Model Reviewed: Tarantula SST 6.5

Strength:

Good midrange. Overall performance ot bad for the price.

Weakness:

Tweeter can fatigue the listener at higher volume levels. Bass could be a little better, but is by no means terrible. One crossover was DOA but is now working after some "adjustment".

These are a decent set of speakers for the price point. I looked everywhere for a knowledgable review for these speakers to no avail. It is always a tough decision to buy a pair of speakers sight unheard and unread. The tweeter is extremly bright and hard to tame. Midrange is very good and detailed, and well, the bass in my opinion is a little on the shy side. The suspension is very stiff, and probably needs a little burn in time. (I have only listened to them for about a week.) But, I think a little more Xmax would have been helpfull. The manufacturer claims a 3ohm nominal load which is accurate. I used my multi-meter and came up with 3.5 ohms DC resistance for the woofer and about 1.5 ohms for the tweeter. This low resistance on the tweeter is probably one of the reasons this speakers seems so bright. And the fact that I am replacing a factory whizzer cone tweeter with an actual soft dome silk tweeter. My biggest gripe is that one of the speakers tweeter was not working once connected to the outboard 12db per octave crossover. I took the cover off the crossover and fiddled with the inductor. The tweeter sprang to life and has been working so far.

Similar Products Used:

I have used JBL, Sony, Pioneer, and MB Quart. These speakers probalby rank somewhere in the middle of these.
