I love building low watt systems, so I used an Orion Cobalt 230. Bridged mono, this amp is putting out @240 watts (@120 to each sub) and is effectively running at @1 ohm with no problems (why I love Orion) This amp is the least expensive amp Orion makes and it makes Pioneer premier and Sony explode amps look like sh*t. emergency roadside assistance

Strength:

Loud, Clean, Tight, Inexpensive, Versatile and the loudest, cleanest sub that will handle double it's rated power any day of the week and twice on Sundays with no Questions asked. I ran these 2 SPL 10's off of a Kenwood KAC-X811D which gives 1064 watts rms bridged at 4 ohms. They took it all with no damage and great, distortion-free bass.

Weakness:

The only weakness is that they are no longer produced. SS has many replacements on their website or at official retailers in the US, but U need to go to Soundstream.com to find that info. Happy Bass everyone, from Soundstreams Number 1 fan.

In my eyes, it is unfortunate that the mainstream brand name of Sounstream was purchased/merged with Power Acoustic. In my town in the Inland NW, there are NO DEALERS within the area, so i have been stuck finding replacement gear on the net, but is pretty easy. My 2 spl 10s were powered by an old school Reference 500 and were in a ported enclosure in the back of my bug. My friends used to know that I was coming from over 6 blocks away! They registered at a whopping 156.3db in an IASCA comp and drew enough power, that I had to supply the Ref 500 with it's own alternator and cap with Good 4awg SS power and ground cable. That stopped the dimming of the lights anyway, but did not stop the heart stopping bass. For those of you who don't know, 154db will stop your heart for a short spurt, but continuos subjection to that is nearly impossible for periods of time, so you have to have a deck with a remote to be operated from outside of the car. I ran Soundstream Exact 6.5's, 5.25's and 4's in kick panels, all powered by a Lil' Wonder, Ref 200 and Ref 300. My whole front trunk was nothing but amps, cap and wiring with an extra optima battery. If you want CLEAN BASS - buy these subs. If you want LOUD BASS - buy these subs. Great in ported or sealed application, and now, for me atleast, all of my equipment is transferring to my new pickup. I expect it will not be as loud, since I have to use a sealed enclosure, but I think that most Audiphiles that know the names 'Kapton' voice coils and 'Triple Darlington Power Supply" know in their hearts that noone can compete with good ol Soundstrem in the USA. Not if, but when you find and buy these subs (I say that because you have no other real choice in today's marketplace) be prepared to run them with a SS amp as well. Choose one that is 1/2 ohm stable, which most SS amps are, and find one rated at what would be half of the subs RMS handling, because with SS, one thing you have to know is that they seriously underrate their product. They used to do that for competition, allowing a high power amp to be in a lower competing class. I do SQ + and have scored 36-38 of 40 in a few comps a few years back with these and the other SS components. Buy with confidence of superiority and their love of true, unbiased, undistorted, loud, clean, tight bass. Soundstream is the best, always had been and will be as long as they are around. Rock On my brothers and sisters!!!

Model Reviewed: 2000 SPL12 (SPL12n)

Strength:

The SPL12s are very versitile subs; they can be installed in ANY type of box with a huge range of size possibilities. They stand potential to be among the loudest subs on earth if used properly. They are very efficient subs, I know a couple people who ran them off 100 watts or so and they did just fine. In my new setup I found out just how CLEAN these subs are; they are very tight in the proper airspace, and produce no distortion. Not only can they take far larger power loads than they are officially rated at, but I would honestly recommend powering them quite a bit higher than their rating for the best results (as long as it's clean power...). Very sturdy subs. These subs are definately intended for performance.

Weakness:

The flat dust cones on the newer models seem a bit soft, but the older dome dust cones were fine. The design of the newer subs (looks) is kinda blah (they are not bad looking, but not great looking either). People seeking "flashy" looks should look elsewhere.

These subs continue to impress me more and more. I have used Soundstream SPL12s since around 1998 (dome dust cone models), and I currently use the newer flat dust cone models. My original setup was 2 SPL12s running on a Rockford Fosgate Punch 200.2 (the old school Fosgate, not the new crap). I ran them in a sealed box (single chamber) around 1.5 cubic feet. The subs were wired with voice coils in series, subs in parallel to the amplifier for a 4ohm load. I scored around 138dbs in a local Myer-Emco Bass Off, then after some tweaking I came back with 140dbs. The 200.2 pushed about 500-600 Watts continuously. When my Fosgates were stolen, I went through a few amps before I stuck with the Soundstream Rubicon 702 to run them. With the subs rated to handle 300 Watts PEAK, the 702 seamed to be a suitable match (rated at 700x1, but more realistically pushing closer to 900-1000) even though at first I was afraid to turn the gain up. When I finally got the balls to "experiment" and turn the gain up, the subs actually got cleaner instead of distorting. They managed to take the full power of the 702 with no problem at all. I never got a chance to measure the SPL, however they were a considerable amount louder than when running on the Fosgate (I estimate around 142dbs, possibly tweakable to 144). I must note that in the single chamber box I was running them in at that time they produced a decent SPL, however sound quality wasn't all that... The subs seemed a bit "loose", mainly noticable when my trunk lid was open and they were firing into free air outside the box. I never paid much attention to this due to the fact that they were intended to be a SPL sub, hence the name... Before I got a chance to run another competition with the 702, my car was broken into and EVERYTHING was stolen. Now, 3 years later I have finally gotten my new setup going. I have been extremely pleased with Soundstream in the past, so I decided to stick with the tried and true. I managed to get a hold of four brand new, factory sealed 2000 model SPL12s on eBay for $100 a piece (these are the flat dust cone models). I also got a good deal on a Soundstream Class A 10.2. I decided that I would run just 2 of the subs for a while and keep the other 2 in the box for backup (or in a future vehicle I will install all 4) and keep the gain down on the 10.2 (since the monster is capable of putting out around 1500 Watts continuous, and as stated before the subs are rated only to handle 300 Watts peak). I built a new wedge box, this time with 2 separate chambers, each a bit over .8 cubic feet (dropping to around .5 cubic feet with subs installed). The subs are wired with voice coils in parallel, subs in parallel to creat a 1ohm load on the amp (the amp runs efficiently at 1ohm or 1/2ohm mono, or down to 1/4ohm stereo). When I was done installing everything, I began tuning the amps... Playing some Snoop Doggy Dogg (Doggy Style), I started to adjust the gain. Before I knew it, the gain on the amp was pretty much all the way up! The two SPL12s not only took the FULL POWER of the 10.2, but they LOVE it! The higher I turned the gain, they not only got louder, but they got cleaner as well. With the full load from the amplifier and the volume cranked they hit loud AND clear, a VERY rare combination! I am guessing that the subs are getting somewhere between 700 and 800 Watts a piece continuously, quite possibly more. I don't know if Soundstream made a typo when rating these subs (maybe it should have been 300 Watts continuous?) but the subs crave the power. With the dual chamber sealed wedgebox I made, and the power they are running off of, they are cleaner than JL W6s, and louder than W7s (I am not exaggerating). I have no idea how many dbs I am hitting now, but I will find out soon. All I have to say is WOW!!

You wont believe these SPL monsters. March the 2nd I took them to the Usaci spring break jam competition ant I hit 161.3 with one ten inch sub. I was powering it with a DB drive 400 watt platnium series amplifier and with a Jensen CD player. I would highly recommend these subs for any 1.

Weakness:

Haven't seen of heard any yet. Don't expect to.

I have two of these installed in a sealed box in the trunk of my 1999 Toyota Corona. These are the best subs money can buy. The JL Audio W7 is the only sub I can see beating these bass monsters. Many days I get to my various destinations with my insides still rattling form the awesome bass these beasts produce. I have the bass level on my Clarion DXZ 715 turned down to minus two and yet the bass is still loud. I am running them on a Rockford 1000BD.

DVC means several wiring options (4 ohm or 1 ohm). Subs will play at an amazing volume level with adequete power. They will play very low frequency.

Weakness:

Soundstream was bought out good luck finding a pair.

I just installed 2 of the SPL12''s in my son''s car. We built a 5.0 cubic foot ported enclosure for them. The box is tuned for 30hz. for power he is using a JBL BP1200.1. We are only running the subs at 4 ohms right now supplying 300 watts to each. The output of these subs in this enclosure is amazing! They will go very very low and the output is off the scale! The "gain" on the amp is barely turned on and the crossover on the amp is set at about 50 hz. This is an awesome setup for rap.

$1000NZD each. I own four SPL160's and have them in a single enclosure in my 1995 Honda Integra GSR. I have recorded a SPL score of 155.4DB using two MTX2300 amps. I am trying at the moment 4 SPL170's and prefer the 160's by far. Expensive subs, but its worth paying the extra money for them. I have owned seven types of subs, and I must say good work Soundstream.
