Strength:

none.

Weakness:

Everything. Poor customer service and Rates.

Don't give your self the pain.

I switched because farmers promised us a better rate, guess what? It changed every month. I had it for 4 months and the next bill would never be the same or even near. On top of that I changed my address, they charged a large fee... My address was never changed. When I called her all she had to say was... Oh, I don't know how that happened. This wasn't the first time. I've called them every month because of my bill. Same answer EVER TIME.

When I called to pay my bill, NO ONE PICKEDs UP! I called three days in a ROW, three, Four times a day. I'm the only breadwinner of the family. I can't afford them nor do I have enough time to deal with them.

I just switched my car insurance to Geico, and my premium is HALF with everything I was getting from Farmers.

Strength:

No strengths

Weakness:

Poor customer service, Lack of communication, failure to meet expectations

I have been a farmers customer for over 2 years. Not only did my family have to deal with rude/incompetent sales reps, but also inexplainable drafts from our accounts. They did not have explanations for the jump in price in the middle of my renewal cycle. They never returned my calls when I would inquire about such drafts, and when I would finally reach someone I was told it would only be given back as a credit for the following months. Farmers is a horrible, horrible insurance company. If you like taking time off work to go to the bank for letterhead statements, then go to your agents office only to prove the overdraft charges and deal with the rude reps just so you can wait 2 months to get the credit on your account and not the money they never should have got, then farmers is for you.

Farmers Insurance —
Stay away from this company. I was originally insured with 21st Century but then with Farmers when they acquired them. I never had a problem with 21st but Farmers is a joke. They billed me in error (a mistake they admitted) so much that they overdrew my checking account resulting in additional overdraft fees (which they said they would also repay). For over two months I've been running in circles, leaving messages with associates who never return calls and I STILL have not seen one cent of what they owe me. They always have some story to buy themselves more stalling time, probably hoping I'll just go away. Time for legal action.

Agent and Customer Service

My concern is not with vehicle I purchased, rather than with the insurance and the particular agent that i chose to write my policy with. I have been with Farmers insurance group of michigan for about 2+ months and after i made my initial down payment, i have had no further contact with my agent. I have had nothing but issues when attempting to inquire about my policy or payments that i wanted automatically deducted from my bank account. I am not certain if all of the concerns are primarily with Stephen Allens office(Det, MI). But, many of them begin there. Lets start with my policy cancelling after the initial payment and me, having to pay astronimical re-instatement fees!!! I wanted to inquire of info within my policy, even something as simple as if my next payment is set up on EFT(automatic withdrawal) and I have yet to receive a return call. It should be noted that, when i wanted to begin my policy I had not problems contacting the agent and he even came to my home, after hours to set it up. Now, that they have me, "locked in" as a policy holder, my only alternative was to switch agents to see if the problem is with Stephen Allens office or is it the lack of professionalism and/or good customer service with Farmers Insurance as a whole. I plan to continue the policy for at least the 6 months to determine.

Farmers Insurance advertises that they have more discounts than any other insurance company, which is true. What they don't tell you is that when you come up for renewal in 6 months that all the discounts drop off. So while they may be cheaper when you first take out your policy, when you come up for renewal your rates are actually higher than everyone else.

Strength:

Their agents.

Weakness:

It's all good and righteous until you find yourself dealing with their useless HelpPoint Claims Dept. and their random rate increases start showing up...

Three years ago my soon-to-be-former agent convinced me to sign up with Farmers after comparing their rates to what other companies had offered. His service has been great from the moment I purchased the policy to date, but unfortunately, the rates have done nothing but increase, no matter what I do. I added a second vehicle to my policy, purchased an anti-theft device and signed up for auto-pay, but rates still sky-rocketed. It wasn't apparent at first, because I did get the respective discounts for the first few months, but somehow Farmers still managed to compensate for those one way or another. Why? I don't think they even know why. Well, they're not trying to save YOU money.
HelpPoint needs adjusters who care. In our case, they treated us like just another boring claim in their file, they were skeptical to everything we told them, they purposely misled us about multiple things, and at the end of four long weeks they ended up doing nothing but, guess what, increasing our rates--again! (For a 50% at-fault where personal damages totaled $600? Forget first-time accident forgiveness with these guys.)
Perhaps Farmers works for some people, but with rates as high as theirs, it's only fair they work for everybody.

Strength:

Thought it had many

Weakness:

Poor coordination between the agent and the company. Huge gap between what they quote and what they bill.

Avoid it completely. They cannot keep hiding behind being a big company and they do not care about their customers. When you ring the customer servcie regarding their policy premium they try to push the issue back to the agent. While the agent is clueless. So you land up running between pillar to post. Better have a deep pocket if you go for them. Avoid agent Tanaka McCoy at memphis. She has no influence at all to fight for you or even get updates from the company. Iwish I had been advised similarly.

Model Reviewed: Chevrolet Caprice Wagon (custom)

Strength:

NONE!!

Weakness:

Do not pay the value of the actual vehicle in an accident

I have a customized caprice wagon which is a bit of a difficult vehicle to replace considering all the attributes mine has. After a farmers' insured ran into my quarter panel, they initially estimated 1500 to fix it, even though the body shop they told me to go to claimed 3k minimum. So, I pointed out a few mistakes in their estimate (no two tone paint, underestimated time for repairs based on 3 private estimates, incorrect methods of repairing damage, etc), causing them to total the vehicle. So, now I have to deal with thier total loss department...yay. Their offer to me was based on sedans as this is a difficult style of vehicle to find. The problem is, sedans are a dime a dozen whereas there is quite a following for the wagon (drive one and you will understand). Needless to say, the offer is significantly lower than what it would cost to buy my car before all the upgrades were installed, so I sent them all the reciepts of items purchased withing the last 6 months equaling over $3k. Their adjustment was less than $100 to pay for my 3k worth of improvements. WTF!!! They will not negotiate or listen to any atttempt at reason and have actually said "we will not adjust the offer any higher no matter what you send us" even though I sent them several comps showing the value of the vehicle to be double their offer. Whatever you do, avoid Farmers at all cost...
On a side note, I also had called them less than 4 months ago about getting insurance for my home/cars, and they were OVER DOUBLE the cost of my previous insurance company (nationwide). I switched to Kemper to save even more and am paying just over $900 for my home (vs 2200 quote from farmers) and $714 for my cars (vs 1800 quote from farmers). I realize I am still in my 20's (28), but there is no reason for such a price difference.

I have been insured with Farmers for 13 years. Love my agent, it helps when you find one you connect with. They will walk you through claims etc. Never had a problem. I would recommend getting an agent you like and getting to know him or her so that you get personal service. They have procedures and do not look to "rip people off". Farmers is not a fly by night that may go bankrupt, it's been around forever. For complainers and crybabies who have no clue what insurance is about I guess that's what AAA and the like is automated service is created for you.
