Strength:

Range and Accuracy especially on Ka bands which, where I live, are always cops.

Weakness:

I have yet to see any. If there are things you don't like, it's so programmable you can adjust it to your settings.

If you are seriously considering buying a radar detector and you want the best, then look to the Passport 8500. Without even considering all the jazz and hipe, it is the best damn radar detector money can buy. Check out http://www.radartest.com/ they spend their lives testing out radars and this is where I was convinced. I have used it and it's accuracy and RANGE just amaze me. I've only had it a few weeks and I can confidently say it's the best investment I've made in a long time.

Strength:

Signal meter in expert mode. Volume control. EZ programming and I mean easy

Weakness:

NONE

This is one of the best radar detectors I have ever owned and I've owned a few. The sinal strength meter when in expert mode is awesome and the volume control when set to loud is enough to hear above the stereo system I have in my truck. I've only owned it for a few weeks but it has saved me a couple of times already and the city mode is awesome. There is a lot of false alarms out there especially in the city and this one weeds them out. I'm taking it with me to Oklahoma next month and already feel safe driving over the posted!!!!!

Strength:

Great range and easy programmable features!

Weakness:

Price should be more comparable with bel

Make this short and sweet...have used the New Bel Vector 985 and the newest Valentine One version 1.8. They are all pretty much the exact same!!! The V1 and Passport 8500 have a VERY SLIGHT edge over the new Bel. The arrows are not worth the extra 100+! The bogey counter is usually wrong and it is not nearly as easy to program and doesnt have as many user features as the 8500. Dont wast your $! I suggest the 8500 from experience!

Sensitivity, mounting location options

Took a trip over Memorial Day weekend from Houston to San Antonio and purchased the 8500 to test against my old Escort Solo 5. Needless to say, the 8500 falsed twice as much and did not pick up radar near as good as the old Solo. This went back to Best Buy first thing Monday morning. I've always owned Escort radar detectors and have been most impressed by the old model with the orange light and dial-like strength meter. It never falsed and was very sensitive to radar.

Strength:

Super long detection, software upgrade, SWS ready, easy operation, complete set with cables suction in a case. Auto mode makes it easy to plug and go. minimal false alarms.

Weakness:

I wish they still made them out of metal or steel. I guess in time everything goes to plastic. I also think the standard wire is a little short. I liked the fact that the Valentine one displayed the direction of the detection.

This radar detector is by far the most superior one of them all. My brother once owned a Passport Solo in 1986, and since then I was impressed by Passport so much that I when I was in the market for a radar detector I went straight to the Escort 8500. I was surprised to see that Escort still maintained its name and outstanding performance. I don''t see what the hype of the Valentine One is. The Passport 8500 has far superior detection and has a history of superiority. and to add the V1 and Bell just look and sound plain cheap! If you are going to buy a radar detector to the job, don''t waste your time buying some cheap dinky radars that you will through away in a year, and don''t compare apples to oranges. Do it right and go with Escort.

Everything is perfect! Excellent!!!!

Weakness:

No arrow....^_^ If really need to say....I wish it smaller....

Excellent product! I ever drove to Los Angeles from Arkansas and carry this new toy with me, the result is 100% PERFECT! Most of the speed I drove about 90 miles/hr, Escort 8500 never miss any cops, even some cops hide in some unviewable place, it still got them from a long distance and that really enough to reduce my speed! No matter say, I got no ticket! I ever tried how long Escort 8500 can get K, Ka band, and I almost can''t believe the result, 3 or 4 miles away!!! I hard to saw my friend''s car from that distance. You may ask me how did I test it? Because my friend is CHP, so, we tried it on I-15. Highly recommand Escort 8500! Believe me, don''t trust arrow because we also tested it!

Weakness:

Can''t think of any

For those of you who claim not to be impressed with the 8500, you probably don''t know how radar works (instant on, etc). This thing has save me from a ticket 3 times and I have only had it less than 3 weeks. I love the different modes for reading radar. This thing even saved me over a hill. Remember, the lead dog will get snagged if they have laser or the instant on radar - stay in 2d and you''ll get there fast with enough time to slow down if they''re shooting radar. This is the best radar detector I have ever owned. If you want the best protection - Get one.

After reading all the reviews of this product I expected better performance. My area has lots of hills and I am usually lucky to pick up a cop driving with K radar 3 blocks in advance. I''ve never got several miles of advanced warning like some people claim. It seems to be a excellent product, but its not all its cracked up to be.

Smartcord is awesome. Can be right in front of a cop at night, and he won''t know you have a radar, cuz he can''t see the cord!! Also, great for making long expressway trips. Having the 8500 will save you the money you paid in one month, by not getting pulled over.

Weakness:

No arrows (Just kidding!!) No weaknesses at all.

The 8500 blows away the V1, no questions. Great range with minimal bogus hits. Arrows or no arrows, who needs ''em?? Radartest.com says it best in comparing the two: "But we quickly learned to distrust the bogey counter''s truthfulness. For example, in bucolic Campo, Colorado, a village of 121 souls, the Valentine shrieked a strident warning of three simultaneous microwave threats. Yet the hamlet has no police radar at all, largely because it has no police department. In larger metropolitan areas we noticed this Chicken Little behavior even more, often being bombarded by alerts for eight or nine simultaneous threats while sitting gridlocked in traffic, a major nuisance. Truth is, radar to the side poses no threat at all and radar from behind is scarcely worthy of more attention. Go to How Police Radar Works and Speed Trap 101 to learn why. We''d prefer to not to be annoyed by incessant warnings of microwave ovens in roadside eateries and door openers at every Safeway store. Just let us know when there''s a real threat up ahead and keep quiet the rest of the time." What better description of the weaknesses between the two are there? Your also spending $100 less.

This is my first radar detector and I am very pleased with it. It has many great programmable features, is sleek and small, and has a pretty decent range. I use the option of displaying the voltage of my car on the display, which works great not only as an additional guage (as I don''t have a battery meter in my car) but also as a deterent to other people that think it might be a radar detector. I constantly use auto mode and while sometimes I get a few bogus X and K band alerts, the Ka''s alerts are always in time to allow me to slow down for the cops. Rear sensor also works great.
