Strength:

Sound good with low power (if you call that a strength) Good air displacement

Weakness:

No bass, horrible mid-bass tweets work for a while and then crack severely over-rated

I've had these speakers for 4 months and I need to say what a disappointment they are. Fabulous deal, I thought. But no. I power these, as well as a focal 690CA set in the rear, with an audiobahn 75rmsx4 amp. I love the focals (you can find my review posted there), but the CDTs were a real let down. When I first tuned the amp to the speakers, they had not yet broken in, so I kept them at a much less wattage. Over time I turned the wattage up little by little, but I found there to be no bass, they bottom out like crazy, and the tweets on the coax focals far out perform the seperate CDTs. in fact, operating on about 50 watts of power and not even full deck volume (from an alpine head unit) one of the tweeters have already cracked and sound like sh*t.

Model Reviewed: CDT EF-61 euro frame

Strength:

great sound imaging from the cone shape, high power handling in a seemless crossover point for the mid and tweet. Very lifelike and warm vocals not to mention the price was way too low... Made in America, midbass is very tight

Weakness:

the tweeters only had surface mount hardwear, even though the box says otherwise. Guess they left 'em out on accident.

this component is very much like the CL-61 exept this has a euro-frame cast basket and a larger tweeter. Same sat.net crossover, slightly smaller dust cap over the coil and thinner overall mount. The EF-61 is the best speaker system I have owned, I have them mounted in Q-forms with the tweeters up on the A pillars, with one tweet wired out of phase. This drastically improves soundstaging and the front of my truck sings! I have a Ranger with RaamMat on all the interior minus the headliner. The system integrates beautifully with the coupling of some Memphis 15-ST50's and a Coustic carbonfiber 10" in a ported box. I would argue that of all the more expensive comp's Ive heard, these are the best for the money. Retails for about $320, I paid $200 and with the 1" tweets you cant go wrong! Would recommend these CDT's

Strength:

Great price, smoooooth sound, high power handing, lots of detail in the new 1"tweets that come with these.

Weakness:

All car speaker can use some eq, these do to. 4000hrz peaks/rings hard without it. Like most mids, not much use under 100hrz, cross them at minium 90hrz with 24bd/octave or 100-120 if using 12db/octave...that is if you'd enjoy clean sound at mass volumes while actually driving.

On special for $149.99 at the zeb.com also just got the 1"10lp image kit for $49...amazing deals! Installed on 1.5" custom hardboard mounts in the front door locations of my 93' del sol. Tweets are angled up and in from right next to the mid(also have the image kit tweets up on the a pillar)The doors are fully dynamated and the door panel is slightly modified so the speakers mount is flush with the outside of the panel. Seriously this affects the sound so much. Putting speakers behind stock grills deep behind/inside door panels is like taking your home system, sticking it in the closet and listening to your favorite tunes through the slats in the doors(hopefully your closet doors are the type with slats or your really in trouble!!)Speakers are running on 200watts x 2 but thats more for my peace of mind(I just want to be sure I have that last bit of headroom)I also ran them on a 125x2 and they sounded identical. Lowpass from audiocontrol EQX 24db/octave at 90hrz. When I first fired them up I was a little disappointed. Very tiny sound, tons of sssssiblence...Then they began to break in, slowly. These need 20hours of hard play to break in, but when they do they sound FANTASTIC. Added some eq here and there, in my opion these speakers are starting to compare to stuff that retails for twice as much. Added the image kit 1"tweets mounts at far corners or the dash on the a-pillars.(tried the 3/4"kit first it SUCKS seriously SUCKS use the 1")Also I used the l-pad(tweeter adjuster) only to set the volume I wanted then I took the appropriate measures, built a fixed l-pad out of high quality resistors fro partsexpress.com and dumped the cheap/cheesy knob adjuster. This changed the sq of the image/dash tweets from o.k. to SUPERB! Try it out if you've the know how. With the main tweets next to the mid I've got superb imaging and cohesion. With the dash tweets added I've got elevated soundstage and LOTS of depth, also widened the stage a little! So now this system(CL-61's and second set of CDT10 tweets) can easily compare with many 2ways that run retail $500+ dollars, easily. Actually I was able to run a set of CDT eurosport 6.5's($700) in my system. I assure you that the CL-61's are so close, 85% of the euro's sound. Less forward, a very little less detail, not quite as "real sounding",not quite as much extension below 100hrz, but in my system had better imaging and wider soundstage. And I actually prefer the more laid back sound while driving. If the price was the same I go for the euro's, but it's not so the choice becomes quite hard. Alot can go into tuning a system. Speakers cannot install themselves and don't chose what components power them. Just remember that the raw speakers you buy are 15% of the sound, the amp/cd/eq are another 15% or so and the depth and time you spend on actually installing the system is easily the final 70% of the sound Q. Even many "pro" installers don't do a good enough job. I don't just mean the circuit city/best buy boys either. Anyway, installed properly this system is far beyond any other $200 set I've ever heard of.
