I had JBL Decade 5x7 speakers at all four locations in my car. The voicecoil on one of the front speakers died, so I purchased a pair of these Cerwin Vegas for $120 at Best Buy. I thought it was well worth the cost, because the improvement was so immense. Different bass notes actually sounded different. And I thought my Pioneer headunit was clipping because the JBLs became quite muddy when I began to turn it up. However, the C-V's sound perfectly clear to almost the maximum volume! A few weeks later, the same speakers went on sale for $80/pair, so I picked up a set for the rear locations.

They are WONDERFUL for jazz and acoustic guitars because of the good midrange and excellent treble. Horns sound great. They are a little on the harsh/sterile side for some music types such as rock, though, but I'm being picky.

Unfortunately, these speakers have almost no bass. My car, a '93 Mercury Cougar, does not help the situation because the big interior and thick carpeting deadens the sound. Therefore, they might have more bass in smaller cars. Consequently, I got a Pioneer 50wx2 amp bridged into 150wx1 driving a Sony 10" subwoofer in the trunk. I am very satisfied with the overall sound. In fact, I had to upgrade my home stereo because if I wanted to listen to music and have it sound GOOD, then I had to go drive around!

JBL Decade 5x7s: They had more bass, but were very "one-notey". All of the bass sounded the same. They were also not as clear. Then again, they were half the price!
