Model Reviewed: Focal Polyglass 165 V2

Strength:

High quality construction: Nothing in this package seems cheap. All components are durable and well made, the 6.5 is impessive in styling and construction, and the crossover is solid yet isn't chunky with a variety of settings available. Very clear and loud: These speakers can keep up with the best of subwoofers, while retaining great quality sound (given your powering them with a clean amplifier). Price: Given other sets in this price range, it provides great value for money. European made: Very important that you should buy speakers that are made from either Europe or USA. (Japanese manufacters make fantastic electronics but their speakers aren't the best)

Weakness:

Can be fatiguing after a while: more of a general weakness of metal tweeters rather than specifically these speakers. Musical range in 6.5 mids could be better: again for the price, not much more can be asked, but it is a weakness that those looking for more sound quality will notice. 6.5 mids are very deep: consequently they may not be able to fit in standard door pods without a spacer of some kind.

After months of searching and testing various brands and models (see similar products used), I finally decided to go with the Focals. Of course, my decision was based on my liking of the focal sound, but more specifically, my preference for the metal tweeter compared to the silk dome tweeter. Personally, I find the silk domes are a little dull sounding. I like my music to be in your face, and these Focals are. Other sites might say that the Focal tweeters tend to be harsh, but powered by an Alpine MRV-F340 amplifier putting a nice 55 RMS into each channel, the Focals stay clear at very high volumes. However, as with all metal tweeters, they can be very fatiguing over time. The 6.5 inch midrange is very well constructed, however tends to act more like a midbass rather than a midrange speaker. Consequently, when the splits are filtered by HPF, the mids become almost inactive and the system sounds very tinny, even when the HPF is set at 50hz. Certainly designed to run without a filter. Also, because the 6.5 are very powerful and move a lot of air, sound deadening of the doors is essential. Overall, this is a very nice set of splits in this price range and I am happy with my purchase. The only thing preventing a higher rating is the 6.5 inchs acting too bassy rather than musical.

Similar Products Used:

MB Quart DSC 216 and Reference series, Alpine Type-R and DDLinear splits, Boston Accoustics FS60 and RC620: All of these use metal tweeters but none seemed to be as musically dynamic as the focals (Boston RC620 came close though). Rainbow Sound Line series, CDT SL61: Both these sets use silk dome tweeters, and to me sounded a bit flat, but are still very nice speakers. The CDT's did sound a bit more dynamic than the Rainbows.
