Pioneer XDV P9 DVD Audio/Video

Pioneer XDV P9 DVD Audio/Video

DESCRIPTION

Presenting a 6-disc changer unlike many others - the XDV-P9. In addition to playing standard audio CD/CDRs, it can handle DVD-video and video-CD discs. Combine it with a Pioneer A/V master unit and you can select and play either audio or video discs. A digital optical output provides Dolby Digital and DTS multi-channel surround when connected with the AVM-P9000R. For further flexibility you can connect the included Remote Eye and use it with a rear-passenger video system. Versatility is this unit's middle name.

Model Reviewed: Pioneer XDV P9

Strength:

6 DVD capability. Quick Access to Changer magazine.

Weakness:

Expensive, Poor Customer support, Proprietary. Product will only support digital when used with Pioneer processor or head unit. It will work with some pioneer head units, but function is very limited and mostly confusing and of little use.

I have owned this product a few months now. I will start by saying it does a decent job playing a DVD and will allow for 2 video connections and one audio (analog) connection out. So far ok, right? The problem starts when you want to add equipment. Most people build a system a piece at a time if on a budget. Some nay be the originating brand, some not, but most people want a choice or flexibility when building a system. With Pioneer, this is not possible. Unless you add Pioneer equipment designed to operate with this unit there is little to no chance that it will work in any configuration other than stand alone, analog only. The product is capable of Dolby 5.1, DTS and so on, but only and I repeat only if you attach Pioneer equipment. The digital output of this product is non-typical and only designed to work with the pioneer processor unit, which costs close to $1000 US. I thought about just getting the processor, only to find out that in order to use it, I would need a Pioneer screen with RGB input. This is, in my opinion a huge disadvantage when building a system. Now you are locked into using only Pioneer equipment and it is expensive, very expensive. Information like this is usually discovered too late, unless you do a lot of investigation before the purchase. Unfortunately, I missed some key points when I purchased the unit. This leaves me with the Pioneer option or simply getting a more compatible product. In closing, I can only suggest that you investigate, download a manual and research before buying. I wanted to build a nice system around a quality changer and each step of the way I have had nothing but disappointment.
