Strength:

When you rent cars from Hertz and they are new (from 0 to 6000 km) they mught be alright...but after that they are not good. You may run in trouble since the Hertz fleet is very poorly maintained.

Weakness:

price is very high
they have hidden fees other companies don't have. such as parking recovery fee.
very poor fleet. very poor response in case of emergency.
very expensive insurance
the agents are trained by the company to NOT explain the brackedown of charges so that the clients won't know that the agent added products not explain or about fees such as the parking rec fee.

Hertz is overbooking most of the times so the have a high rate of usage per fleet. Anytime you book with Hertz you may have a surprise "We don't have a car" and the common ever lie "we expected returns but clients are late or extended their rentals". You should remember this is a lie. They say the overbook with 20% more then they have available to cover for them for no-shows (bookings that clients have but don't show up to rent). In reality they are sometimes overbooked with 80% such as Christams vacations. It means that 80% of the people traveling for Xmas risk to be blocked somewhere because Hertz won't have a car for them even though they have one booked well in advance. Pur & simple . Hertz managers don't care about it. You can even complain about it, they still won't care. They will give you a credit certificate for your next rentals with Hertz. So if you are not happy with them...you only have to go back to Hertz to make usage of that certificate. It is a bad joke!
The best part is that I know all this insides because I worked for Hertz as a front line agent in Montreal.
I could kkep on explaning you so many more reasons not to ever rent from this company which is only focused on stealing money from clients.
It was an embarasing job...to know that I am practicaly trained to steal.
I have worked for other major rental company before for many years but it was not even close to what it happens to Hertz.

Please do not rent with Hertz, unless you are willing to pay DOUBLE the original rental amount when returning the car to a different location.
Will NEVER rent from them again!

Customer service and fleet itself

I travel for business and my company has a corporate account with Egencia.com, a booking site. I arrived on a very slow day. Agent was nice. I booked a midsize car. I was given a bright red Nissan Matrix with a 3 foot major scratch in the sidepanel and a 5 foot crack in the driver side panel. The passenger side panel scratch had stickers on it like a UHAUL would if they were aware of damage. The 5' scratch did not. Nothing was ever spoken of the damage, let alone the UNPROFESSIONAL image I would have presented arriving to my government clients in a neon red clown car with dents in it. I went back to trade the car, but the guy was nowhere to be found. No one was at the counter. After 10 minutes, someone arrived, who did not know how to return a refused car. The guy that helped me was on break. I said, "Break? From what? I'm the only one here." This is a very small airport. I said, "call him." But no one knew his number. SERIOUSLY? The guy probably has his head buried in an I-Phone during his shift everyday, and no one knows his phone number? Secondly, where could this guy be? It is a small airport. After waiting for another 20 minutes, I went to Enterprise at the next counter and switched my reservation. They were AWESOME. They do not care at Hertz. They rely on corporate accounts and do not care about customer service or price. The corporate accounts are overpriced, but they have been negotiated prior to the rental, so there is no real incentive for even mediocre customer service. TERRIBLE!!!!

Poor customer service, cost way more than expected, car not as promised.

Clerk at Hertz in Atlanta's Hartfield airport lied to me about many things resulting in my being overcharged by $300 and not getting the car I was promised. The corporate office backed the clerk 100%, no help in resolving the issue as far as I was concerned. I will never rent from Hertz again.

Poor, unreliable service

Hertz in Amman consistently loses reservations (even with confirmation numbers) and does not have cars available at the stated time. We have once been sent all over town to different locations and on another occasion been asked to wait 3 hours for an available car.

Lots of locations, some are even staffed.

Poor, unresponsive service

Got a brand new so-called full sized car in Ireland (where the Toyota Camry's are full sized) with 7 kms on it. After filling tank on the other side of the country with 700 kms on the odometer the car died electrically. When I phoned Hertz on their 1-800 number they said the car was "out of petrol", and when I assured her this wasn't the case the claim was "you left the lights on", also of course not true since it was daytime and I had only stopped for 5 minutes. After that they said "call Toyota on their 800 number" and hung up. When I called them the attitude was about the same, blamed me. I got a local auto electric guy to help me trouble shoot the car and found a bunch of loose connections, finally finding the one causing the problem and carried on. I have no idea what a less resourceful or capable person would have done since neither company gave a damn about the car quitting.

All the other rental car companies for many years. Never before had one quit on me so had no need of "service" beyond making sure the car was available and most of my experience have been ok other than Sixt (Budget Germany) ripping me off for $700 for a minor rub mark on the corner of a plastic front bumper. My Visa company took care of that charge under their "insurance".

Completely screwed by Hertz. I had a free voucher from a rebate credit card for a mid size car rental for a week. It was a toyota corrola! To upgrade to a bottom of the line minivan was another 450.00. Never use them again.

We had booked a car from Hertz to be picked up in Santa Barbara (late January 2010). Huge mistake. To reconfirm our reservation (I had already received a printed confirmation and a subsequent email repeating the particulars), I tried calling their location earlier that day. No answer. I also got the Hertz desk at LA Union Station to call them. No answer. And when we got to Santa Barbara Amtrak station which was the Hertz "location", no car and no desk, just a yellow Hertz telephone. By this, I was connected to their central booking line who suggested I "might" get a car the next day (although we needed it immediately). I insisted that they had a responsibility to fix this, so after some time, they agreed that I could go out to the airport and that office "would honor" our booking. Being a $50 cab ride away, they agreed to reimburse me $25. The problem is that Hertz has many small (one person) desks who may or may not be there and apparently take a very casual approach to their bookings. My complaints afterward resulted in their promise to send me some gift certificates, which never arrived. Typical.

My Gold Club membership (started the year that club started) evaporated. I was told I was an Express customer, that I'd never been a Gold member (I guess all those years of my name on the Hertz marquee were hallucinations) and that, by claiming something was changed, I was lying. Customer service didn't care, and couldn't be bothered. I will never use this company again.

They have locations everywhere.

It was pretty good deal. I rented a car from Hertz they gave me an upgrade without charging me for it.
