Model Reviewed: 2000 10" HX2

Strength:

-I have 2 10" rockford hx2's in the trunk of a 1999 honda civie si and they pound
-nice tight bass
-super loud
-hit extremely low
-awesome built sub
-realy do hit hard

Weakness:

-they're going to make me deaf soon

I have 2 120" rockford HX2's in the trunk of a 99 2 door civic. I wanted some amazing sound quality but also wanted big bass, so I bough some boston mids and tweets for my high end and this system sounds absolutely amazing. I'm running my 2 10' off the rockford punch 1100a2 and it runs them amazing. Super lound clean and clear bass, realy nice bass response. I'm so glad I got these subs and amp I can tell people I have 2 15's and they'll believe me just because this was such a well built sub. If you want a loud very responsive bassy sub this is a very good choice. I'd recomend these subs to anybody with any music listening tastes.

Strength:

these subs kick some serious butt, they pound really hard, clean bass, each sub peaks at 2000watts/1000rms nuff said

Weakness:

there are none

if you want to turn heads or alarm your neighborhood these are it, I'v had allmost every sub out there an only the strokers can compare, the sound good at all levels. Im running two 12s with a power 1000 and I allways drown out all the other cars. alot of manufactures make their subs with pretty colors and polished or chrome baskets so you pay for the look but sacrifice sound. Fosgates have an agressive badass rebel ugly monsterous look so your paying for nuttin but sound.if you plan on getting these I'd advice you to start a savings fund to pay for all the tickets you might get oh and you might want to get some tylenol to get rid of the headaches you WILL be getting

Strength:

not too big, not much power required for serious bass, hit HARD at normal freq's

Weakness:

Doesn't get quite as low as I'd like

These things can HIT. I've got them running off a Crossfire TEK150.2(150w rms amp in STEREO) and it rattles my whole car- can't see out the rear view mirrors (any of the 3) or sometimes even out the front windshield. They make rap/hip hop sound excellent but are a bit quiet when I throw in my Allman Brothers(Yes, even though that is classic rock they have some noteworthy basslines)If I could get just one thing more from these it would be more low end. Sometimes when things are hitting so well these two 12's seem to "fall out" when it gets real low. But thats my only gripe. For everything else they can pound. You can feel it in the center of your chest. A good sub for the modest price, just give 'em a good amp(Crossfire isn't well known -yet- but they are an excellent amp at a very reasonable price-especially if you know the right people). Two rattling thumbs up. I would consider these subs to be a good investment for anyone who wants a "start up" sub that may never have to be replaced

Merlin

Strength:

Works in sealed or vented enclosures, providing its boxed right. Has lasted through hard playing for a long time.

Weakness:

None

This sub is excellent. I had it in a ported enclosure and it shook my truck. I ran it off of a Kicker ZR240 amp, and even in a ported enclosure it punched good. I recently slapped it into a 0.42 cuft sealed enclosure and it hits like nuts. Excellent response and very accurate bass reproduction.

Recommended for anyone who doesn't wanna blow a ton of cash on a DVC or HX2. You will NOT be disappointed.

Strength:

plays pretty loud with little power

Weakness:

can't play real deap and can't hit real hard

I put 2 RFZ12 in a 88 cutllas with a puch 150 briged running them and it sound decent. Don't get me wrong they don't compare to JL' or orion or IDQ but there pretty good for 138$. I have less than 300$ in the subs and the amp. So if you want decent bass that doesn't need lots of power than they're a good choice.

Strength:

This sub knocks with 250watts. I have it in a single bandpass enclosure, and you can feel the bass in your spine while driving. I have yet to hear this sub distort or bottom.

Weakness:

nada

I would recommend this sub to anyone, except it is no longer made. The xlc's replaced it. If they improved this sub in any fashion, then it is an even better buy. I paid $130.00 for the sub new in a bandpass box.

an Audio Enthusiast

A few months ago, I had a mission - to find earth shattering bass.Having just lost a Sony active sub to another member of my family, I was left with the puny (by my standard) bandpass sub which came with my Wharfedale Modus Satelites (hey I dont have much space;oP). Anyway, I knew that if I was to buy a premade sub that had what I wanted that it was gonna cost several thousand dollars. So after a long coffee session, and recently stepping out of a friends Honda CRX with 4 JL Audio 10w6 subs in it, I decided I would use car subs and make my own enclosure. So the first sub I made was a single reflex bandpass with two Kicker C-12a's. While this sub was incredibly efficient and had HUGE spl, it had a very small range of useful frequencies and was a tad, no a lot, boomy. So it became tiring to listen to unless you happened to be listening to jungle techno, in which case boomy is what you want. Another bad thing about this box was that it was about 75 kilograms and was way too big to fit properly in the room (about 1.4x.5x.5 metres).
So I went back to the drawing board, listened to some more subs, and decided that a sealed box is the kind of bass that i dig (tight + controlled). I also decided on a pair of Rockford Fosgate RFP 1412 subwoofers, as the C-12a's were to boomy for my liking even in a sealed box. So I went down and picked up some RFP 1412's and made the recommended enclosure, 2.5 cubic feet, out of 32 mm MDF and heavily braced it internally(this box is SOLID).
So I had the subs + enclosure, now I needed a suitably powerful pre/power amp. I figured that a mono amp with about 300 watts rms would be very nice, so I set out to find one. Most of the places I rang, told me I needed a Public Adress amp - which was about ~$2500 and was only a power amp.
Luckily, in Australia, there is an electronics store that specialises in speaker components, Jaycar Electronics, and they had just what I was looking for - a subwoofer pre/power amp with an active low pass filter and a sub sonic filter and for only $349. Bargain. But this is a kit, so you gotta solder it all together, no biggie, and in about a weeks time I had it ready to be tested by a specialist amplifier manufacurer, Red Gum. During testing it was rock solid and cranked "well in excess of 350 watts".
So now I have earth shattering bass, two 12 inch subs and a 300 watt amp, for about $1000.
$349 for the amp kit
$580 for the subs
and the MDF, damping material, 8 gauge cable and assorted other materials make up the rest.
In my oppinion, this is such a bargain, as I have as much bass + spl as many night clubs (and thats some one elses oppinion - so it must sound good)
So if you have experience with wood working and electronics give it a try, the results are more than worth the work. Just don't place it in the corner of a room, as it will shake the plaster loose off your walls - as it did to me.
It's all fun, and that's why I do it
So fair well folks, keep the music alive.
btw, I'd give this 10 lil animated speakers, but the max is 5. ;o)
