Model Reviewed: MSD 6-Offroad PN 6470

Strength:

Price, Ease of intallation, Did what it promised.

Weakness:

The instructions/manuals don't say anything against running your stock coil. and it should because it didn't work as good w/ my stock gm coil.

Intallation was a breeze. MSD included all of the parts needed for installation. Instructions were simple. The product did exactly what it said it would do. I have a cam and could never get the idle to calm down, with the MSD box installed the truck now idles perfect. I no longer have to constantly adjust my carb. The throttle is more reponsive. The power gain wasn't anything outrageous but it's deffenitly there, I have a 1975 Chev Small Block 400 w/ a 4bolt main and a mild cam and aftermarket heads stock intake and Edelbrock AVS Thunder offroad which is an awsome product as well. I am runnign my stock gm hei distributer w/ the upgraded msd coil. Very happy with the product...

Strength:

I really like the rev. limiter feature but will not buy it again because of the poor reliability

Weakness:

Reliability

Car only has 1400 miles on it. MSD 6AL box sputtered at 3000 to 5500 rpm. Then car backfired when letting off gas and then died totally. Had to trailer home. Very little time on box and it is already dead.

Everything, if you wnt to be left stranded in the middle of the road this is the product for you

HORRIBLE PRODUCT! DO NOT BUY! My 2000 Honda accord barely starts in morning, didnt see any diffrence in throttle response and the worst was the other day as i was leaving from work, i was doing about 60 and my car just died, I had no throttle, left me stranded in the middle of the road for about 20 minutes, when after cranking the car about 100 times it finally barely started and I was able to basically crawl over to my house.

Strength:

better acceleration, higher rev, gas is sensitive

Weakness:

it fried in my frends box-like 240sx, so they had to remove it.

actually my frend who is a mechanic installed it in his Integra and in his friends box-like 240sx the integra was automatic but there was really a difference starting it was easier and faster, acceleration was increased, rpm reached 7500. when he installed it in his frends stadard 240sx that thing would give u a headache cuz the throttle response and sensitivity was so high, every time u speed shift ur head wud fly back this is one cool upgrade for a car. Too bad you cant install it on new cars with coils.

Strength:

real fun to drive, hoping to pass smog with lower emissions.

Weakness:

need better brakes, strange smell from engine and exhaust after one day, hoping it will go away and mabey its just the smell of everything breaking in. Mounting was the most time consuming.

yeeeh haw. MSD improved response, sound, and hp, my truck will chirp in second now. Nice compliment to cold intake, freeflow exhaust, chip, throttle body spacer. Truck is a new animal. Get the wireing harness and some coregeted wire cover. Hesitation did occur only because i knocked a sensor out/vaccume line, replaced with no troubles. An easy upgrade thats well worth a days work.

Strength:

Improved acceleration, better starting, less misfire at higher rpms.

Weakness:

reliability

I installed this system at the beginning of my 2005 racing season and the thing has been flawless except for the coil wire falling off during a qualifying session(crew chief oversight)however, during my 2006 season, the car came off the track just fine and I started working on the car and now it won't start. I have no spark and I'm not sure what happened. Any ideas???

Received a MSD distributor ready to run #8360 for Christmas. When I installed it, engine would not idle and quit running. Changed vacumn advance springs, but did not help. Called MSD techline 2 times in 1 day (long distance) suggested things I had already tried. I have installed distributors in many vehicles, haved done mechanic work for years, still could not get car to idlle enough to set time. Reinstalled old distributor which was very worn and engine ran fine. I was told by one of the online techs that he did not know what the problem could be when I told him I unplugged vacumn advance line and car engine would completely die. Finally I called JEGS where it was ordered from, explained the problem and was instructed to return the distributor due to product defect.

Model Reviewed: MSD-6AL, Billet Distributor, HVC Blaster Coil, 8.5 mm wires

Strength:

MUCH improved starting, hot and cold. Eliminated rich condition at full throttle. Smoother, stronger pull from idle to redline. Smoother operation at highway speeds. Looks great. Makes people say, "Ooh! MSD in a Bug!" :)

Weakness:

None so far. Since I installed an entire new igniton system, I can't vouch for the effectiveness of any one part. Might not make such an improvement on a vehicle with a modern, high-powered igntion from the factory. Be wary of installation. Couldn't be simpler in an old Bug but the instructions weren't great for all you with more complicated cars.

All at once, I installed a 6AL unit, an MSD distributor, an HVC Blaster coil, and MSD plug wires on my modified '67 Beetle. Compared to the ancient technology of the 009 Bosch distributor and Blue Coil, the MSD produced incredible economy and performance gains. Engine starts easier, pulls harder throughout the RPM range, and no longer smokes at full throttle. Milage was increased noticeably. If you drive an older car, especially one with points ignition, I'd recommend MSD products for an upgrade. MSD cured every problem my engine had except for the worn out crank bearings. :)

Driveability, performance and the enviorment all are winners with this product.

Weakness:

have to clean the inner distributor cap posts yearly, and rotors need to be cleaned as well.

Awsome product. Better starts, faster take offs, and cleaner burns. Hot or cold, dry or damp, high octain or low, one turn of the key she starts. Off of the line she jumps. Emmissions inspections , well its like I am not even there. My 78 Ford is more enviormentally friendly than my friends new low emmissions Honda. MSD corp. has proven to me that the engineers should be put in charge and not the politicians.

Much improved starting and idle on older vehicles especially.Better mileage in some cases.Better plug and point life.Fires high cylinder pressure[N2O,turbo,supercharged and high compresion]much more reliably.

Weakness:

Relativly lg box, hard to find mounting spot in newer cars. Not a plug and play app.Make sure of your connections. Also, the better your factory ignition and the closer to stock, the less difffernce you will notice.

I have used msd 6a/al units on many vehicles over the last 20 years and have been very satisfied. My first unit is now 20 years old and in its third car.Ihave also bought 4 units at swap meets at resonable prices:only one had problems but was repaired at a very nominal fee.Other than that used unit, any problems Ive ever had with them ultimatly proved to be in the wiring connections.
