Strength:

SQ is excellent!!!! Silver faceplate has a very conservative look to it. Offers time alignment (excellent feature) and angle adjustments. A great reciever by Pioneer!!!!

Weakness:

I believe the main weakness is that you CANNOT operate most of the reciever's functions without the remote. I believe Pioneer did that to give the reciever a simplistic style, but underneath the simplicity there offers a superior reciever. Great thought, but stupid ideal. It's really a pain, especially when you lose or break the remote. Most of your functions are inaccessible.

My prediction is that they will make a new P1R for the 2001 or 2002 model using Organic EL display like the P900R and that it will be set at a cheaper price than the 1999-2000 P1R (like the other 2000 model recievers). I bought mines for $500 new. It was pretty hard for me to find that price because this reciever is so high in demand, but I really wanted it so I got it. I actually like the P900R better because you have full access to all the functions from the faceplate and the display on the P900R is surperb. Don't get me wrong but the P1R display is also excellent, compared to other recievers. And you cannot complain about the SQ in this reciever. I think Pioneer shouldn't offer DFS+ or any kind of alarm on thier reciever except for the blinking lights once you remove the faceplate. When I first got it, I thought geee!!! this is a great feature for any reciever to have, but now, it just takes up space of what other things could have been there. If you paid $500-$800 for any reciever you should get an alarm with a remote, not CD reciever add on alarm. An alarm is a great investment for any car. But as for this reciever goes, it's an excellent reciever!!!! I love mines!!!

Strength:

Excellent feature - EQ, X-over, Surround sound, digital delay, etc included in a single din unit. Excellent design and built quality. Great tuner reception.

Weakness:

Display washes out in sunlight, DSP setting can only operate from the remote control. Only one color selection. Text scrolling cumbersome.

Price Paid: $495
Current system: DEX P1R running in STD mode, pair of MB Quart & McIntosh componet speakers.USAacoustic amp.
In my opinion, the best single disc player on the market. You will not need any other signal processor (EQ, x-over, dsp, etc). The crossover is one of my favorite features. You can set them from the seat. The adjustable slopes on the x-over is great. The built-in 13 band EQ is good, but have at least 2 more bands. The remote is more user friendly, tnan the buttons on the faceplate.

An almost perfect CD player for me. If it had a 1/3 octave EQ, it would be perfect. I also think the price is very reasonable, considering all the top notch signal processing features available.

Strength:

Excellent value - all the features you could ever want: EQ, X-over, Surround sound, digital delay, etc.

Weakness:

EQ is only 13 bands, display washes out in sunlight, knob-type volume control would have been nice

Price Paid: $500
Current system: DEX P1R running in Pro mode, pair of Aurasound MR6.1 separates, (2) Avalon LE12's, Crossfire CFA1000D mono amp, PPI PC450.

In my opinion, the best CD player on the market. This CD player has more features than anything out there. You will not need any other signal processor (EQ, x-over, dsp, etc) unless you need a 1/3 octave EQ for competition. The crossover is one of my favorite features. You can set them from the seat instead of having to go to your trunk to make adjustments. I love the adjustable slopes on the x-over, it is variable from -12db to -36db/octave in pro mode. You would have to pay HUGE bucks for an aftermarket crossover with this kind of ability. The built-in 13 band EQ is good, but I would have preferred at least 2 more bands, one each for the upper and lower frequencies - a 3 band parametric EQ with adjustable slopes would have been nice (I believe Pioneer's DEQ9200 has them) or a 1/3 octave EQ. The auto EQ feature does a nice job of setting your system up to play nice without needing an RTA. I haven't really played with the digital delay much, but I would expect excellent results - this feature would also cost big bucks (have you priced Alpine's time delay processor lately?). Unlike some people, I like Pioneer's big and bulky "smart" remotes. I prefer them over those "credit card" remotes, which are not very ergonomically friend to the fingers. Pioneer's remote is fairly large, but I use it for all controls - I hardly ever used the buttons on the faceplate. I think the remote is must more user friendly, especially considering the buttons on the faceplate are so small.

An almost perfect CD player for me. If it had a 1/3 octave EQ, it would be perfect. I also think the price is very reasonable, considering all the top notch signal processing features available.

Strength:

Integration, versatility, flexability... and Auto EQ ROCKS!

Weakness:

Display washes out in sunlight, remote

This unit solved a big problem for me.. it combines DSP, EQ and a very versatile head unit into a single DIN slot, which will make things easier when I resell my vehicle.

On the upside, once you've taken the time to set your crossover points (and subwoofer phase) correctly, the AutoEQ function will pretty much make good speakers sound great, and great speakers sound fabulous. I'm driving Boston Acoustics Pro 6.5's in the front, Boston Acoustics RM-6 speakers in the rear doors, and a MTX Blue thunder 10" sub and Apline V-12 amps in my 99 Contour, and the system consistently gets "wows" from everyone who rides in the car.

On the downside, anyone who has used Pioneer's stand alone DSP, the DEQ-9200, is sure to be disappointed by the DSP section of this unit. It falls short on a number of fronts, including not having enough bands of EQ (you really need something above 12K), only being able to adjust each EQ band in increments of +/- 2db, and not displaying the AutoEQ curve on the display. The only other gripes that I have with the unit are that the display washes out in direct sunlight (which Pioneer's new Organic EL display addresses nicely) and the fact that there should be some indicator to let you know when the battery on the remote needs replacing. Until I got used to the way the remote behaved when the batteries were low, I thought it was broken.)

Overall, if you're not competing but are serious about the sound in your car, this unit will not disappoint.

This is a great CD player/tuner. It's faceplate removable and has a multitude of functions. I owned the predecessor to this unit. The prior unit had too many button on the faceplate and really had to be operated by the remote. This unit has far fewer buttons on the faceplate and too many button on the remote. The good news is that you really don't need the remote after the unit has been set up. The best features of the unit is that it has the crossovers built in so you don't need external crossovers. The other best feature is the auto-EQ function. The unit comes with a microphone. You tape the mike where you want the sound optimized and the unit emits pink noise and equalizes itself. It really works! My only complaint is the faceplate. The display is somewhat busy and the colors of the unit really don't match anything. I give tihs unit four stars. Had they designed the faceplate better to match a car's interior and made the display less busy, there would be 5 stars.

The Premier DEX-P1R is a great unit. You can get many other higher-end models, which may offer better sound quality, but this unit is rare. The upper level Pioneer Premier has all the bells and whistles you need for a great sounding system, it has high quality D/A converters and processing for sound that rivals some of the best home equipment, not tomention it doesn't look to bad either. For those looking for the best sound out of an extremely simple system this unit is for you. My installation consist of the P1R, three amps and my speaker system, no other cross-overs, eq's or processors. So for the simplton in all of us this unit makes for nice clean sysem integrated.
As stated below, this unit has internal cross-overs with adjustable slopes, a 1/3 octave EQ and if you so choose a surround processor, which actually works well. The P1R even lets you chose between two different boot-up modes, Pro or Normal, with the later offering all the surround modes and toys, and the PRO mode designed for all out sound quality. For the money you can't beat it. The MSRP from Pioneer is $1200, most shops sell it for $900..you can find it online as I did for under $600.

While this unit is clearly one of the finest on the market due to the fact that it combines the functionality of a multitude of units (signal processor, crossover, eq, etc). The auto-eq is a phenomenal feature that is hard to beat. The tuner is solid with many features to play with. I could go on about the positives of this unit but like many, I thought I would throw in my $.02 about where improvement can be made (just in case Pioneer is listening).
Similar to another reviewer, the silver face on this unit is gaudy. While I was surprized how well it looked in my black interior I lean towards understatement and it still stands out too much. The remote is WAY too big. I know we have the technology to put computers on a pinhead and all that but I think the remote could be a little smaller and still be ergonomically correct.

Now enough for looks, the BIGGEST complaint that I would have about the unit is the fact that if you have a bi-amped 3-way front stage you essentially can't use the DEX-P1R in PRO mode. The standard mode is still better than anything on the market, but the pro mode has some features (specifically time alignment) that are very nice.

Over all I give it a 4 simply because I am hard to please and I think 5 should represent the absolute not the attempt.

At first I wasn't use to the silver color but now I much prefer it over the common black. It is a beautiful and elegant piece of equipment. Turn it on and the display dances. For the price it is much cheaper than buying a seperate deck, EQ, and crossover not to mention the fact that it has more options than any of those three combine. Three seperate components will also cause more noise and distortion. This deck can be highly fine tune. I've had mine since the first week it came out and I still don't see any other decks out there that is better.
