Model Reviewed: Uniden 6599SWS

Strength:

no falsing (actually a weakness in disguise)

Weakness:

Ka falsing, poor range (0.5 mile & less), no rear radar detection, do bogey counter, no directional arrows, no quick release suction cup as on the V1

I thought it was going to be a great radar detector after having two other Uniden products. This was clearly superior at first. Then the falsing on Ka started happening. Alabama state troopers use Ka band almost exclusively. I now have a V1 & wonder why I didn''t shell out the money earlier. The bogey counter, arrows, & quick release suction cups are great. Oh yeah one more thing. My wife & I were driving behind one another. The V1 picked up a city police (K band) 2.5 miles before the Uniden (constant on radar).

Strength:

Never failed me

Weakness:

3 mecahanical failures in 3 detectors

Performance was OK, the mechanics suck!Throwing it away and ordering a V1 today. This is the second uniden I bought based on several recommendations. I used a uniden for years in the past which worked well for the cost (1 ticket w/ instant on) until the connection to the power cord failed. Not the cord, but the detector itself. The first 6599 was sent back b/c of a muting problem. The second we got just failed after a year with the same power problem. The mute also does not mute completely, which is very annoying. At leat the old uniden "clicked" when muted. The 6599 mute is barely noticeable. I guess you get what you pay for.

Strength:

Great text display and soothing tones. Looks great and detaches from windshild with ease. Has saved me twice in the 5 months that I have used it.

Weakness:

Voice distortes a little when a lot of activity occures. Havn't got to utilize the SWS system yet.

A great detector overall in which the strengths far outweigh it's weaknesses. I would reccomend it to any one looking into much more expensive models.

Strength:

At first I thought this detector was great. It didn't pick too many false alarms and it had the quick release mechanism.

Weakness:

After having it a few months it starting giving me false Ka/k band alerts every minute or two. I saw another review with the same symptoms. I sent it in for warranty work and 2 weeks later it was returned and guess what? Still gave the false alarms. No more Uniden for me.

I could not recommend this detector because of the problems I've had with it. The warranty obviously is useless since they didn't fix the problem. I should have paid the bucks for the Valentine 1.

Strength:

Excellent display readout

Weakness:

False KA alarms

I like the readout on this unit. Very clear and easy to distinguish. I've had too many KA false alarms though so I'm
returning the unit.

Strength:

Very compact size. Good display. Easy user controls. Easy to mount. Voice feature very helpful.

Weakness:

Constant KA falsing. On trip to Maine from up-state NY, KA falsing occured constantly; every 5-10 minutes. I finally shut off the LRD6599SWS in frustration on the Mass Pike and used my wife's Escort 7500 which rarely -is ever - falsed on the same roads.

After reading other reviews here, I thought Uniden had fixed the KA falsing problem. My previous Uniden falsed to the point that I started to ignored it and eventually got my one and only ticket. I am very disappointed in this product, and it now sits in the junk drawer waiting for our next garage sale.

Strength:

Great radar detection! saved me a bunch of times. Its kinda ironic to see someone going 100mph near you and then see them 2 miles down the road after they were pulled over.

Text is excellent, I'm glad I invested the money.

People get inside my sports car and immidately go: "Wow, what's that?"

Weakness:

Voice technology can be more refined.

They need to invent sucktion caps that don't melt in hot conditions. It gets kinda HOT in CA around August.

Excellent product. Please improve on the sucktion cap technology so they don't melt in the hot sun, and that the radar is FIRMLY mounted and doesn't move or bounch around.

Strength:

I like this unit in all respects. The audio is particularly handy under all driving conditions. At the Delaware Bridge (the only time the sws worked ) it advised of the toll. The unit is at the factory for service for the first time. The price $49.00. Very acceptable. Very few false alarms. I never take it down, and it has not been stolen.

Weakness:

None that I can think of. The laser may be weak, but from what I understand there is not one detector that helps under most conditions.

I bought this unit through a New York City mail order house May 1997 for $158.00. I sure would highly recommend this unit. I can't see paying 3 and 400 dollars for a unit that does not have audio.

Strength:

Good display, voice feature, detach unit w/o taking suction cups off.

Weakness:

Speaker kida distorts when the voice starts talking.

I got the unit as an open box special at Circuit City for a mere $100. I've only used it for about 4 hours now, but first impressions are good. The voice feature is cool, and the display is very readable. I only wish it had those arrows like the Valentine 1, but I guess that would have put me back another $100 :)

Strength:

Voice alert, very accurate for good distances, does not false, easy to view display, easy to use, loud volume, lightweight, allows removal from windshield without removing suction cups.

Weakness:

Illegal in some states? ;-)

This radar detector is well worth the price. It falses so little I never put it in city mode unless I am extremely close to store fronts. The voice alerts are great so you can keep your eye on the road, and the display (which includes a strength indicator when a signal is detected) is easy to read both day and night. It comes with direct wiring cable so you can wire it directly into the fusebox if you wish. One thing I love about this detector is that you can remove it easily from the dash by pressing a button on top without removing the suction cups from the dash. This makes it easy to remove from the vehicle to prevent theft. This radar detector has saved me numerous times with more than enough warning to reduce my speed ahead of time. It works great in both city and highway environments.
