Model Reviewed: 1999 Punch DVC's

Strength:

Sound great at high and low volumes. Pushed it with a kenwood 400 watt amp (kac927) then now with a MTX thunder 2300x and the subs absolutley slam. They are in a ported box and i really enjow them ALOT.

Weakness:

None

These are much better then the RF series, love the DVC, have two mono wired onto a MTX2300x and the slam. my amp was tested to about 950 puching 4ohm mono and they take it well. They sound great at low as well as high volumes. I would reccomend anyone consindering subs to look at these and spend the more money to get these instead of regualr fosgate subs. I had a pair of RF's and they sounded good and hit hard but these are much better.
I paid 145 a peice.

Strength:

None.

Weakness:

Very weak. The voice coil on the Rockford Punch 10" is plastic instead of the normal copper. Also the spider on these subs is made of tissue paper and rips very easily (just like your mom). I blew these subs out in one day with my awesome 50 watt rampage amp with a K-mart wiring kit.

Dont ever buy these subs. They are the worst ever. In fact dont ever buy 10" subs. One more tip. You can make a good sub box out of cardboard just be sure to electrical tape it all up.

Strength:

I just installed 2 Punch 10's (with an Alpine CD player) in my 4-door 1994 Blazer. They bump like mad. Two of my friends have 2 12" 600 Rockfords with a 600 watt amp, but I can hear little difference so far.

Weakness:

My MTX RT2200 (85x2 at 14.4 volts, 50x2 at 12.5, I have no idea what my battery is) amp has a set crossover, so I don't get a lot of high bass. I am going to replace the stock rear door 6" speakers, so that will help out. The directions that came with the subs said .75 cubic feet apiece for a sealed box, but the measurements give 1.22 apiece. I should have done the math first though Also, I am still finding the best gain and bass settings.

I realy like Punch 10's. I have heard horror stories about Rockford subs and was afraid that they would not be much better than 6x9's. For 2 for $100, they are an excellent buy. I was considering adding a third, or upgrading to Punch XLC's until I heard them in my truck.

These are my first subs. I've had Cerwin-Vega, Jensen, and Pioneer 6x9's. The Vegas were the best.

Strength:

The Punch 10" DVC produces great bass response. High SPL for competition. Doesn't bottom out like other 10's because of it's extended back plate.

Weakness:

The only bad thing about these is they don't make them anymore they changed over to the HX2's and the HE2's.

I've been competing with these subs for 2 years. I have 4 10" Punch DVC's and a punch 800a2 amp. I've won a few soundoff's hitting an SPL of 147.6. For 4 10's that's very impressive. Usually it takes 4 12's to do that. I like these subs a lot and if they still made them I would reccomend them to anyone who has the money.

Model Reviewed: RFP2810 10 inch Punch XLC

Strength:

It wasnt terribly expensive.

Weakness:

Its not the greatest sub I have used.

I was at Best Buy today and noticed they had some of these Rockford Fosgate subs on clearance. I chose an XLC 8ohm 10 incher because I was not hooking it up to the greatest amp (a cheap 200 watt model) and I didnt want to put too much strain on it. I hooked it up in a small sealed enclosure, and used two capacitors to supply the reserve to the amp. After installing the mess I fired it up. It provided sound and bass where there was none before, and did it relatively loudly. It seemed to be built OK, and it looks impressive. That is all well if you look at the readily available comparison stuff at Circuit City and Best Buy. It seems to be good enough to compare to other mass market stuff and in comparison looks relatively well built. However the internet is another source for parts. Local shops here deal in the same RF stuff Best Buy does, perhaps a stray JL audio or the "high end" Jensens. I decided to try a few lesser known brands from the internet and see what similar money could buy. The Koiiler XM7610's I bought back in 99, they have a heavier magnet structure then the RF XLC, have a rubber surround, binding posts, and a plastic cone. They set me back $20 or so less then the RF XLC. The RF XLC is rated at 200rms, 400 peak. The Koiiler is rated at 350 max. I fed the Koiiler 500rms in an MTX Thunderbox bandpass and it held out, I am not gonna dare try it with the RF but could it hold out? Next subject, the American Pro VS9210. I stumbled across one of these on ebay back in September or so of last year. For $60 it seemed worth a try. It has dual 4 ohm voice coils among other things, like binding posts, large surround, double stacked magnets, vented well for cooling . I feed it from an 1100 watt amp in the same MTX Thunderbox I had the Koiiler in (its a VERY tight squeeze, it barely fits). I pounded it with the hardest hitting bass songs I had. The amount of air it moved was incredible (it has like 16mm Xmax or something). I surely doubt the RF XLC can handle that kind of power but it costs nearly as much if not more. So, the RF XLC works, it produces bass, it seems to be built as good or better than most mass market stuff. It sounds good enough and for most people would probably be fine, but there probably is something out there equally good too for a similar or lesser price. Its a fair value, and it seems to be good enough that I would buy another at the price I got this one but I would much sooner get another American Pro VS9210, I think for $10 less than what I paid the XLC would be a much better deal but you gotta pay if the stuff is gonna be made here in the USA I guess.

Strength:

cheap,loud, small, Rockford name

Weakness:

no complaints except for the fact that I think it should be able to handle more power

I would definitly recommend this to anyone that doesn't want to break the bank. I have one ten and one eight both in truck boxes off a California 600 watt amp and it turns heads at stop lights. You can hear me coming from down the street. Great overall subwoofer
