Model Reviewed: 1994 Ford Explorer

Strength:

Great off road traction, durable, quiet highway ride, great treadwear, inexpensive compared to other replacement alternatives.

Weakness:

Tread "squirm" on the LT version when new, black borders around the raised white letters is deteriorating slightly, making the letters look somewhat odd.

In January 2000 I replaced a set of Firestone Radial ATX tires on a 1994 Explorer with the light truck 6 ply version of the Discoverer AT. They now have about 18,000 miles on them and I'm very happy with the performance. The LT version has a deeper tread than the passenger version, so there was a little "squirm" in the vehicle's handling at first, but it was unnoticeable after about 1,000 miles. I use the vehicle on some serious four wheel drive roads, and have always had great traction, wet or dry, and no punctures or sidewall problems. They are wearing great, and they are very quiet on the highway. I've like them so much, I've replaced OEM tires on our two work vehicles with these tires (1999 Ford F-150 and 2000 Ford Explorer).
