Model Reviewed: single voice coil

Strength:

Punchy bass, deep extension, very full range, will take more wattage than rated for easily, and very cheap price.

Weakness:

Very boomy bass, most kicks on songs sound bad on them, clarity is not great, boxes have to be very big to sound right.

My brother bought 4 of these 15`s through ebay, I built one huge box with a divider in it that provided about 2.4 cubic feet per sub, it was put in a ford escort (yes it did fit just barely). I powered it with my Power Acoustik 1600 watt fire and ice amp hooked up to give each sub 200 watts rms. They were very loud, clarity isn`t great on most songs but they can hit pretty damn hard. They still weren`t as loud as one Audiobahn 18 on 400 watts facing up in the trunk of an Oldsmobile cutlass, or as deep, or as clear but for the money they can knock. I don`t really recommend them because they don`t sound that good, and one by itself isn`t very loud.

I heard a zeus 15 once that sounded sorta like it. Nothing I have used really falls within its range.

Model Reviewed: 2001

Strength:

Tight bass, low Qtc, high power (350/700 watts), light but rigid injected poly-cone, high Xmax (9mm), low frequency responses (15-1500 Hz, 20 Hz Fs), Cheap, 1 year warranty, standard 14" cutout with 6.5" depth and 8 screw holes, Aluminum dust cap with voice-coil cooling.

Weakness:

Could use a bigger magnet, single voice coil, foam surrounds (rubber would be more durable), cutout template is on back of instruction sheet.

This sub rocks. I used it in my basement for HT. It's in a homemade 16X16X16 (2 cubic feet as recommended by Pioneer) cube box made out of 3/4" MDF, sealed (no ports), lined with fiberglass, stuffed with 20 oz of polyfill. I painted it gloss black and it looks pretty cool. No grills needed as I made it down firing (turn sub upside down with 4 corners on 2X2" square wooden legs glued to the MDF baffle. This sub goes very low and bass is tight (chest thumping tight). I have it powered by wiring it in series to my Jensen MS500 which is another 15", 6-ohms, factory-made sub with 500 watts (4 ohms) Sunfire/Carver amp which yields a 10 ohm load. I was too chicken to wire it in parallel as I don't know if my Sunfire amp can handle the 2.4 ohms load and it may be too much power for my drivers. With these 2 15" subs going movies never sounded so good. All pictures have to be straightened and recessed lights pushed back up from ceiling (they all slid down 1 in. from ceiling due to vibration) after a movie at 1/2 volume on my Onkyo 50 watts/channel X 5 DD/DTS receiver. And this is downfiring onto thin carpet and cement slab flooring. I'll put it on a square ceramic tile to improve reflections. The key with any sealed box is to make sure there is no air leak. I had to caulk my seams several times with silicone before all air leaks stopped. I guess my edges were not straight enough and the sides didn't fit flushed enough. I tried to place this sub into my Jensen sub box which is 6 cubic feet, double-ported box, and the sub sounded lower but more boomy. I like it tighter as my Jensen driver can provide the boominess while the Pioneer TS-W384C can provide the thumps. Overall I am very satisfied with this car sub as it performed well in my HT. 5 stars for value but only 4 for overall as there are always better subs....for more money :-)

Strength:

DEEP! Great value.

Weakness:

Some distortion. Neighbors complain:). Poor high frequency reproduction(90-150hz)

I have one of these monsters in a home made 2.5cu. ft. MDF box and a 160 watt USAcoustics amp to push it. Even with the wimpy amp, this sub POUNDS. Actually makes lower frequencies than you can hear (15hz), which translates into deep, tooth jarring bass. About as loud as my friend's 3 JLaudio w6-10's with 300 watts each. Sound quality isn't great, but for $400 including installation, I got one crazy-ass system. Cheap bass at its best.
