AEM Cold Air Intake Intakes/Filters

AEM Cold Air Intake Intakes/Filters

DESCRIPTION

The new AEM Cold Air Induction system generates more horsepower and torque than all other air intake devices.

A cold air intake system relocates the filter outside of the engine compartment to deliver cool air inlet temperatures. Cooler air carries more oxygen, which translates into a more intense explosion in the combustion chamber to create more horsepower and torque. But that's only part of the power equation. Tuning the inlet pipe in length and diameter to match the engine's resonance helps move more air to the cylinders (think of your engine as a big air pump), and this tuning allows us to deliver large power gains. We also monitor fuel trim correction factors and all OBDII sensors during product development to eliminate leaning the engine out and/or throwing a check engine light.

Strength:

-Fairly cheap if you shop around.
-Better looking and lighter than stock.
maybe 5-8 hp (it's noticable).
-increase gas mileage

Weakness:

-not as quiet as stock (could be a plus for some)
-Brings up possibility of hydrolock, but unlikely.
-a super novice may have difficulty installing, but it's not impossible.

When i bought my civic used from a private owner i had a suspision that there was something up with the assembly; instead of spending an arm and leg to replace it i bought the AEM CAI. Instructions are easy to follow and it took less than 1 hr to intall; the hardest part was putting my splash-shield back in. The difference in performance was night and day in my car. My civic used to feel extremely boggy, especially when trying to accelerate in 2nd from a near stop or slow roll, now the car is much more responsive and i notice a torque improvment in low rpm (maybe cuz my old intake was messed up). I can really feel the incresed HP from about 3700 through the VTEC, not to mention the throaty tone of the engine as you increase rpm. My mileage improved from 28 to 31 mpg combined city/highway, which basically told me my old intake was jacked. I'm guessing the average person increases thier mileage by 1-2 mpg.

Strength:

Really well designed, beautiful gun metal finish and new dry foam filter that seams to work really well and is easily cleaned.

Weakness:

May be a problem for people who have to drive through ponds or rivers. Removing filter involves taking off a couple of fender liner clips and one screw and pulling the bottom of the liner out of the way and using a nut driver to remove the hose clamp on the filter.

This is one of the last performance mods I installed on my car. I originally could not justify the price of these. Originally I had one of those cheap cold air intakes that I got off ebay that made a decent power gain, but it was obnoxiously loud at anything above idle and made a weird whine at idle and a popping sound when you shut the engine off. Then I modified the stock air box by cutting a bigger hole in the bottom and mounting a pvc pipe elbow in the fender and putting a K&N drop in filter, not much of gain in power. I took the plunge and bought the V2, really easy install if your stock resonator is removed, one hole to drill and the only pain is putting the filter on the end of the tube, need the car jacked up or really small hands and a short nut driver for the hose clamp on the filter and get some new plastic fasteners for the fender liner the old ones break really easily. The intake really lives up to all the hype that is made about it. The intake is quiet at idle and cruising around at normal speeds and screams when you reach upper rpms. The power gains seem to be good everywhere, down low and the upper rpms. I was always paranoid about submerging the filter in deep water and hydrolocking the engine, but after all the rain I drove through this summer, I see no need to worry. AEM really has a winner with this intake and I highly recommend it.

Great sound at high RPMs sounds more like a V6 than a 4 cylinder! I also drasticaly inproved my gas mileage, I was averaging about 25mpg and after the install it soared to an average of 32mpg!!! I also loved that they came in different colors; black, red, silver, chrome, and blue...I got blue because it's exactly the same color of my car...Perfect Match!!!

Weakness:

Nothing at all!!!

I purchased the intake on ebay for $185 but the rest of it was shipping. It was the cheapest place i'd found it. It also came with a K&N dry filter, which when it needs a cleaning all I do is take it off and hose it down and let it dry, and best of all it never has to be replaced...K&N million mile warranty!!!

Strength:

Not too loud, but not too quiet. Good addition to a muffler. Can be found cheap on certain sites.

Weakness:

Install sucked on my 99 civic ex. Had to pay a performance shop like 40 bucks because they had to remove part of my fender and move some minor components around to fit the intake in its area.

Works awesome. Sounds clean in the higher RPMs and is pretty much unnoticeable at idle. I had a BUSTED stock intake, so this helped my car run a LOT smoother. Better than short ram..doesn't heat up like my short ram did. The short ram I had was off ebay so who knows?

Sound, you virtually feel some performance gain.

Weakness:

Install is not a peace of cake, but not anything impossible either.

Well, there are cheaper alternatives, but looks like with AEM you cannot go wrong.
Install manual is very detailed.

Model Reviewed: AEM Cold Air Intake for Dodge Neon R/T 2003

Strength:

High performance on the high end of the gears, even in 4th, 5th.

Weakness:

sounds a little better than stock on the low end, but the power is about the same.

Day 1: Installing the AEM Cold Air intake was easy on my R/T until it came to the part where I had to take off the fender lining. Than things got a little tricky, but that was at the end. Right off the bat I noticed the increse in HP. The only gripe I have is that the major difference in HP is on high RPMs. I'd say I notice the difference starting around 4000 RPMs nice and than when I get up to 5000 it's a nice roar and the car just bolts. At 6 I have to shift before redlining, but a 6 it usualy goes back down to 4 on the next gear anyway, so it does indeed work. I just don't like it on the low end. Feels the same. Right now is still day one yet, so I haven't figured it out right perfect. You know shifing wise and at which RPMs. I'll have to say I've gained at least 20-30 HP on the high end, or at least it feels thus. On the low end it doesn't lag, but feels about the same stock. Well it's still day 1, so in a week or two I'll give you an update before I move on to the next mod. Thanks.

Nice pull in the mid-upper RPM range. Sounds mean as hell at WOT. The finish of the intake is perfect. Great look no matter what you do.

Weakness:

Loss of power in the 1-3k RPM range. Did not expect that.

I bought this intake for my project and got a nice gain in the upper RPM range (this car's an automatic). The box came with everything you would need for the install. Filter, clamps, hoses and of course decals to make your car go faster. ;) WARNING: If you live in an area that's prone to flooding or have the car lowered more than 1.5 inches, buy the By-Pass Valve. Worth the insurance investment. Nobody wants Hydro lock.

Strength:

Bottom end loss is extremely minimal if noticeable at all. Mid to high power increases come in pulses until 5200k+ where it peaks till redline... Essential part for the civic DX; the sound is AWESOME, but not too loud, and is worth every penny for the perf difference

Weakness:

Can suck in water in HUGE puddles without the bypass valve. Thats all. 50 state legal, blah blah... power coated... I have never once hated it

Best initial upgrade for the civic dx, hands down. GREAT power increases

Strength:

Cold air, nice 4.5krpm hp spike, carb certified, easy install

Weakness:

loss of power at low end rpm, louder than stock

This was my first performance mod to my D16Y8 engine. I chose this CAI because tprmag and other dyno charts showed that in addition to the 2-5 hp increase at the top end, this also produced a 4-6 hp jump in the 4.5k to 5k rpm range... very useful for the midrange street usage. The person I bought it used from no longer had the AEM filter so I bought a K&N 6" cone filter which fit just fine. I think I lost a little power in the 2k rpm range, but get more back at the 3.5k-5k rpm range. Reality is, < 10hp is hardly noticeable. It is louder than stock, but not as loud as a short ram intake. It roars at high 5k+ rpm. Easy to install; the hard part being removing the stock intake. My OBD2 scan gauge shows that intake temperatures stay close to outside ambient as it should with a CAI.
