Model Reviewed: Boss RDC-V12C

Strength:

You absolutly cannot beat the price. SQ is quite good. SPL is strong. Plays low and strong. Can be crammed in a very small box. No mechanical problems (bottoming out, burnt VC's, etc..) Versatile DVC Dual 2ohm= 1ohm or 4 ohm

Weakness:

You probably won't brag about the brand name. Not available anymore.

Before I start you should now that I have been a car stereo dealer/installer for 10 years. I have also competed in IASCA, DB Drag, and USAC for about 5 years and have about 18 trophies and a state championship for SPL. I tell you so you won't blow off this review. I bought two of these from ebay at an absolute steal of $56 for the pair shipped with intent to resell them. I always thought of Boss as cheap crap, but I had no experience with it. When I got the subs I had to check them out, and what do know, them looked sharp and seemed to be very well built. I decided to give one a test run. I started off with it in a 1 cubic ft. sealed box and was immediatly impressed with the sound quality. It played deep, with articulation between notes and minimal overhang(tight). After it had been broken in and I started playing with the volume, I found that it also played quite loud. A $28 sub has no right to be good(although I think the retail was about $180 each). Power handling is not an issue at all. Mine is powered from two channels of a RF Punch 800a4 @ 435watts @4 ohms, and it handles it flawlessly. I have since switched it into a .55 cubic ft sealed box and it still sounds good. The bonus to the small box is that it got louder. It did lose some of the low end, and a little bit of note seperation, but it still impresses. Believe it or not this sub is louder and cleaner than MANY big name subs. The cone is a red metallic poly, the surround is rubber, the basket is cast, the terminals are gold compression, the magnet is huge, voice coils are 2.5" dual 2 ohm, overall impressive. I have had many good subs and I have about 20 of them kicking around that I could choose from, and yet this sub has stayed in my personal reference system with my RF 800a4 amp and Focal Polykevler 6.5" components. You probably won't be able to find this sub anymore, but maybe the new versions are equal or better.
