Model Reviewed: CX 9 - 3 way

Strength:

Good sound quality
Suits classical and jazz music well

Weakness:

Nothing I can think of

Paid $230 AUD at Freeway car audio.
The units are made in China, but appear to be well made. I have them connected directly to a Pioneer DEH - P4050 unit with no external amp.

I listened to quite a few speakers in various shops, some of the better ones were the Polk EX series 6" x 9", and the Alpine S series 2 way speakers. I liked the Alpines, but on comparing directly with the Bostons, the Bostons were clearer and more tonally accurate, which suits my musical taste, which is jazz and classical. These speakers may not suit the bass loving headbangers out there.

The speakers didn't fit all that well in my Toyota Camry, and so had to be mounted underneath the parcel shelf cut-outs, and the grills had to be mounted a bit off center from the speakers because of a ledge in the parcel shelf. I don't think reflects badly on the speakers, just that Toyota shape the cut-outs so you buy their speakers. I was a little disappointed with the sound from the front seat - the sound was a little recessed, and lost a little of the clarity that it had when demo'd in the shop. Sitting in the back seat brings back some of this sparkle, but its a bit hard to reach the steering wheel from there. I don't know whether to blame this on the speakers - it may have been the non-ideal mounting or just the nature of mounting speakers there.
The frequency range is supposed to go down to 40 Hz, but I think that this is a case of dodgy specs, as they seem a little light on the bass for that spec.

If it hadn't been for the front seat disappointment I'd give them 5 stars, but it'll only make 4 this time.

Strength:

-Overall reproduction is perfect, clean.
-highs are realistic, and soft
-no distortion ever, ever!
-vocals will give you chills, not a head ache

Weakness:

-only the lowest frequencies are not present, but you'll likely never realize

Of all the speakers I have tested in my accord, everything from Sony es to Alpine, these Boston's are the best I have heard. I replaced my speakers more than once, I thought alpine produced some clean sounding speakers but the Boston's are far superior. All other speakers I have hears sound like speakers, you realize that quickly, these speakers convince you the artist is singing inside your head. Most speakers I have tested, especialy the more expensive ones sound harsh and fake.

These speakers are not only eficient, and cheap(120.00$)but have sound easily worth 300.00$ or more. My front stage Cervwin-Vegga 6.5's are no match yet cost twice the price. With a 50x4 amplifier thes speakers will not distort ever. The vocals give me chills, no other speaker has sounded so real to me. And there Cheap!
