Model Reviewed: CDC635

Strength:

Compact size, looks good, and allows features like 72 disc title memory and 6-disc random (though you probably need a matching deck to get these features). Plays scratched discs without much of a problem. In my opinion, a disc changer is essential for any car audio system. Forget about having to switch discs while driving, or screwing around with those stupid visor sleeves.

Weakness:

Takes kind of long to change discs; skips in sub-zero weather; after a couple of years, doesn't always eject on the first try; won't play most CD-Rs I've tried, and the one's that do play tend to skip like crazy (tip: sometimes, repeatedly trying to play a CD-R will eventually make it work). Other reviewers have stated that theirs will play burned discs no problem; with mine, that is not the case.

The Clarion 635 is my first cd changer. I purchased a package deal from a local audio store; for about $600 Can. I got the changer, the Clarion ARX7370 cassette receiver, and the Clarion EHQ5100 processor. I'm still happy as hell with that deal! Initially, I was the least impressed with the changer. It seemed to skip too easily and without real provocation. However, this improved with time; the more I used it, the less it skipped. It only skips now during cold weather, which is 3 or 4 months out of the year in Ontario. I've also heard complaints about the cost of spare cartridges. For me, this was a non-issue, since I managed to scam an extra cartridge by exchanging the changer for a new one, but keeping the magazine! I'm fairly happy with my purchase, since it matches the rest of my Clarion gear. I have the feeling there are better one's out there for the price, but I can't say since I haven't used them.

Strength:

Price, small size and reliability.

Weakness:

Kind of slow on the disc-to-disc time, but thats what the single disc player up front is for, right?

My Third piece of Clarion's Pro Audio line and they've all been EXCELLENT. This changer has been knocked around in 3 different cars - from a '68 bug to my 96 Camry, using two different decks and it has never skipped, jammed or missed a beat. Just another feather in Clarion's cap! Well worth it!!!!

Model Reviewed: 1997 Jetta TDI

Strength:

Performance, Price, Quality, and the Clarion name. Basically everything.

Weakness:

I can't really think of a bad quality of the unit itself. Extra magazines are about $30, but I picked one up at Best Buy for $15 once.

This changer is great. My 97 Jetta was pre-wired for this changer, so this was the only choice other than the VW changer (Basically this, repackaged..). It doesn't skip, It will play anything I feed it.. CDRs, disks with moderate scratches, it plays just about anything without a flaw. At about half the price of the unit from VW it is a great player. I've had it for about two years now and the unit has given me no problems at all (I live in Illinois, where we see temperatures in either extreme -10 to 110 degrees.)

I have a JVC 12 disc in my other car, which also plays very well, but it is FM modulated so the sound quality is just not there.

Strength:

Affordable, easy to install.

Weakness:

None

This is my first cd changer and so far it's treated me right. I've got a 1996 Saab 900 and installation took 30 minutes! It mated to the prewired harness without needing adapters and immediately began working. I test drove it on Maine's bumpy, frost-heaved roads for 2 hours after installation and it didn't skip once. Also tried it with CD-R's to see if other complaints I'd read would hold true with my unit. Nope, no problem playing homemade Cd's either. I can't speak to slow response when switching between discs, but it seems fast enough to me. So far I am extremely pleased.

Strength:

Compact size, low price and easily plugged into my prewired 93 Saab. Has been totally reliable for 3 years, and plays homemade CD-Rs very well.

Weakness:

None really. However, skips can be induced by hitting a right curving exit ramp at illegal speeds (.5 g curve). Magazines are high at about $28 each compared to a Pioneer M30 that I had earlier (magazines $8 each).

I would recommend the CDC635 to anyone, particularly to those who have cars that are prewired and have head units with buttons that will control this and similar Clarion units. This includes 1992-1997 Saabs that have changer controls on the EQ/CD unit. Or if one has a Clarion head unit that will control this unit. I also recommend it if space is a problem.
If $28 is considered steep for a 6-disk magazine and you need lots of them, you may look elsewhere, but the savings on the unit itself over others can buy several magazines. Summary, highly recommended.

Strength:

Great price, easy installation. Doesnt skip. Sounds great. CD Changes quickly. Fits my stock 97 Jetta.

Weakness:

nothing

I think this is a steal and if you have hard to fit car like mine its the only way to go unless you want to spend a grand rewiring your whole system. Ive seen some posts about problems with burned CDs I havent tried that but I will. It could be the burner or the CD blank makers fault as well but Ill try it. Thats not a huge deal killer anyway most of my CDs are store bought. I cant believe how good my stereo sounds with this addition and it cost very little.

Strength:

It changes CD's and is economical

Weakness:

Changes the CDs slow. Sometimes skips on regular CDs, and doesn't even read most CD-R burned CDs

I bought this changer without any knowledge of audio equipment. I hope a reader will make a wiser choice.

Strength:

Ease of installation. (Factory wiring in my '97 Jetta)
You've got to hit something REAL hard to make this player skip.

Weakness:

Kinda slow between discs. Wish you could have a 6 disc (full random) option.

All in all a great product. My Jetta came pre-wired so it was just a plug and play install. I have no complaints with this product and would buy another without hesitation. As for the not reading burned discs... I've never had a problem. Every now and again it gets "lost" if you pause it in the middle of a track (on a burned disc) and it takes a little bit to figure out where it was. Two-thumbs up.
