I have the CDX-C880 and if I turn off the BBE it will play like the 780. one word, NO!This deck lags. The deck certainly gives a nice amount of features for the money, but in actual performance it lags. The alpine 7840 model with the M dac converter kicks the crap outta that deck even though it doesn't have that 3rd 4 volt preamp output. The higher mid end alpine decks can kill my CDX-C880. I now regret having spent the money on Mobile ES. Alpine will always play louder and cleaner than Sony. I run my 880 at 90% volume with level 2 BBE and an alpine deck not even close to reaching thr red zone of it's volume limit will always play louder and cleaner. The Burr Brown DA converter is good, but not as good as Alpines M dac converter

I just bought the cdx-C780. And It is pretty good.. I compared it to Alpine and I got a friend who has the 239$ Alpine and it doesn't even have RCA's?
One of my major complaints about CDX-C780 is that on the radio when you have the FM reciver IF mode in wide and it starts to Recive even a strong signal with just a little bit of static it starts to roll off the hi Freqs very noticably
and it very annoying,my soultion is to leave it in Narrow mode which doesnt even sound as good. Id rather hear the reciver get static than have my hi's disapear on me.If any one else has this problem or a soultion please let me know. Other than that its a good Cd player with good features.

This is (IMHO) the best entry-level high-end CD head unit as far as bang-for-the-buck is concerned. I've listened to this unit side-by-side with the high end Clarions, Alpines and Eclipses that cost over $700. Not to say that the Sony was "better" than those top-of-the-line units, the Sony was not noticeably inferior. Although it did lack some of the fancier features and a famous D/A, the sound quality was comparable (using a Pheonix Gold amp and Boston Pro speakers). At $255 shipped from www.carmedia1.com, it's probably the best deal around. It comes with 3 sets of outputs (volume adjustable sub output). If I had $900 to blow, I'd definitely swap it for the CDX-C90, but I don't and this unit does just fine.

Truly a piece of junk. Replaced a Panasonic that cost about the same but the face plate missing. The sony (junk) skips all the time, compared never with my old Kenwood, and occasionally with my Panasonic. Does not play scratched disks worth a damn (compared to the other two). Has lots of useless features because I only listen to the radio. Will smash into pieces and send back to Sony - the last sony product I buy - EVER. Don't waste your money!
