the alarm system (how to
install ---Crutchfield tech told me how). the foreward
button on the cd player is a "quick press" (instructions
says under .5 seconds)

note--- I purchased the 3100 which is the newer upgrade
of the 3000. The stereo sounds good.....i've played
classical as well as rock with my factory speakers (new
2000 Ford Ranger). I researched also on the internet
and the view seemed to be this is a "good" cd/radio for
a minimum/moderate price. I paid 186.00 from Crutchfield.
I went to Walmart and they have the same unit with a
different model number but it was more. Crutchfield
supplied instructions for install myself, which were a
little difficult to follow, but I managed to get it in
fine (called tech support 4 times). The general consus
seems to be the display is hard to view. Not true for me.
I have a medium tent on the windows that cuts some of the
sun out though. I think I would still purchase from
crutchfield and do it myself. Called Circuit City and
the price was also 189.00 (free install), but there was
an adapter and harness which brought the price up to
230.00. Crutchfield didn't charge more for the harness/adaptor. Hope this helps you.
I'd rate it about a 4.75

Strength:

Bright display, good sound, good EQ, plays CD-R's (Definitely a plus!), lots of functions.

Weakness:

Unit completely turns off when you take a CD out (that drives me crazy at night, I have to turn my interior lights on to put a new disc in), Buttons feel a little cheap, wish it had a volume knob instead of buttons.

It's worth the money, you get a nice deck for the money.

non-backlit display

I paid $190 for this excellent piece of car audio libido! i just got it tonight, and i am already loving it! the sound is absolutely outstanding, and the dual preouts are great for hooking it up to my amps! with the exception of the display brightness, this is an amazing unit!

Strength:

Very bright display that is very readable during the day in bright sunlight!!! Don't let these other guys fool you! Then again, they must not have tinted windows. :)

Weakness:

Display shuts off completely when ejecting a disc. At night, this makes it hard to find the disc slot to load another disc. Why did Pioneer not add the orange lead wire (to lighting switch terminal) to this unit? Older units had this feature and also kept the display on at night, even if the unit was off!!!

$199 paid for this.
