Thieves, liars, rude, crook

I rented a car for just a day (feb 18 to feb 19th 2011) and went back to drop it off 15minutes earlier on the 19th. When I got there the girl at the counter told me their system was down so she couldnt get me a receipt but took my info and assure me that I would get my receipt on Sunday when her manager would be there but I never did get any email. The returned was only recorded on the sunday so the charged me for two days!! and they don't want to refund my money because according to them I returned the car late. I am still trying to get them to refund my money. but my advice STAY AWAY FROM DOLLAR RENTAL!!! They lie and steal. Dont be fooled by their low prices because they will steal from you anyway.
WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE EVER!!

Good at lying. Good at stealing. Actually they have NO strengths!!!

Weakness:

Rude, will believe a one person (employee) lie instead of 2 witnesses to the truth.

My sister & I went to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL in Oct 2010. I rented a car in advance on the internet. When we arrived to pick up the vehicle, I handed my sister $234+change for the rental. She handed it to reservation agent, LaToya who finished the paperwork & handed that & the change back to my sister. LaToya at NO point told us that they do not take cash! But she did wan a credit card on file in case we brought the car back damaged, etc. She told us the card would not be charged (if vehicle was brought back as it was when picked up). I rented the "exotic" & was also supposed to have an upgrade. Lo & behold-after walking 1/2 mile, we ended up with a 2009 "bare-2-the-bones" basic Jeep Liberty! No power windows, locks, mirrors, seats--nothing! Very ugly & because I am disabled, it was very difficult for me to operate the windows. We returned vehicle aI week later & was informed that the vehicle needed to be paid for! LaToya wasn't there, but they got video out of our transaction which was not a close up + it had no audio. They told us that LaToya handed ONLY the rental agreement back to us--not the change from money Id paid. My sister & I were both witnesses to what had transpired, but they would not believe us. We even pointed it out in the video where I gave the money to my sister to give to LaToya; they said I put it back in my purse. I did NOT! I had to dig lots of stuff out of that tiny fanny pack to get to my money & was putting that stuff back inside my purse. When we showed them what was happening step by step, they argued with us that #1 they never take cash & #2 all the 'hand-manuerving' was me putting the money I "offered" LaToya back INTO my purse! WRONG! They charged my sister's credit card anyway so now they got $468 for a stupid, ugly vehicle. EXOTIC?? I wonder what they definiton of exotic is? Oh, I know! That's their code for "LET'S RIP THIS CUSTOMER OFF!" So you go ahead & make up your lies & dbl charge innocent people who don't know not to pay upfront. You can be sure I'll leave a posting about your HORRIBLE service & dishonesty on many, MANY, websites.

Unethical, unsafe, insecure premise

This review is in relation to their airport car parking services but from the rental reviews, it proves that Dollar rental is a shady, unethical business.

If you value your car and/or any of your car's contents, do not park at Dollar rental airport parking.

I chose to go with Dollar Rent a Car parking because of its reputation as a national chain. In the past, I have always had good to decent experiences with Dollar rentals so on this particular day, I thought, "Why not give their airport parking at Laguardia a try?"

Dropping off the car and catching the shuttle went off without a hitch. The problem was when we returned to find that a blue tooth headset plus cable spliter in our car was missing. Clearly, someone had snatched it because they disconnected and left a few other useless cords. In addition, we noted that our car had minor scratches that were previously not there. Apparently, Dollar rental either hires untrustworthy employees or their premises is unsafe and insecure.

Finally, I have attempted to contact the city manager and left several messages. One week later, noone has returned my calls. So much for customer service.

Now, one can argue that the total value of items stolen was insignificant in the grand scheme of things (approximately $100) but this is still unacceptable and disturbing. We left the airport parking garage not only minus a bluetooth headset but also our faith and trust in Dollar rental as a company.

Everything

My brother, who is in the military was coming home for 2 weeks and due to the time his flight was coming in, noone was available to pick him up when his flight arrived. He was flying in to Albany International in Albany, NY and had made arrangements to rent a car with Dollar Rent a Car. I spoke with the company on the morning that he was supposed to arrive, because the rental company was not in the actual airport, and I wanted to find out if they had a shuttle service to pick my brother up from the airport so that he could get his rental car. I was told yes, that he would just have to call when he arrived. His flight was delayed 2 1/2 hours, and when he arrived he called me in a panic telling me that he had called Dollar and was told that since his flight was delayed, they dropped his reservation and gave away his rental car.
I then called the Dollar rental company to see what could be done to get my brother a car to get home, with him being almost 2 hours away from home and had been traveling all day. I was told by the agent on the phone that they only hold the reservations for 2 hours and after that time they gave the car away. He said that my brother should have notified them that his flight was delayed, to which my response was, "how was he supposed to know that you would not hold his car, and how is he expected to call when he is in flight?". He responded by telling me that the FAA doesn't allow planes to just fly around in the air for 2 1/2 hours, they would get fined for that. I asked again if there was anything he could do and he told me that he had no other cars available to rent out. I then asked him if that was how this company does business? You just give away reserved cars and offer no help to people when they are stranded?? He told me that that is how every car rental company in the US does business, they won't hold reservations for over 2 hours. I then asked to speak to a manager to try to get somewhere. He told me that he was the manager, so I then asked him for his name. He told me his name, Scott Havens, and then replied do you want me to spell it out for you or can you manage it on your own? I told him, no problem I've got it. He then said "good, call corporate with it! F**c You, and hung up on me.

So I decided to take his advise and after a little good old internet research and a couple of calls, finding out that Thrifty and Dollar are actually managed by the same company, I got in touch with the corporate office in Oklahoma. Just in case anyone needs it, it's 918-669-3930, then pick any number and someone will get you to the right person. The person I actually talked to was the Customer Service Liason to the CEO of the company who advised me to have my brother rent a car from another company and to fax her a copy of the bill personally and she would make sure a check was sent for the difference he would have to pay. We'll see how far this gets as it just happened yesterday 8/9/10.

During the process of renting a car at this location this past weekend, I handed my license and insurance card to the booking agent. She took my license but returned my State Farm insurance card and advised me Dollar does not accept personal insurance. She then went on to say I had to pick from the two insurance coverages they offered ($26.99 - basic or $36.99 - full / per day). I choose the $26.99, finalized the contract and left with my vehicle. On Monday I looked at the paperwork to see by what time I had to return the vehicle and I noticed there was a charge listed as "estimated optional coverages". I called the corporate office and was advised this charge was for the optional insurance I chose. I explained to the representative that I was told I had to get the coverage and told them my story. I was then advised to speak to the manager upon the return of the vehicle. Later that day when I arrived to return the vehicle, I spoke to the manager who told me I chose the insurance, initialed the contract and there was nothing that could be done. Perhaps if I would have come in the next day after having rented the vehicle something could be credited but seeing as I chose to come in the day my rental ended, there was nothing that could be done. Even after explaining once again how the desk representative did not give me a choice because I either had to take the insurance or leave because according to her "Dollar does not accept personal insurance" he still said it was my fault and that I should have brought the insurance issue up earlier. How can an issue be brought up if I wasn't aware there was an issue until I questioned a charge and called the corporate office? Having accomplished nothing after speaking with the manager, I called and filed a complaint with the corporate office so the insurance charge was refunded and my complaint was sent to the general manager. I also followed up with my own complaint letter to the corporate office, general manager as well as to the Better Business Bureau.

I will not rent at this location ever again and I strongly suggest people heed my warning because this location misleads the consumer and the worst part is the incompetent manager condones this behavior.

Strength:

Dollar Rental is strong in unethical business practice!

Weakness:

Willing to allow the public to drive off in unroadworthy vehicles (4 out of 5 had bald - smooth!!! - front tires).

Worst experience ever in car rental. Refused two cars due to body damage and bald tires; took 3rd car but it turned out to have a dragging throttle. Two near crashes later pulled in to Toyota service who confirmed car was not roadworthy. Requested replacement car which all took 5hrs to resolve. Rude staff did not record any of the faults, tried to trick me into signing for damage we never did cause. The replacement vehicle was of a lower rental class but we were not given any credit for that either. To add insult, they later ran unauthorized cc charge for a non-existant additional driver and topping up the tank of the faulty car and the replacement car prior to hand-over.

DOLLAR RENT A CAR charged me $1093 for a two hour rental. Don't believe it, keep reading. As I write this I have been fighting the charge for 7 months.

My friends and I rented 2 cars from DOLLAR in Panama, February 2008 (a van and additional car -- the Dollar van was big enough for our party but not our luggage so we rented the additional car for the day). We had an arrangment with the Dollar rental agent that for $25 a Dollar employee would come and pick up the car. All we had to do was leave the keys at the front desk upon arrival and someone would be up later that day. We drove to our hotel and left the keys at the front desk.
(we stayed in the hotel for 3 days; we rented another car from Dollar to again help transport our luggage to the second hotel; only staying in Panama for 1 week)
Now imagine this: 2 weeks after returning to the U.S. I see a charge from Dollar for $1093. No one ever came to pick up the car (per our agreement) and it took them 3 weeks to figure out what happened to their car.
You may be thinking, "wow, that's too bad, but why didn't you just call." Imagine if the person responsible for picking up the car was given the $25 (fee for getting car picked up) directly. Do you think that car would have sat there? No they would have remembered their contract with us and picked up the car.

The car worked but felt like it was about to shake apart

Weakness:

Customer service is non-existant

I reserved a Kia Rio (or similar) economy car, online, with Dollar Rent A Car, to be picked up Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 at Tucson International Airport and to be dropped off Sunday September 21 at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. On the 15th we arrived at the Dollar Rent A Car counter at the designated time to pick up our car. We were told that there were no cars available but that they had an arrangement with Alamo to rent us a car and that if there were any discrepancies in the rental price, we would be reimbursed. The gentleman who helped us was very apologetic and helpful. I was a little disappointed as I had made my reservations on June 18th and now I was being told they did not have a car for me. However, it seemed that the employee had taken care of any problems, was nice, and so we went on to Alamo to get our car. After waiting in line for 30 minutes at Alamo, we were informed that the only vehicle that we could take to Phoenix was an SUV and would cost at least $600, almost $400 more than we had planned on paying. My husband and I knew that we could not afford this difference even though Dollar had promised they would pay the difference, we decided to check with them.

We called Dollar from the Alamo counter and explained the situation. The person I spoke to told me to ‘wait a minute’ and began talking to someone in the background. While I was waiting for a response, the Alamo representative began talking to me as I explained my frustration with the situation. She made an innocent comment stating that Alamo did not have a policy of overbooking. I replied that I think that would be a good lesson for Dollar. Immediately, the Dollar representative began yelling at me on the phone stating that he did not appreciated my attitude and that it was uncalled for. I asked if he even knew what I was responding to. He said no. I then told him that based on the situation that DOLLAR had put me in I was being more than cooperative and understanding. I had not raised my voice, I had not cussed, I had not complained a SINGLE time. He continued to berate me at which point I became upset and let my husband deal with the problem. He hung up the phone and went back to the Dollar counter where the same representative, whom we later found to be named David Rodabaugh, continued to be uncooperative and kept insisting that he was just trying to help us. (Of course reneging on an agreement and reducing a woman to tears is my idea of helpful! What was I thinking?!) My husband replied that we appreciated that but the only way to help us was to get us a car. He even tried to tell my husband that just because we had a reservation, it did not guarantee that we would have a car. I think he should be shown a dictionary as the definition, by Webster’s, of reservation includes an arrangement to have something (as a hotel room) held for one's use ; also : a promise, guarantee, or record of such engagement. By the very definition, a reservation is a promise or guarantee!! My husband finally had to become firm with Mr. Rodabaugh and miraculously, a car was found for us. I truly believe, that had my husband not intervened, Mr. Rodabaugh would have continued to be disrespectful and bully-ish to me and I would have been left high and dry. As soon as a man entered the situation he became accommodating and helpful.

I feel that I was disrespected as a customer and a person. The simple fact that we had a contract for services to be rendered, that initially the company was not going to honor, is enough for me never to use Dollar Rent A Car again (much less recommend it to others). Combine this with the horrendous attitude and customer service given by Mr. Rodabaugh, and the situation is even worse. I cannot see how this company will continue to survive when there are so many other choices out there. I suggest a change in policy and better employee training. My experience was (negatively) unforgettable.
